WOL Demo coming ..

So how’s WoL? When are the wrecking balls coming through? I really hope they don’t take the building down and just repurpose it to a different attraction.
Dome still empty, Play still canceled. Food and Wine just ended so all that stuff is making its way into the warehouse formerly known as Body Wars. One would hope them going through the effort to load all that stuff in suggests they have no imminent demo plans.

I was curious if they still stored that stuff in there. I was actually just talking to some family who just went to Disney recently who hadn’t been since sometime before Covid. Was upset about many changes, but didn’t like that there weren’t the fun show kitchens and celebrity chefs like they used to have during food and wine and how the festival center used to be in WoL. I doubt they will be back to Disney for a very long time, for a many number of reasons.

I think festivals was always a poor use of the WoL space, but it was still always pleasant going in there and seeing all that stuff. Certainly better than what’s going on there now. The story goes that EPCOT operations refused to surrender the Body Wars space to WDI because it was seen as an essential storage facility for them, which leads me to believe Wonders won’t go down until they have a replacement facility ready

Won’t go down as in demolished or just repurposed?

Demolished. I had heard whispers of activity there about a month or two ago which I was led to believe were discussions on another gut job, then this thread popped up which had me worried about a full demo. Body Wars is still an active facility, and I doubt they would go through the effort of taking the rest of the structure down and leaving Body Wars standing. I have chosen to stop panicking about it until we either see permits filed or something that could be the Body Wars replacement pop up elsewhere.

  • From esteemed Future World pavilion packed with so much life (pun intended) & several attractions
  • To glorified multi-purpose building/storage area with said attractions' elements seemingly slowly stripped away year after year (per "yestersite")
  • To mostly-gutted partially-used glorified storage space with ugly roof redo (I saw the gutted building pictures on Twitter recently...most sad).
I can only think of a handful of instances where a significant part of the building was spared demo, and that was because of both architectural and historical significance.

Some of my favorite examples (not only because of personal local connections but also because of how it was handled):

If they restored the WoL dome to its former glory, I'd love for it to be spared & incorporated into something exciting for the future.

There is no reason they could not save the dome... and no reason they could not build an inexpensive warehouse for storage that is not in the park proper... They are just using it because it is unused and there..... They really should do something wonderful with the existing structure.... The actual building is great....and huge enough to host a multi-attraction pavilion like it once did... Tearing it down completely would be such a huge waste of money...like they did to Communicore West....Which could have been repurposed and reprogrammed with all new offerings and attractions....

You aren't still irrationally activated from all the excitement from Communicore Hall, the center spine lights, the planter-of-questionable-design, Journey of Water, et al? There is just no pleasing some people... ;)
All those many millions to completely replace original Communicore building (but with a "Meet & Greet") with.... Communicore Hall (but with a "Meet & Greet")

Sadly in this day and age Horizons 2.0 would be a 1 minute and 50 second ride, all of the scenes from the original ride would be condensed into a pre-show queue, and the ride itself would be a screen based simulator of the journey to Mesa Verde, Sea Castle. and Brava Centauri. There would be possibly one animatronic, and would open with LL Plus reservations only.

I would argue by tearing down WOL in saves cost on trying to save the building and also allows future expansion in a valuable area. I'm all for it. EPCOT needs more and I am hopeful especially with EPCOT's 50th coming up

Is the building really beyond saving, though? It's from 1989 so no worry about asbestos. The roof tiles were replaced fairly recently. Work was going on for Play pavilion so clearly it was deemed a viable structure.

The last half-decade has been enough excitement for me as far as EPCOT is concerned. I would actually take the sad state of EPCOT in 2019 over what has happened since.
that's pretty bad. Haven't been since the "revamp" but I remember lamenting while walking thru (2018), how overwhelmingly run-down my one-time favorite park had become😬 At least they got rid of those barges that never looked non-bad in any photos/videos? 🤷‍♂️ I don't know who was smoking what when the decision to add them was made! 🤯

I think....in-spite of all this....EPCOT is my new favorite park again ....but only "by default." It had shifted to Magic Kingdom many years ago because I thoroughly loved walking in/thru/around RoA area...but now....

...even here it's an imaginative exercise until I actually go, but between (what was formerly) Future World being universally-panned, and "adults still behaving badly" in World Showcase.....

*sigh*
