If Disney wanted to try and repair as much of the damage as quickly as possible, they'd announce a Luke Skywalker film starring Sebastian Stan taking place one year after Return of the Jedi ends. Fix as much of the "we intentionally ruined Luke" damage as they can in order to get the old fanbase to re-engage and be somewhat enthusiastic again. And use the film to introduce Mara Jade and to show Han and Leia as a happy married couple.

In what may be a surprise: I have a number of reservations about filoni
I do too but am willing to give him a chance, some of his early Mandalorian shows rank as the best Star Wars content we’ve seen in decades, some of his Boba Fett shows rank as the worst Star Wars content we’ve seen in decades, it’ll be interesting to see what we end up getting now that he can make whatever he wants.

🤞🏻

I’m just glad Kennedy is finally gone, she destroyed everything I loved about Star Wars and gave us failure after failure, I’ll never understand how she lasted as long as she did in that position.

Too little too late.

The groups/friends I’m with when it comes to Star Wars? It’s mostly a “meh” reaction these days. That’s on Disney, not the fans. Fans don’t make the films and can’t be forced to go watch.

And when they didn’t go and watch? Blaming the fans for it was a dumb move. Then continuing to blame them in light of multiple outlets these day for media and entertainment? Even dumber.

As far as Katheeen Kennedy herself? At the time it seemed like she was the right person for the job. Then proceeded to miss the easiest layup ever in regards to SW.

Because she had better lawyers and agents that managed to threaten sit com Bob…is my guess

And the chaos of Covid probably benefitted her as well

Very wise people have repeated for 50 years that Luke Skywalker is the backbone of the whole thing…

It was never grumpy Harrison or good times carrie or boba fett 🙄

But I don’t know if trying to retcon the mistakes made can ever work.

They can’t do movies right…and are painfully much worse at tv.

"Ms. Kennedy was initially set to hand over the “Star Wars” controls in 2024, but she agreed to a contract extension."

Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm President and ‘Star Wars’ Boss, Steps Down
Brooks Barnes

‘Star Wars’ Boss Departs, Ending an Asteroid-Filled Reign
Kathleen Kennedy stepped down as Lucasfilm’s president and returned to producing. Two studio veterans took over.
“Star Wars” has new emperors.
Disney said on Thursday that Kathleen Kennedy would step down as the president of Lucasfilm after nearly 14 years, a period marked by successes (“The Mandalorian,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Andor”), some misses (“Solo”) and near-constant culture-war-related turbulence. She will be succeeded by Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer, and Lynwen Brennan, the studio’s business affairs and operations chief.
Their appointments are effective immediately. Mr. Filoni, 51, will hold the title of president while remaining chief creative officer. Ms. Brennan, 58, will be co-president. Ms. Kennedy, 72, will return to her storied producing career, which started in 1982 with “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Poltergeist.” She is a lead producer for two upcoming “Star Wars” movies.
Disney gave her an effusive send-off, even by Hollywood standards, with Robert A. Iger, the company’s chief executive, calling Ms. Kennedy “a visionary” in a statement and Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, also lavishing praise on her.
Lucasfilm is extraordinarily difficult to run. The studio’s movies and TV shows are expensive to make because they rely on extensive visual effects, leading to intense scrutiny from Wall Street and the news media. At the same time, the “Star Wars” fan base can be toxic and resistant to change — especially regarding diversity in casting and storytelling, both of which Ms. Kennedy prioritized. Racist and misogynistic voices often overshadow positive discussion about new films and shows.
Ms. Kennedy was initially set to hand over the “Star Wars” controls in 2024, but she agreed to a contract extension. At the time, Lucasfilm was in the throes of putting together “Star Wars: Starfighter,” a high-stakes movie directed by Shawn Levy and intended to evolve the franchise beyond the Skywalker saga. Lucasfilm was also smarting from “The Acolyte,” an expensive Disney+ show that was criticized for its diverse cast. Disney canceled it after one season, citing inadequate viewership.
In choosing Lucasfilm veterans as Ms. Kennedy’s successors, Disney is signaling that it believes the boutique studio is on the right path. The selections can also be interpreted as a conciliatory nod to fans: The “Star Wars” you know and love is safe.
Mr. Filoni, an idiosyncratic executive with a fondness for western wear, has worked at Lucasfilm for 21 years. He is known for his strong standing among “Star Wars” die-hards: They tend to trust him, in part because he was mentored by George Lucas, who created “Star Wars” in 1977. Mr. Filoni has been a producing and writing force behind hit Lucasfilm shows like “Ahsoka,” “The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels” and “The Mandalorian.”
Ms. Brennan, who grew up in Wales, is a 27-year Lucasfilm veteran. She got her start at Industrial Light & Magic, the Lucasfilm-affiliated visual effects company. Ms. Brennan has recently managed the studio’s games, publishing and consumer products divisions.
Ms. Kennedy took over Lucasfilm from Mr. Lucas in 2012. He sold the studio to Disney for $4 billion shortly thereafter.
Eager to show a return on its investment, Disney pushed Ms. Kennedy to begin cranking out “Star Wars” movies. She swiftly delivered a new trilogy that generated nearly $5 billion in ticket sales — a triumph. A blockbuster fourth film, “Rogue One,” took in more than $1 billion.
With a creative team that included the filmmaker Jon Favreau, Ms. Kennedy then served up “The Mandalorian.” It was a sensation, almost single-handedly making Disney’s streaming service an overnight success. “Andor,” an acclaimed 2022 series, was another notable achievement.
Along the way, Ms. Kennedy became a lightning rod.
She tried to make “Star Wars” more appealing to women and minorities; the fan base, while colossal, was (and is) largely male and white. Many fans praised the effort, but another faction recoiled. In 2023, “South Park” parodied Ms. Kennedy as giving the same feedback on every project: “Put a chick in it! Make her lame and gay!”
For a time in the middle of her tenure, Ms. Kennedy became known for clashing with film directors over tone and style, leading to their departures. Several “Star Wars” movie projects were announced and then quietly scrapped, annoying fans. “Solo” sputtered at the box office in 2018, prompting Disney to slow the “Star Wars” movie output.
Lucasfilm appears to have regained its footing. In May, the “Star Wars” franchise will return to movie screens for the first time since 2019 with “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” The movie, directed by Mr. Favreau, could give sales of “Star Wars” merchandise a needed jolt.
Ditto “Starfighter,” which stars Ryan Gosling. It is scheduled for release in May 2027, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of “Star Wars.”
Brooks Barnes is the chief Hollywood correspondent for The Times. He has reported on the entertainment industry for 25 years.
Words like, Racist, misogynistic, Nazi, Fascist have been used so much for everything and everyone that the words have lost their meaning and impact in my opinion.

