Few more details on Monsters, Inc. delay

A comedy club show based on the popular Monsters, Inc. movie apparently isn't quite ready for the big time.

Walt Disney World has confirmed that the opening of its next big attraction -- The Monsters, Inc. The Laugh Floor Comedy Club show -- will be delayed a few months so that Walt Disney Imagineering can make adjustments now that test audiences got to try it out earlier this month.

The Magic Kingdom attraction draws on characters from the 2001 Pixar Animation movie, Monsters, Inc., and uses new technology to give audiences an interactive, sometimes improvisational, robotic comedy show. The attraction was built into the old Timekeeper location in Tomorrowland.

The Laugh Floor Comedy Club was slated to have passholder previews, then a grand opening, in January. But now those won't happen until sometime in the spring, said Disney spokesman Jacob DiPietre.

The delay will give staff members a chance for more training in the complex technology being used, and writers a chance to re-script parts of the show based on audience feedback, he said.

DiPietre would not elaborate on what script changes would be made or why. However, audiences reportedly have been lukewarm to the humor.

Chris Eliopoulos, who was in one test audience, said he thought the overall structure was sound and the crowd found the technology exciting, but the humor was a bit flat and the jokes didn't hit their marks. However, Eliopoulos, 39, of New Jersey, himself a humor writer and cartoonist, respectfully pointed out that humor is hard work.

"Humor that is funny for all ages is even harder," he conceded.

The Laugh Floor Comedy Club is one of three attractions that Disney World expected to open in short order during the early part of the Year of a Million Dreams promotion that began in October. At Epcot, a ride called The Seas with Nemo and Friends opened in November. At Disney's Animal Kingdom, a stage show called Finding Nemo -- The Musical had a soft opening this month and prepares for an official premiere in January.

Thanks for posting. Sounds like the suspicions (sp?) as to the delay are all true. Kudos to them for taking their time on this- as long as it makes the attraction better than it is in its present state.

Oh no!!! I was telling my 6 year old that this attraction would be open when we go on Feb 3- 10!!!

I was telling our (almost) 6 and 3 year old the same thing. Oh well.... as long as the 3 year old can grow an inch before Jan 17, he'll be more than thrilled just to get to ride Test Track. :)

I'm hoping it's open by April, but if not, I'm glad they're taking the extra time to make it great instead of just good. Thanks for sharing the article.

I know it's disappointing for those who are going in the next few months who now won't be able to see it...but I really think this is for the best. I'm glad they are not doing this half @$$ed.

This is a VERY GOOD DECISION.

I can elaborate more later, but my family and I were lucky (?) enough to be invited in as members of a test audience to the Laugh Floor Comedy Club when we were visiting the Magic Kingdom on December 15th. Later, the next week, we visited Turtle Talk with Crush for the fifth or sixth time since it opened (at both Epcot and California Adventure). Even after multiple viewings, Turtle Talk is much, much fresher and funnier than Laugh Floor was for us. Even allowing for the technological blips and sketchy animation, Laugh Floor was dull, and really not very funny at all. I found myself laughing just to make the Imagineers present feel better, because almost nothing made me laugh spontaneously.

The show needs a lot of work and Disney is right to give it more time and polish before its grand unveiling.

I feel good knowing that they are making an effort to run all these test shows and then take their time... they should've run test shows for Stitch Encounter...

They did! Can you believe it?!

Then the over-eager marketing department slapped Stitch all over everything to try to convince Guests that it's a good attraction!

Let's hope that the revised LFCC is actually funny. If WDI pulls this off correctly, it'll be a great attraction.

Heading for the great escape.
Its a tough job, how can you cater for such a cross section of tastes in humour and keep things apropriate for a mixed age group. I think this has great potential to crash and burn. To childish for some or too risque for others.

Mind you some people find Jungle Cruise funny.:brick: and some think Borat is hilarious.

Good to see that they're trying to improve something rather than just rushing am attraction out. Although I am getting scared about it. I don't have much confidence about the end product about this attraction anymore. I don't understand why they are so high on these screen technologies, they aren't that great. If they wanted to put a MI ride in, why not a dark ride?

Well I'm glad that they are going to wait, I'd rather have a delay and a good show open. It sounds like neat technology though, sort of like Turtle Talk with Crush, which I have to say is HYSTERICAL. I found the comment of 'making it funny for all ages' interesting, as I imagine that would be quite difficult. Turtle Talk really did that statement justice, I don't think anyone left that theater thinking it wasn't fun.
