"Glow with the Show" Ideas for WDW

You've seen them. They're cool. I think it's a question of when they come to WDW, not if. What kind of effects would like to see at WDW?

-Since there's no night parade at Disneyland or DCA, we won't see this until WDW at the earliest: I think these would be really great with a night parade. Each float would have its own effect. Imagine watching the parade from the train station and watching the streaks of color follow the parade floats down MSUSA. It would make the crowd part of the show.

-Laugh Floor. When there's laughing or screaming and the lights react like they do now, it would be really neat if the ear hats "played along". Something like that would actually enhance the story of the show. Since you're in a show, I don't think it would be a distraction at all. It would be different if you were in a dark ride and saw somebody else's ride vehicle lighting up.

Your thoughts?

Illuminations would be neat during the Chaos sequence and the grand finale
Spectro if it came back with each float it would interact...
Fantasmic! No doubt for any effect
Magic Memories and you Plus Wishes

I agree... the only question is when. As mentioned already, the nighttime parades, fireworks and entertainment will all be plussed with the addition of the glow ears. I also think you'll see them adding effects to some of the attractions. I bet one of the first will be the new Dumbos and tie the ears to the new LEDs around the base. Looking forward to this "NextGen" project hitting the parks at WDW!

I'd like to see them glow with SpectroMagic... maybe they'd glow white when everything turned white, and then flash colors when everything became colorful again.

Synchronizing to the castle color changes and pyro effects during Wishes.....
I actually think it might be kind of cool if they did synchronized them even after Wishes was over, as the castle changes during the night, so do you're ears. It'd be cool to see it on the paths and queues. If only they were long-range, it'd be awesome to be getting ready for bed and see your ears change a few times to reflect the castle being put to sleep.

That...would be fantastic.

I can't wait to see these at WDW. I think Illuminations is the obvious choice for a first show to get this working for, as EPCOT is in sore need of attention. I hope that's where Disney Parks looks to next after Fantasyland.

I think Fantasmic would be really cool, because of the seating constraints. If they are very popular, it'd be a built-in effect that they could maybe work into the show. Maybe more than just synced with the explosions or highlights, they could use the audience members as props. Like flashlights during dark/silent times.
Also, I'm not sure about the technology, but would there be a way to set-up the seating areas with limiters, so you could light up parts of the crowd individually? For example, split it into thirds, creating an almost strobe like option to add to the show.

I've only seen the Fantasmic show once (though I'll see it again this year)...

I really think the venue at Illuminations cries out for this sort of tech. People wrapped around the lake, as well as all the congestion near the frontal view, I think they could really turn this into something very fun and amazing.

I dunno about the $25 dollar charge. I'd almost rather see them uprate the tickets by $25 and then hand them out for free, if it's gonna be part of the show.

Based on some videos and some discussion in the Disneyland forum...maybe. Just because I can't figure out how to do it doesn't mean the Imagineers can't, though. They can definitely make random subsets of hats act differently.

While I won't go so far as to agree, it is an unfortunate situation. If you go on youtube right now, most of the videos will probably be from a media preview where they were handed out for free to everyone. It looks amazing, but you'll never see so many people wearing them in one place again. You'll just get a taste out in the "real world".

I think I read that they gave them out for free to AP holders who went to a special late night event there (i.e. the showing of WOC where they taped the promotional stuff)

When it comes to WDW, they could certainly do it the same way giving them out to AP holders as part of a promotion. I wonder if they would make a similar offer to DVD members or at least have discounted ones for AP/DVC folks -- since those people would be more likely to be frequent guests, you'd have a greater show impact from them buying the ears.

I know that this will never happen, but I wish they would hand the hats out before the show, and then have everyone return them afterwards. Kinda like what Disney does with the 3D glasses.

Yep, the hats are able to do that and more. Here's an article by the OCRegister which has additional details:

"The hats are very smart," Davison said. "We can do many different things, like patterns," he said. "We can make one section pink, another green, or make it eclectic. It sounds simple, but the microchip of the hat is amazing and complex."

For example, the hats can look like a star field for WALL-E and Eve, or an ocean of blue for Ariel the mermaid, he said. Davison has wanted the interactive hats to be part of parades and firework shows as far back as 10 years ago. "I kept on trying to find a way to do it, but the technology wasn't there yet," he said.

Very cool! If they come to the parks that might finally persuade me to buy a pair of mickey ears (I know...I've never owned a pair. The shame ;) ). It'd be amazing if they could encorporate them into all the different night time shows. I especially like the idea of using them with spectromagic and then and the castle show and wishes. That would be amazing if they could do it for all 3 of those...would just be that much more immersive. And seeing many Mickey ears lighting up around the Epcot lagoon would also be very nice.

I do echo the one statement that I wish they could hand them out and then have people turn them back in so it would look as effective as it did in the video in the OP. They more there are the more effective the effect. But I sadly think that's asking way too much for everyone to use the honor system for turning them back in (I dont habe a lot of faith in some of my fellow humans :( )and would just be so hard to police for people stealing them.

There's just no way to enforce the "honor system" of handing them out.

If the ears are part of the show, I doubt many will fork out 25 bucks for them (I could be wrong)...and if participation is spotty, the effect is lost.

I forecast a lot of park guests not getting them, but seeing them during the show and thinking "wow, I wish I had gotten one of those"...and then it leaves their mind after they exit the park.

If they don't hike the ticket prices to pay for them, perhaps giving them out to special guests (AP holders, resort stayers, etc) would work? I wouldn't notice a $25 hike in my resort stay, and it's a neat perk.
