For those of you who have seen this in person, what are your thoughts on how distracting it is while walking past it from Sunset Boulevard's main stretch to Tower of Terror?

The original design was very careful to avoid competing with the Tower of Terror approach experience: (1) the archway was set back from the street, (2) the archway's style matched the areas's aesthetic (it's art deco -inspired), and (3) the car's shape and color blended it into the archway when viewed from one's periphery while walking towards Tower of Terror.

The first two remain as they were (unless a jarring "Muppets" sign is added to the archway), but (3) has of course changed somewhat via the car's color scheme (recognizing that it's not finished, but is already colorful and will surely be when complete). I hope the change is not enough to draw attention to the car in a way that breaks the spell of the Tower of Terror approach experience.

The guitar and Cadillac are the last remnants of the loud and gaudy design era in WDI. Other examples include the Castle Cake, Wand, Hat, old COP marquee and All-Star Resorts.

Don't confuse when the lightning struck the Tower with when we visit it. If anything, the Muppet overlay could conceivably move us further back than say, Aerosmith.
Oh for sure! Is there an actual timeline for sunset? There’s a few contradictions. Trolley wire is still up, but trolley tracks are partially paved over so at least some trolley lines are now out of service. But red car trolley service is still being advertised so that’s before 1961.

So it seems sunset is 1945-55 era?

You're overthinking it. ToT is from the 1930s. The original RnRC was basically set in the present to visit Aerosmith. Now's it's the Muppets. You walk around a corner, out of view of the RnRC entrance to enter ToT anyway. 🤷‍♂️
