Sounds Dangerous

MY problem with MGM is that it has 2 great E-ticket attractions (TOT and RnRC) and then NOTHING to support the rest of the park.

The stage shows are SO dated (and pale in comparison to the newer shows at other parks), the park has 2 e-ticket in Star Tours and GMR that were once great and now they are just boring.... the stunt shows have little to no return factor...and of all the parks, the food options at MGM are the worst.

So they are building the new Toy Story ride....but as I see it, the park with then have 3 attractions worth visiting and then NOTHING to support the rest of the park.

It's a shame, but you are so true. MGM used to be a lot better, but has not aged that well. As it stands now, I think I enjoy the Animal Kingdom more. MGM has so much potential, if the focus were only shifted to there. Superstar Television sits empty and Sounds Dangerous might as well sit empty. That is a major area of the park in need of redevelopment. The backlot tour pretty much became lame with the removal of Residential Street and actual productions. Catastrophe Canyon is nothing special anymore either. The Animation tour, or lack there of, is boring. Voyage of The Little Mermaid is good, but getting old. Beauty and the Beast is ok, would be nicer if it was an enclosed theater like the Hyperion Theater in DCA. GMR, which used to be 1 of my favorite rides on property is in need of something to freshen up the ride. Lights Motors Action is good, but I am not going to see it more then 1x on a trip.

I like the atmosphere of MGM, it just lacks the excitement and variety of attractions to keep me there a full day. I don't know if it is more feasible to remove the studio tram tour and expand the park in that direction or replace existing attractions with new attractions, but something needs to be done besides the new Toy Story mania ride.

True. AK has more potential though and more space. :D

DAK is still in its growth stage (although it is almost mature)

DAK is NOW where MGM was in 1994 after Sunset Blvd opened.......

Gee, if that happens this'll be the third empty thing at MGM. The old stage for the Hunchback of Nortre Dame isn't being used (well, I don't think so anyway), and who knows how long Doug's been empty. Disney really needs to make new plans at MGM for all those empty things...

Where exactly was these show located. Perhaps a map would help.

Oh yea, the Sounds dangerous thing is a definate waste of space. Atleast toy story mania is a step in the right direction IMO. So hopefully its slowly coming into something great.

East or West...

Someone said recently that DCA was becoming MGM-West.

The way MGM is declining, I think it's becoming DCA East. We will know for sure when they open the tortilla factory.

I loved when it used to be the Monster Sound Show.

I'm afraid that even if the Sounds Dangerous ride closes, it doesn't mean Disney will be ready to replace it quite yet. Just look at how long the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea sat there before it was turned into Pooh's Playful Spot.

Other than the Stunt show, what else has been added to the Studios? It's seems to have gotten the least amount of attention. It's time for Disney to refiurb most of the park.

Based on everyone's responses, I think the consenus is that MGM Studios needs a major renovation by replacing some of the current attractions and finding new attractions for some of the empty stages/theaters. I also think that Lights, Motors, Action was a mistake...my friends and I could do that stuff in our cars.

What are you doing on WDWmagic? You and your friends have an amazingly bright future ahead of you as stunt drivers

I love MGM, but then I love anything movie themed. Sounds Dangerous is interesting the first time you see it, corny, dorky, but interesting. I love the "sound" theme in the dark, letting your imagination take over. But, after seeing it too many times to count, I would not mind something new, and the real reason we go in the building now is to get out of the heat in the summer.

My two cents on MGM.

1. Close Beauty and the Beast, Live on Stage - rehab the theater into an actual Broadway-style, air conditioned theater on the caliber of Aladdin at DCA. Put BatB back in, reworked with a Broadway feel. The show could change every 5-10 years.

2. Take Pocahontas out of Fantasmic, replace her something new and fresh, or a Disney classic.

3. Sounds Dangerous and ABC Theater - either combine the two for one large attraction or put something useful in each.

4. Star Tours - so outdated - either redo it as a motion sim., completely, or take the ride out and build another Star Wars attraction in its place.

5. Epic- although a great show - it's old. Take it out and replace it with an Indy attraction. I COMPLETELY agree with an earlier poster - this would be a GREAT water ride -- with the boats that hold 16-24 passengers per boat. Heavily themed jungle/temple/adventure, etc.

6. Muppets - i know this is a loooong shot - but redo the Muppet Vision. The 3D effects are barely noticeable except the only "non-muppet" CG character. Why not make an entire Muppet Land - Muppet Movie, Dark Ride, wacky coaster, etc. Could you imgagine the themeing and restaurant possibilites - and seeing Gonzo, Fozzie, Kermit, Piggie, Rowlf, Animal, etc as walk around characters in their "home"?

7. Backlot tour - i don't even know where to begin... it's just old and scaled down way too small. If MGM were an actual working studio it would be better.

8. ToT - :)
9. RnRc - :)

10. PLEASE take the hat down - it RUINS the beautiful themeing of Hollywood Blvd, and the very detailed and beautifully replicated Grauman's Theater.

11. Voyage of the Little Mermaid - great idea, old show. Update it or change it completely.

12. Animation - i just miss the animators.

13. Toy Story Mania looks like it's going to be amazing!

14. Can we add about 5,000 new Streetmosphere characters to Hollywood and Sunset Blvds? I love them!

15. Can we get an E-Ticket on the backside of the park that rivals E:E or ToT?

haha - it sounds like i would change everything, and I probably would - but I love this park!

I agree MGM needs help!

My wife and I recently went to MGM and we haven't been since like 1998. MAN! has this park changed a lot since I was a kid! As a child this park inspired me to get into entertainment production! Once, I even got taped to be the cue card holder during the moon landing scene on the Superstar Television attraction! I was surprised to see Disney had closed down that attraction especially since they own ABC and ESPN. Anyway, the park was a mess the gift shops didn't have anything exciting the food was lacking and don't even get me started on the Journey into Nardia attraction I really expected more from Disney and the thought that they actually had to refurb that attraction makes me a little nervous about what it use to be like! However, that would make a great pre show to a Nardia themed attraction similar in ride system design to Universal's Revenge of the Mummy! Anyway, I haven't seen the Fantasmic and Extreme Stunt show but I doubt that will impress me enough to change my opinon about the parks current state. I was however overjoyed with version 4 of ToT. I haven't ridden that ride since 1998 until a couple of weekends ago. MAN! if you haven't ridden it recently you gotta try it! I couldn't believe the audio visual and fiber optics really cool! Oh and having nothing to hold on to certainly increased the drop experience! Other than that I agree the hat needs to be some place else like mabey at the enterence to Fantasmic! Well, then again I guess that would screw things up at Epcot's Moracco or whatever pavilion you can see ToT from I am just a fan not an imadgineer. However, wouldn't that be a cool job?

does anyone have an aerial pic of MGM with surrounding land?

I don't have one, but there isn't much room for expansion if that's what you're wondering. The biggest piece of land that could be taken down to rebuild something significantly big would be the Epic theater (Indiana Jones). Everything else pretty much borders Perimeter Road and/or offices and other backstage areas. Other than Epic, maybe the Hunchback Theater could be changed up but then a) The San Francisco facade would go away and b) I don't know where they'd keep the SOL lights.
