Very interesting article...

http://www.disneyworldtrivia.com/Mo...s-102-Disney-Siemens-and-Spaceship-Earth.html

Excerpt...
Once the lawyers and paperwork was out of the way, it was now on to the important stuff, the update of Spaceship Earth. Siemens was founded in 1847 by the inventor Werner von Siemens, so futuristic and forward thinking has always been part of the company's heritage. They knew that they wanted to pair this futuristic thinking with the creativity of the Imagineers to capture the essence of “tomorrow” on Spaceship Earth. However, this is not so easily done. The problem with “tomorrow” is that before you know it, its today. Both the Imagineers and the team from Siemens knew that the task of capturing a “new” future -- while still making it seem realistic and in line with the traditions of the ride -- was difficult to begin with. Throw in the factor that they would be working on one of the most famous of all Disney attractions, and it was going to be quite a task.

So they gave up?

Interesting to say the least.. one does wonder when it will be finished..

I know what you mean. However, nothing can ever be completely finished. For instance, you buy an old house. You decide to fix the interior before you move in. After you do that and move in, you start to remodel the exterior/landscaping. Once you are done with that. you decide that you don't like something about the interior so you fix it again. It is cyclical.

thanks wannab for the article!

Luckily the touch screen technology will allow the ending to change and evolve over the years as Siemens will be sponsoring SSE through 2017 or so.

Unlike AT&T which was a more refined and classic-approach company with the excpetion of such things as redoing the global neighborhood or their 1990s "future of communications" ads, Seimens is alot more forward thinking and fun, creative and exciting.

They have shown good merit with project tomorrow with 21st century EPCOT Center edutainment in their fun, creative, and interactive games.

While 2/3 of SSE has been generally agreed to have been done wonderfully with the exception of some complaints that parts of the narration are a little too elementary, the create your future, while a temporary jibjab fad of cutting and pasting your head, atleast allows the touch screen technology to add new things to see and do with the ride in the future.

What they could do is not only do the language selection and where you are from in the beginning of the ride, they could also do the survey in the ascent tunnel, allowing a great deal of the descent to actually have sets or abstract images in it and leave the seeing your video at the very last end of the descent.

It's possible that this is just a starting point for the descent, and that they'll update again in just a few short years. They might be taking the time to develop a more impressive ending, where you actually use your touch screen to interact with the finale in the physical ride space around. How likely this is, I don't know, but it's a nice thought.

I (yes my -.9875254th of an opinion :dazzle:)....I think the greatest thing Disney and Seimens could offer for SSE is choice. Simple as that. I've said this before on wdwmagic that SSE has potential to appeal to all types of guests.

Not only do guests select their langauge and select where they are from...guests should in my honest opinion have the right to have their screen off for the entire ride including the descent if they wanted to.

Though I have supported the Judi Dench narration with the exception of some elementary parts such as backup systems, and those lovely pheonencians...by removing those bits from the narration you would have two different scripts.

One version that is very straightforward and provides facts and other information i.e. the current script which would also use the touch screens at the end...and the other version a more walter cronkite approach with elminating those ementary lines and not using the touch screen would allow anyone to see the ride as they want.

If they pump up the audio in the descent, add more abstract sets, maybe even use more matrix tunnel effects like we are heading back to the present day, then that would allow for a more dramatic ending.

Even if someone who chose to listen to the refined script and not use the touch screen option found the ride to be boring, they would notice other people using their touch screens and could easily reride the attraction again using the touch screen and elementary script option, or a sign out front could explain that you have the ability to choose how you travel in time.

1.) add a computer program to all touch screens that allow an alternative version of SSE consisting of modified judi dench script and having touch screen off in the descent.

2.) add more to the descent such as abstract designs and other abstract data or information.

I agree, anything would be an improvement to the way the descent is now. Some might argue that the triangle panels are an abstract design, but I dont get the purpose with these and they are not appealing. They hang from chicken wire and with wrinkled black curtains. The touch screens were a good idea, but fall short on originality and lack. They are fun sometimes, when it works, (the ride seems to be breaking down constantly now, whether its from this or not Im not sure) but after a couple rides with the cartoon its like big whoop. I wouldnt mind them so much if they just werent so bright, had there of been some type of lighting effect around you like before, this would not have been a problem. A few odd glowing triangles dont cut it or help.
Interesting article, thanks for posting it. I hope they go back in there and realize it needs something more and needs to look better.
