General Star Wars Discussion

The Phantom Meance is the best of the PT movies because it's a simple fun adventure film full of that George Lucas Magic
It's interesting that years ago people would have said the opposite.

Personally, I rank Revenge of the Sith as one of the top 3 SW movies of all time. It delivered on what everyone had wanted to see for 20 years. It had the jedi purge, the epic ObiWan/Anakin duel, the rise of the Empire and Palpatine, the birth of the twins and how they got to where they are in ANH, the beginning of the Death Star, and of course the rise of Vader. It had everything and was even a bit emotional. I rank it right under ANH and TESB.

The thing about the PT that may stand the test of time is that, while the dialogue was clunky and awkward at best, the story and narratives were actually very very good. The content and visuals were right on if the dialogue and direction were not. Same movie, different directors and more dialogue working and they would have been phenomenal. For now, they actually have aged pretty well.

As for the ST, I "make" them work for me. I wrote a story outline that fits in between TLJ and TROS that actually makes it work better. I my own head canon, I have an episode 8.5 that transitions the two movies nicely (at least in my mind). Oh, and I keep the fan-made scene where the ghosts of Jedi past help Rey at the end of TROS.

Dan Gilroy bagged an Emmy for writing on Andor…

Shout out to Genevieve OReilly in his acceptance…

Might be the first non technical/music award for anything Star Wars ever?

Maybe editing?

Right…mostly technical. I realized that after posting that they won editing…which gave marsha Lucas exactly one more Oscar than George.

Point being is story/directing/acting/etc was not there. I think Guinness had a best supporting nod?

He did. Nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He lost to Jason Roberts in Julia which was a pretty good movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was up for similar nominations. It lost best picture to Chariots of Fire. It's a little hard to win when you go up again the classics like that. Movies today just suck.

The 70s and 80s had amazing movies win Best Picture. But as you can see they are all mostly relationship, mafia and bio-pics. No scifi or fantasy. It's kind of a list of my favorite movies.
  • 1990 - "Driving Miss Daisy"
  • 1989 - "Rain Man"
  • 1988 - "The Last Emperor"
  • 1987 - "Platoon"
  • 1986 - "Out of Africa"
  • 1985 - "Amadeus"
  • 1984 - "Terms of Endearment"
  • 1983 - "Gandhi"
  • 1982 - "Chariots of Fire"
  • 1981 - "Ordinary People"
  • 1980 - "Kramer vs. Kramer"
  • 1979 - "The Deer Hunter"
  • 1978 - "Annie Hall"
  • 1977 - "Rocky"
  • 1976 - "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest"
  • 1975 - "The Godfather Part II"
  • 1974 - "The Sting"
  • 1973 - "The Godfather"
  • 1972 - "The French Connection"
  • 1971 - "Patton"

I happened upon a Forbes listing of profits from the world class Disney Star Wars movies today…

Here was the BO takeways:
The farce awakens: $500.2 mil
Outlier One: $268.4 mil
The last Johnson (thankfully): $324 mil
The rise of the sewage: $48.3 mil
Solo: -103.3

Can any statisticians out there make it make sense? Please use bright colors and few words so I can follow along 🙏🏻

My son showed me that. I didn't know TROS made less than Solo. It just show how TLJ killed the franchise. I really don't think The Gorgu movie will make a a bigger profit than TROS or even a profit at all.

Solo was a NEGATIVE…but it really doesn’t change the straight downward trend much

We shall call it “the gravity strategy”