Repair with whom?

My relationship with Star Wars and LucasFilm isn't damaged.

And who are they supposed build bridges to? Fans of George Lucas? The same George Lucas they crucified for the prequel trilogy, but once Disney bought LucasFilm, George is a hero to them?

She ultimately had hits and misses during her tenure.

Same with George Lucas.

I haven't found any of Filoni's animated series to be particularly engaging. I have nothing bad to say about them, they just aren't the pinnacle of Star Wars to me like some feel they are.

I liked Ahsoka but it rely on redoing a lot of standard Star Wars tropes. The common fear with Filoni being expressed is that he'll play it too safe and give us familiar Star Wars comfort food.

Not shocking Disney would want that given the positive reaction to sequels and remakes this year, to say nothing of The Force Awakens.

You have to take some risks and try something new to keep the franchise going. Does Filoni take a risk on something like Andor which was amazing?

Great idea!

And use the film to introduce Mara Jade and to show Han and Leia as a happy married couple.

Yeah, but not too happy. Still snarky, with notable sexual tension, and a dollop of bravado & 'tude. Which equals pure love. 😍

I don't think Ms. Kennedy or the team she assembled is capable of that type of heterosexual couple in their storytelling. Which was just one of the many problems the Star Wars franchise was burdened with for the past decade plus.

Fans of the original trilogy story who were turned off to the franchise by Disney's approach to Luke Skywalker (and to a lesser extent, the lore) and who are now apathetic (or in some instances, hostile) to the franchise.

My relationship with Star Wars and LucasFilm isn't damaged.

Nobody has been more the fool about Star Wars

Somewhere buried in the hard drive on this site…there’s a nearly 10 year old tussle where the bird argued for a month that the last Johnson was “just like” empire strikes back…based on a box office chart that meant nothing then or now

Other than the minor detail that one made the franchise and one has all but destroyed it…

…this is why the joker was always the more superior villain.

It’ll be interesting to see how Mando and Grogu does at the box office, that’ll be the ultimate indicator of whether or not the brand is damaged.

The prequels and sequels all got a lot of pushback for being mediocre overall but Star Wars fans still showed up and they all made bank (with the exception of Solo), if Mando can pull in a billion it’ll show the brand is still healthy, every dollar under a billion likely equals a % of people who have lost faith in the brand though.

My guess is on $500-600 million, but I think the brand is damaged so that’s affecting my prediction, maybe I’ll be wrong and it’ll pull in a billion and prove me wrong.

Money talks, Mando and Grogu will give us our answer as to whether or not it’s damaged.

It should make money…”should” being key

But the trailers look beyond stupid. Almost as if they’re spoofs.

I fear they did it again…as in the biggest Hollywood mistake repeated constantly: that you have to be emotionally 6 years old to like Star Wars.

That really gets the natives angry. And it’s kinda understandable at this point.
