Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Reactions to Tron sound similar to Tron Uprising. A vert basic or generic story with the appeal being the visuals and the music.

Uprising also had the nostalgia factor, and seeing what a visually dated original might be like given advances in visual effects.

Uprising still holds up visually (de-aged Jeff Bridges notwithstanding), especially with the recent 4K upgrade, so this one may hold some appeal. Kind of like Avatar where you're going for the unique theater experience more than anything.
Do you mean Legacy? As Uprising was the animated series.

Right. I even googled it to make sure and still got it wrong :p
Lol, it happens.

I like Legacy, and Uprising was really good. And while Tron may never win any Oscars for screenwriting, the story doesn't need to be complicated. As long as the visuals are stunning and the music is good I think most will have a good time.

I see on Thursday in ScreenX.

I predict Tton will end up grossing what Legacy made…. As it seems to me if you see Tron…. People should see it in a theater with great sound and screen…. I am sure some will say it made less when factoring inflation…. But people do not also factor since Covid…. There are many people who just never went back to Cinemas….full stop…. So it is a mute point

I’m seeing it tomorrow in IMAX 3D as part of the Tron: Legacy/Tron: Ares IMAX 3D double feature.

I have seen some rumors going around that Badlands will be the first movie in the predator franchise to not be rated R…. But PG-13…. With some expressing disappointment…. Once I heard that my thoughts are of course why would it not be pg-13…. Everything that has been shown has been creatures and Robots… as long as it does not involve humans you can get away with a lot

There have been times I’ve been wishy-washy about a movie, but then went to see it.

I’m not bashing, but I have no interest in Tron. I was around when the first one came out, couldn’t get into it then; couldn’t get into it when the first sequel was made. I tried.

So I probably never saw the first one all the way through, and never saw any of the sequels. There’s nothing that could get me to the theater on this one.

Tron was right up my alley when it first came out. It was the perfect mix of video games and computers both I love. Legacy was all eye candy and no substance. ElecTRONica at DCA was amazing as well as the 20 minute sneak peak. Problem is the sneak peak was the best part of the movie.

Ares we will see on Friday but we are more interested in seeing 20th anniversary re-release of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride tomorrow night. That will be more fun and cheaper too.

Tron has been more of a niche film…The original Tron was a disappointment in its 1982 release….it has created a cult following over the years since… people talk about the disappointing critic ratings…. Well at 61% the original did not fare much better

I am sure there will be some who are quick to paint Ares as a flop…. But I find it hard to believe Disney would greenlit the next Tron sequel if their expectations were much higher then the last sequel theatrically

I checked the websites of the 3 big U.S. theater chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) tonight and their homepages' banners are busy hyping up...presales and merchandise previews for Wicked: For Good.

It's not that they aren't offering popcorn tins, etc. for Tron: Ares but they're not being placed front and center. I suspect that's a(nother) bad omen for the movie's prospects, along with the disgust on social media regarding Grok's tie-in, with their providing A.I. generated posters for the red carpet premiere. Disney's bungled marketing pushes before of course, but they seem to have been making all the wrong decisions with this one.

So you think they are buring it like they did Elio? Or is Disney marketing completely incompetent? Anything that has a little bit of noise from the Internet peanut gallery is immediately written off as a loss.

Funny, because the very first thing that pops up for me on AMC's site is an ad for Tron. As well as the very first ad in their banner is a giveaway for a Tron keychain.

As well as an ad for their popcorn bucket combo later in their banner -

And the other two have similar ads in their banners for Tron as well.

On Cinemark's they have a giveaways for a trip to WDW as their very first banner ad -

Regal's has the ad after Wicked, which makes since because Wicked is the bigger movie, but its still there.

So unless you didn't notice the ads or just skipped them its there on the three big chain's websites. And as you can see I'm not signed in to any of the sites, so its not target specifically to me. This is their regular banner ads for all users.

Now I'm not going to say this is going to equate to a good box office, just that they are advertising.

I checked Regal today and the current first banner ad up was for Roofman! (Tron: Ares is two clicks over.) Cinemark still shows me Wicked: For Good first. But yes, today (presumably since it's now playing) Tron: Ares has pride of place over at AMC. It still seems weird that the chains weren't pushing that movie more in advance, though. This is a kind of thin month for new wide releases.

I don't know where you are in the world or if you're even logged into the sites, but could it be possible that your view is different than others? Because mine still shows the same as I posted this morning, and again I'm not logged into any of the sites, and I have all 3 theater chains within a 30 miles radius of me.

Saw Tron: Ares on Thursday. While imperfect, it was actually quite a fun, entertaining movie. I’ll have to think on it for a bit, but I think I enjoyed it more than Legacy.

In terms of action movies I’ve seen this year, here’s how I’d rank them:

1) Fantastic Four
2) Thunderbolts*
3) Superman
4) Tron: Ares
5) Jurassic World: Rebirth
6) Captain America: Brave New World

I agree with your list, except I would switch Tron and Superman (liked Tron way more than Superman).

I've seen Tron twice now, once in Dolby 3d and once in regular Dolby. And I have to say that its a fun ride. Story is simple of course, like most stories coming out of Hollywood these days. But overall its adds to the lore and continues where Legacy left off minus Sam and Quora (but there is nods to both throughout the film and even a potential for a followup sequel that includes both) and is timely to where technology is today and leans into some of the fears surrounding it, but with a twist.

I would give it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10, not perfect but a good movie overall.

So far while critics don't seem to like it (par for the course on Tron movies) audiences seem to agree its good, we'll see if it holds and how the box office turns out -

In case @TP2000 is interested I’m at mickeys not so scary Halloween party and I’ve seen like 4 or 5 fantastic four costumes.

I love that! 😍 🤣😍

I'm regrouping this weekend before I head out on another goodwill ambassadorship assignment overseas tourist trip. But one thing I'm doing tomorrow is getting my candy stockpile purchased and ready as I come home just before Halloween.

I'll be ready for the waves of current popular culture to sweep over my front porch on the 31st!
