WHat are new RFID locks?

OK, so I am the one idiot that does know know what these are...I am sorry...Could someone tell me the difference in these new door locks and the ones we are used to at POP and CBR where you slide your cards in the door and it lights up green?

Basically, instead of sliding the card into the slot, you just touch the card to the door handle instead.

It's basically a grey box.. nothing really notable.. except where you would expect a deadbolt to be, there is a small raised box you tap the card to.
