Old Vacation movies

Here is a question I hope some of you can answer. I have so many old movies of vacations to Disney we have taken through the years, actually about 25. Most are on 8mm tapes, a few on VHS. I know I can take them down to local pharmacy and have them transfered to DVD, but its like $25 for each to do. Its very expensive. My question is ..is there something out there I can purchase to do this myself? I have tried to look but without much success. These movies are treasures to us, but not worth much if we can't watch them. I guess i can try to look for old cameras that play back those 8mm but really want them on DVD...but 25-30 tapes x $25 each ( you can't transfer say 2-3 8mm onto one DVD) ..well you do ythe math.

we have a gizmo (for lack of a better word) that we can hook our camcorder to (both VHS and the 8mm one) and it works with the computer to convert to a DVD. I believe it is from Sony. DH takes care of all the "techie" stuff in the house as his career is a computer/electronic technician, so I can't give you the exact make and model but I do know it is a Sony. Hope this helps.

Pinnacle is a popular brand of consumer-grade video capture device that can be found at any major electronics store. The device connects to the tape player (camcorder or VCR) and records the video onto a computer in a digital format. The digital file can then be burned to a video DVD if you so desire.

I bought a device from Best Buy that allows you to transfer videos to your computer. The device is from Dazzle and uses the Pinnacle software for recording to your computer. You will want to have a huge hard drive when recording, because of the file sizes. I found that to get the best result you want to record at the highest quality possible, which results in huge files. I transferred a 20 minute video and it ended up being over 800 mb. I was then able to covert it to a different format and shrink it without losing much quality and then burn it to DVD. The program did have an option to record the video in DVD format so it would fit on a DVD, but I found out that the quality wasn't as good as saving it in the highest quality and then shrinking it and converting it to DVD format.

I've used computer software, but the easiest thing I found was a DVD/VHS player that also had a built in DVD recorder - it cost $279.00 at Sam's Club last year, and all you have to do it put in a tape and a blank DVD, hit one button to record, and it plays the VHS and records to the DVD at the same time. It was well worth the investment to transfer all of our old home videos.
