News Disney and Miral Announce New Seventh Theme Park Planned for Abu Dhabi

It will actually be interesting to see if the UAE follows other designs that limit the Americana aspects of the parks to make it less American. Tokyo, Shanghai, etc feel very Disney but with very little “Americana” compared to the US parks, Paris parks, Hong Kong park, etc.

Yes I think so. Bob trotted out the Authentically Disney, Uniquely Emirati line that he previously used for SDL.

I personally think it’s far more interesting to produce something that celebrates the culture of where it is built than porting straight Americana. They seemed to have mostly, but not perfectly, threaded that needle on a Shanghai.

I doubt the UAE and the broader Middle East is going to significantly pivot from their tourism drive unless there is a protracted major economic downside.

And well… this probably won’t hurt the price of oil.

Disneyland was a known target of the thwarted New Year's Eve 2000 plots.

Every time this country pokes a bear, that bear looks for symbols of Americana to strike.
Disney Springs came close to being a target of what is now the massacre at the Pulse nightclub which also resulted in the passing of a MK cast member. One factor that drove Mateen away was the substantial presence of law enforcement inside Springs when he was there.

Disney Springs has comprehensive security now though, unlike 2016.

I think when they built the Hong Kong park, they were leaning very heavily on Chinese cultural influences which I think hurt the park in the end... The Chinese wanted to experience a DISNEY theme park.... with a lot of attractions...and Eisner team was betting they would want to shop and eat more.... which I think hampered the park in its early years, and hastened the addition of more attractions almost immediately....
What hurt that park was they cut the budget in half halfway through development. They opened a nice, but small park with only one e-ticket.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this…
Yeah, today has not been what I expected, I thought they’d go after the US and Israel but instead they seem to be going after anyone they’ve ever had a beef with.

I fear for the Iranian people, I would not be surprised if a couple of the many nations hit today retaliate in kind. Israel and the US were primarily going after military/leadership targets but if the Iranian regime keeps going after neighboring civilians (primarily hotels and airports) they’re going to invoke a massive response and there may not be anything left in Iran to rebuild from.

I doubt anyone expected a kamikaze approach to be their first course of action.

I don’t want to get into the realm of international politics..but the intelligence analysts I’ve seen have repeated the same warnings verbatim.

I think they’re probably right

That’s way overstated.

That was a hardware issue…and it turned out to be nothing. I was an employee who also was in Epcot on 12/31/99…they had emergency generators and temp lights all over the place…at great expense. It wasn’t a cyber attack or a plot…it was a misunderstanding of a developing computer dependency

Have you not heard of the millennium attack plot? We're not talking about Y2K, we're talking about A series of incidents that were foiled. Two different things.

Are you referring to the rather amateurish attempts in Jordan and at LAX?

Did they move Disneyland to LAX that day? They’re not that close

According to UPI:
Former CIA officials told United Press International that southern California's Disneyland and Seattle's Space Needle were targets of foiled 1999 millennium bombing, attack financed and advised by Saudi millionaire terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Ehhh…nothing ever substantiated really…

Supposely wdw was under “grave danger” in 2001…it seems to be mostly bluster

Also remember that particularly group wanted to “blow up everything in the great intifada”

You know what? This is depressing…let’s talk about villains land 🤪
Slightly less depressing

Always grateful WDW’s mantra was to be the vacation kingdom of the world and not “Authenticity Floridian”
When one ponders "Drinking Around the World," and people climbing the Mexico pavilion, getting out of boats in the middle of a ride, the attempts to bring a gun into a park, and all the brawls, then the catchphrase should be "Authentically Disney, Uniquely Florida Man."
