No car staying in off-site hotels

Do I need to get a car if I am staying at an off-site hotel? I was thinking of something near DTD. Can I walk to DTD from any of the off-site hotels?

I would highly recommend getting a car if you are not staying at a Disney resort...even if you are staying at a resort on HPB. The transportation from off property is at best bad. Most only run hourly, some will run even less. Many will only take toy to the TTC and then have you rely on Disney transportation from that point. You can walk to DTD form the resorts on HPB but you will not be able to go directly from DTD to any of the 4 parks. You would have to take a bus to a resort and from there go to the parks.

I recommend having a car - your own or a rented vehicle - regardless of if you are staying on property or off property. WDW Transportation is inefficient in general.

I agree - if you're staying offsite then a car is essential to enable you to come and go as you please - not when the hotels transportation dictates.

Disneys Transportation is not inefficient, it is a perk of staying on property and yes, it could be better, but it could be an awful lot worse. Don't knock it - its better than walking :)

Just from experience...if you don't have a car then staying off property is one huge logistical nightmare.

My mom and I have done the WDW trip many times...and neither of us drive.

So when we stay off property, there are some things we have to plan for...like getting back to the hotel only when the transportation is available ...and not when we actually want to leave!

DTD hotels are a little easier, because there is a way to get to the parks via the buses, and also because some have their own...but again...it becomes really inconvienant, and you spend most of the time trying to figure out how to get where you want to go, and waiting for said transportation.

Walking is difficult. There isn't much in the way of pedestrian walkways,(off property, that is) and you think there would be.

If either of us had a licence...you bet we would have a car off property!

In my opinion, if staying on property a car is a luxury as I find Disney transportation very good.

Off property, I would never, ever, go without a car again.

Agree with what everyone above is saying. If you are off site, a car is a must. It will make life so much easier than trying to rely on your hotel's transportation, which could be adequate, but more likely will be a pain. Your time on vacation should be spent enjoying more time doing what you want, not waiting for a bus/van to take you somewhere.

We drive anyway, so we drive everywhere.
With that being said, my Brother came down with his family so we just parked our car and took Disney transportation.
In some instances it was good, but in most cases it was pretty rough.

It is so nice to come and go as you please anywhere anytime.

I'll never ride a bus if I can avoid it.

The hotel cost of on-site vs. off-site may be more than enough of a savings to get your own car anyways. Before making your decision, see what you can get off-site, compared to on-site. Then see how much a car rental would be using the codes from Mousesavers.com.

Unless there is some super special offer you get, off-site with a car will be cheaper.

Remember when you compare price of on-site vs. off-site the other perks that go with staying on site, like Extra Magic Hours, Resort-to-Gift Shop delivery of purchases, Disney Magical Express, etc.

Actually the only real perk of on-site besides "the magic" is EMH... you don't need DME is you have a car and yes you can get Gift Shop to Resort delivery, but off-site people can get Gift shop to park front gate delivery, or in the case of MK, delivery to TTC. This is just as good as resort delivery considering your car isn't much further away.

Yeah I know...But that wasn't in the original question. You don't need DME if you have a car.

I realize it wasn't the original question. I was just adding to your comment about comparing on-site vs. off-site. Without a doubt you can find an off site hotel and a cheap rental car option for less than staying on site. But everyone's individual needs vary; cheapest isn't always the best option. I was just pointing out that comparing on price alone doesn't factor everything else into account.

The idea of "real perk(s)" will vary person to person. As I said above, I am merely pointing out there are other factors in addition to just looking at cost when anyone, original poster or otherwise, looks at booking on-site vs. off-site.

I feel using Disney buses for transportation and not staying on site is just as bad as pool hopping!!!

I also dont think you should be allowed Fast Passes either! :lookaroun

Comfort Inn LBV: (800)999-7300 www.comfortinnorlando.com...its right behind the Crossroads Center at the back entrance to Hotel Plaza Blvd and in walking distance if you are without a car...maybe a mile or less. Its the nearest and most inexpensive hotel I have found in all my years off researching. I have not stayed here but from some friends and the reviews I have read it is a nice place as far as beds and location. It has just been recently remodeled as well.

Hope this helps!
