General Star Wars Discussion

Look on the bright side, right now Star Trek is so bad thanks to Starfleet Academy that whatever Disney creates for Star Wars can’t possibly be worse…

All we have left is The Orville IF WE EVER GET A NEW SEASON!!!!!!
I tried to watch the first episode on YouTube tonight and only made it about 30 minutes before I turned it off, sadly I can think of a couple recent Star Wars shows that have been just as bad though (and that I also didn’t make through the first episode).

I seem to find myself turning off more and more new shows and movies without finishing them over the last several years, often wondering if the studios really thought they made a good product or if they just don’t care anymore, I suspect they’re just releasing whatever content they can spew out simply for the sake of having new content so people don’t cancel their subscription.

I can say with 100% certainty that nothing about that free episode would get me to subscribe to Paramount+ though, if that was their goal with releasing the new episode of Star Trek for free on YouTube I think it’s going to fail miserably.

A lot of content these days are made for short attention spans, ie they are made around the idea that most viewers will also be looking at their phone at the same time. Its why there is a lot of repeat of exposition for example, in case someone missed it the first time.

You can thank social media for that.

The question now is just what Disney is going to do going forward.

TLJ fractured the fan base, the Acolyte turned off tons of people and pretty much finished what TLJ started. They are now at the point where they can go one of two ways.

One way: Are they going to continue to try and and get people to engage with the sequels? The second? Return to OT focused stuff. Either way there are going to be fans that are upset.
I'd say the 3rd option is a major time jump. Either go way back or jump way ahead. Jump back, let's say knights of the old Republic. And all you have to do is not have to do something like blow up Alderaan... Go 6 or 7 hundred years or more forward and you are completely free of any issues from the sequels, prequels a originals.

I'd prefer go to knights of the old Republic because most all of the heavy lifting has been done already. It's a loved story by most fans. And it's a story that never received a proper ending. They can collaborate with the people who originally made the story finish it.

That’s probably fair, I checked it out in part because it’s being skewered so badly online I was curious, to be honest I didn’t find it horrible, nowhere near as bad as the hate it’s getting anyway, I just found the characters very unappealing.

I was already struggling a bit because I found the Captains acting stiff, which was driving me a bit crazy, then the criminal kid gets invited to join the best of the best, which drove me a bit crazier, but when the blue alien lady started screaming at him I knew I wasn’t going to like the main characters, and if I don’t like the main characters I know I’m not going to enjoy a show.

I think that’s my primary problem with a lot of shows now, I don’t find the main characters likable, I realize I’m not the target age group anymore but I always wonder who these characters do appeal to.

I haven't seen it so can't comment on it. But the way you describe it its bit like a live action version of Prodigy the 2nd season where they are in Starfleet Academy, which makes sense since its all part of the same expanded Kurtzman universe, so that would seem to indicate it might be more targeted for a younger audience.

Let’s go with this. Say they do KOTOR.

That would potentially solve only part of the problem. Why? If they simply move the timeline and produce something in the vein of TLJ or the Acolyte?

All they’ve done is shift the devisive content to a different portion of the timeline.

In other words what they do is far more important than when. Disney has already acknowledged this with their comments a few months back on (paraphrasing) “needing to attract young men to franchises.”

Obviously I’m trying to tap dance around it, as best I can with the constraints of this site. If they simply deliver another Acolyte style show? They’d be better off just lighting the money on fire. At least if they did that it would give off heat and light as a positive outcome as opposed to none by repeating what the majority of fans have been rejecting since TLJ.

I completely agree. My only real counter is that when I say to do Knights. That doesn't mean make up your own story with hints of the original. The story Bioware told, in my opinion, is one of the best star wars stories to date outside of the OT. And a Huge number of fans feel the same. That's why I say the heavy lifting is done already.

But if they do ANYTHING similar to the acolyte they will have a major flop on their hands. Disney is a very play it safe company. And this would be as play it safe as you can get with star wars in my eyes. Just as long as they stay true to the original. I won't say this often, but take a page from Amazon. Fallout is awesome. So work with the creators and writers of the original, and get people who know and care about the story. Do that and it gives you a good chance for success I believe.
