I have a dear friend who claims Walt was a draft dodger. I disagree but am open to the truth. There's five bucks on the line but I am more interested in Walt's good name.

Any response appreciated.

Aloha!

Hi Amy!
I don't have it in front of me, but I think I remember reading that Walt tried to enlist at the age of 16, by lying about his age. His lie was discovered and he went to work for the Red Cross instead. I don't ever remember reading anything about Walt avoiding the draft. Hope this helps!

May I say unabashedly that I adore you? :kiss: And my friend apologizes for his slur.

The Summer of 1918, Walt's brothers had all gone off to war, but Walt was not old enough to join them, attending his final year of high school was all but inconceivable. His best friend and stage partner Russell Maas had many of the same feelings as Walt, and one day announced that the Red Cross was seeking Volunteers, and Russell had decided to join up... Walt decided to join up along with him, despite being a few months shy of his 17th birthday (the required age). He announced to his family his plans, and his father strictly forbid it. Walt's mother Flora explained to Elias that he had already had three of his sons sneak away in the middle of the night to join the armed forces (Walt's older brother and future business partner Roy had joined the Navy), and Flora was not going to let that happen to Walt. So she forged his name on his passport application and Walt adjusted the 190'1' to read 1900, and Walt was accepted into the Amubulance corps... On November 18th, almost two weeks before Walt would be of legal age, Walt left for France aboard the transport ship, the Vaubin.

In short, didn't avoid his duty, never got drafted because he was already volunteering.

/All that from memory
//okay, had to look up the name of the Transport ship
///love Disney history

That is actually another one of those fun Disney urban legends. Here is the snopes article on this very subject.

He was definitely not a draft dodger. As stated, he went so far as to forge his documents so that he could enlist early.

Disney dropped out of high school at 16 so he could join the Army, but the army didn't take him because he was too young.

Instead, Walt and one of his friends decided to join the Red Cross. They were supposed to be 17 years old to join but, against his father's will, his mother forged Walt's birth certificate saying he was born in 1900 instead of 1901. The Red Cross sent him to France for a year. During that year, he drove an ambulance.

And, this info is even part of the "One Man's Dream" film at MGM.
