The Black Tarp On Big Thunder Mountain?

I remember reading an article on micechat's "declining by degrees" months ago about a big black tarp on one of the rock facade's in btm. Took a trip last weekend, and was shocked to notice it still there. Any idea why Disney would need a black tarp covering up the rocks like that for so long now?

From what I've seen posted online, one of the shaking rocks fell off onto the track. The tarp is covering the hole where it was.

Yeah that black tarp has been there for quite a while now. I feel like I've seen it for about a year now . . . maybe longer.

Great now we can start a "Remove the Black Tarp" thread and discuss how much we hate the black tarp and it need to removed like the wand. :ROFLOL:

This is pretty unacceptable. At least put a non-moving rock there.

And while we're at it, having 2/3rd of the animatronics not working next door in Splash Mountain is unacceptable, too.

There's been several already. On the scale of annoyances, it's somewhere around ...

1. Ruining Journey Into Imagination
2. Yeti broke for years
3. Stich everywhere
4. No Beastly Kingdom
5. Under New Management
6. Turning Main Street into a department store
7. Black tarp at Big Thunder Mountain
8. Busby Berkley effects broken for years
9. The scents broken at Universe of Energy

The above list is fine and all....but of the list, I would immediately not care about 1, 3, 5 (which isn't really an issue anymore), & 6. These items are by design and you can claim you hate them, and that's fine....I hate some of them too.

But the real problem is 'broken show' .... The Yeti is not what was imagineered, the Tarp is not what was imagineered, animatronics not running in rides is not what was imagineered.

The severe frustration I feel with things like the tarp on BTM is that it is a VERY serious indicator that TDO has zero intention of fixing stuff. Throw a tarp over it and hope no one notices. Disgusting. Had I been to WDW since the revelation of this tarp, I would write a very nasty letter to guest relations....but I'm not going to until I'm there in october (assuming it's not fixed then) as I feel my letter would carry more weight indicating that I just was there and just saw it with my own eyes.

However, It boggles my mind that there isn't a massive letter campaign with the intent to flood guest relations with complaints re: the tarp and the yeti.

Has there been a coordinated effort to such a thing here? If not, it might be time....

There are some things that need more time to fix, but good lord, this should be a very simple maintenance issue. What are we talking, a day of down time to fix this thing?

It is my assumption, that the majority of monies projected in their Fiscal Year budgets over the last 3-5 years, (just guessing) has gone to FLE so all these maintenence issues are being put on the back burner. Its quite a shame that things have fallen to such neglect. I wish too that Disney would take care of these issues instead of jumping from new project to new project one example seemed to be the new HM Interactive queue. The new Star Tours was desperately needed though.

If i remember correctly things that have been stated here, the operations maintenance budget has nothing to do with new projects budgets. That would be a horrible way to run business anyway. There's no reason that FLE would cause Thunder to go unrepaired...it's not even the same groups of workers that would work on those projects at this time.

While I do find a lot of complaints here to be a little over the top, this is one that I fully agree with. There is no excuse for such poor show for such an extended period of time. Even if they couldn't fix the situation at least put some sort of face rock scrim over the area like they do with building facades. This would be like them replacing the yeti with a cardboard cutout.

Walt would never accept it... sorry had to be said. However, I do agree that there are some things that are poor show. This from a company who is so worried about guest perception that they would put up construction walls just to install a new garbage can.

While Walt probably wouldn't have been happy about it (as any executive should) we cannot say that some problems like this didn't exist when Walt was running Disneyland. Photos from that time obviously only captured the best of what was there and without the instant gratification of the internet people weren't able to comment on things like this as we are. While Walt probably expected great showmanship I would venture to guess that there was occasionally chipped paint and a broken effect on his attractions just as there are today.

So what are you saying? lets just not talk about it, and let this issue remain an issue for as long as it possibly can? Do you like the tarp there?

Your right, lets just accept that tdo half a**es maintenance issues. Lets forget that this is the number 1 visited park in the whole world, and they have no excuse for letting something like this take so long. This is something that needs to be fixed, its not like a broken yeti, or a big wand on spaceship earth, this is a minor maintenance issue that could be fixed even with a rock scrim. An issue like this should not be taking so long to fix. We cant let tdo become even more complacent then they already are, if disney fans dont bring it to anyones attention who will?

I agree. But I also have a feeling that as soon as Walt saw an issue, he pointed it out to the first maintenance person he saw and they fixed it almost immediately. I don't think he would accept that a feature in one of his attractions would remain broken for months or years...

That's correct. Maintenance costs such as this one would be considered operating expenses and would subtract from Net Income. The Fantasyland Expansion is a Capital Expenditure, which doesn't affect the net income figure. Projects like FLE show up on the Balance Sheet as one asset (cash) being exchanged for other assets (buildings, etc.).
