Speaking of not breaking even, the $40M documentary Melania ended its theatrical run at $16.6M today.

Same for the under $10M budget Psycho Killer ending its run at $2.6M

And in Oscars news, apparently something called One Battle After Another won Best Picture??? My dinner mates and I last night, while waiting for the waitress to bring the check, saw that on our phones and we all said "Never heard of it."

It came out about 6 months ago and made $72 Million domestically, so at least it wasn't some obscure artsy fartsy thing that made $4 Million across a dozen college campuses. But still. Did anyone here see this movie? I don't remember anyone mentioning it here.

I did and enjoyed it quite a bit, but then again I'm onboard with pretty much all of PTA's efforts (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, The Master, etc.) to date. It's pretty crowd-pleasing compared to most of his stuff, which is how it ended up being the #1 scripted movie two weeks in a row. [Note: I know that the Taylor Swift event was #1 in its second week.] It felt a bit like a Tarantino movie to me, but toned down a few notches and created with purpose.

I saw it on Prime. Was very well shot and edited.

I guess it was fine overall. Don't really know what more they could've done for what they were aiming for, but it was a little underwhelming IMO, but 1.5/10 on IMDB is review bombing 101.

I just couldn't get into it, and I adore There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights. PTA winning for this kind of thing would be like Spielberg winning for one of his weaker films IMO.

I don't really think Sinners is a Best Picture caliber movie, but it was the better movie and far more creative between the two IMO, kind of wish it won.

Agreed that score is insane (much like the Snow White one you cited upthread), but it's got a 5 MetaScore and is 11% fresh, so it's possible that brand of propaganda doesn't make for a formally good film.

Curiously, the popcorn meter is 98%. Do we have a term for reverse review bombing?

I've never seen a 1 on IMDB ever.

I think Snow White is legitimately Disney's worst theatrical big-budget release ever, so honestly, it probably would sit at a 4.something if not for some trolls that brought it down slightly.

I thought Snow White was worse than Cats, and that stands at 2.8, which I feel is fair, even if historically low for IMDB, but not THAT low.

FWIW, I think Captain Marvel's review bombing was always ludicrous. I may be the only person who thoroughly enjoyed that movie despite its faults, and the 90s vibe was cool, with the Skrulls being honestly one of the MCU's highlights for me, but all the "You must accept" the Star Wars Sequels, GOT, etc., was all gaslighting to force audiences to accept slop.

So I'm against review bombing in general, but Snow White was so unusually bad, same with the Pinnocchio remake, that they are in a league of their own in terms of just flat out garbage lol.

I didn't think the Melania documentary was abysmal; it was just okay, it's a 5-6/10 in a vacuum, kind of like a Christopher Robbin.

I believe that Snow White's score was significantly lower upon release and has slowly (and rightfully) been rising since then. It's a solid 6 or 7 for me in that I would recommend it to fans of certain other things.

But your posts are putting all the blame on the leading young ladies for the quality of the movie. Instead of you know the people who directed, produced, designed the costumes, songwriters or screenwriters.

IDK man, it's an actual 1/10 as far as I'm concerned, and based on anecdotes in my life, every person I know hated it, even Disney fans that are usually Pixie Dusters. Even my small cousin got her mom to leave the theater mid movie, and I jokingly asked if she was just bored, and she was like "No, it was just awful," to paraphrase. I didn't even push my opinion.

Forget the lead; the movie was just so ugly to look at, and it just didn't make sense as a war movie, and the whole approach to it all was just so cringeworthy. It was like a parody.

And just based on online discussion, it is squarely pegged with the Pinocchio remake.

To me, those are both in leagues of their own in terms of just absolute trash, along with Rise of Skywalker. All 1/10s, devoid of any artistic expression and just pure laziness or people patting themselves on the back.

Rachel Zegler was the highlight of the movie. It's the other parts that brought the movie down for me. I would've liked to see GDT's take on a modernized retelling of Snow White. We got a taste of it with Pan's Labyrinth.

I usually skip the remakes unless I'm a previous fan of an actor or director, even when they're on D+.

With $86 Million after two weekends, and a drop of 37% with no competition, I'm not sure break even is in the cards.

What about 165 million(worldwide totals thus far) which I am sure are the totals Disney is looking at

I can’t recall the last time I’ve watched any of the major awards shows, when you haven’t seen most the movies, and don’t know most the actors, it’s just random people talking about random stuff which is ultimately very boring.

There's also a ton of corruption with wining and dining and marketing campaigns.

I find it to be a fun spectacle when people aren't trying to make it about themselves, something to follow on X, but I wouldn't sit down and watch every second.

At least until we start seeing better quality movies again. I made a point to see if Parasite and Oppenheimer won because those movies to me, were so high quality I wanted to see them have even more exposure.

I tend to enjoy the awards shows, even though I also probably haven’t seen most of the movies. At least I saw sinners this year, and enjoyed it. The other one with Leonardo and Penn, we put it on at home, and I couldn’t sit through it. I was falling asleep, Brian didn’t like it, either, and we turned it off.

But I still recognize many of the actors at the ceremonies; I enjoy seeing them, and the tributes, and yes, the comments.

I get that…. Much of the general public have not seen most of the films…. Since these days people are mostly just interested in the big IP blockbuster franchise films….however my wife and I are film people… We go to the theater every week… and usually have seen most of the best pictures by the time nominations are announced…. Then get caught up on anything we have missed among all movies

I am actually wondering what the ratings are like this year….I have not gone and look at the grosses of the nominated the last few recent years… but it feels this years crop attracted more audiences then usual…. F1 and Sinners put up some large numbers…. Plus you have One Battle After Another and Marty Supreme putting up decent numbers as well…. Plus the politics( never bothered me)was toned down this year….and I found Conan entertaining… but I am a Conan fan
