Trip Report Turns out birthdays CAN be magical

Now that I’m home and settled back into reality, I thought I’d get started on my second trip report. While having been to Disney World more frequetly than I can count, I’d only visited the original park three times; all of which were several years apart. As I mentioned in my pre-trip report, I relocated out west for work not long after mine and my niece’s WDW adventure last summer; and despite now living fairly close by, I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit Disneyland. With my last several birthdays having been rough to say the least, I thought I’d do something more low key and relaxing; and what better way to celebrate than with the fab five, and copious amounts of churros!

To recap:
Who: Me (D)
What: Solo birthday trip
When: Sunday 9.21 - Thursday 9.25
Where: Disneyland Resort and Disney California Adventure
Why: To break my birthday slump

Day One:
Since I wasn’t leaving the state, I decided to drive this time around (that, and I may still be a bit traumatized from missing the flight with S 😅). After taking an extra long walk with my dog, and then subsequently coaxing her off of my suitcase with peanut butter, I was ready to hit the road. The travel Gods must’ve been with me, because I managed to reach Anaheim in just about 90 minutes; which for late Sunday morning on the 5, is damn near miraculous. When visiting Disney World, I always stay on property; but with Disneyland, there are a large number of hotels within walking distance; a lot of which I can use points for, so I decided to go that route. This time around, I stayed at the Westin on W. Katella, and I’m very glad that I did. The property itself is quite sizable, with a gorgeous lobby, and is surprisingly reminiscent of Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando. Once I finished handing over the car to the valet, and having my bags loaded onto the luggage cart, I headed straight to the check in desk; hoping and praying that my room would be ready. Imagine my surprise when, while speaking to the lovely woman at the front desk, she informs me that my suite is indeed good to go…Thinking I’d heard her wrong, I asked that she double check to make sure that she was looking at the right reservation; as it turns out, the travel Gods weren’t yet done with the gifts, because the hotel decided to upgrade me for my birthday(and the status I've accrued with Marriott, thanks to the seemingly endless work trips)!

After offering multiple rounds of profuse gratitude, I headed upstairs to a beautiful multi room layout with a living room type space/kitchen/dining room/large bathroom (which comes in REAL handy when you’re as girly as I am, and travel with enough skin care, etc. to keep you comfortable for twice as long as you’d be out of your house), and bedroom with the softest king size bed I’ve ever felt; topped off with a view of Disney California Adventure. I’ll admit, it did feel kinda silly to have all of that space for one person; but I would quickly get over that once the park days began. I literally never remember to take room pics, so here are the ones from the hotel website, to give you an idea:

After making a quick grocery store run and getting settled in, I noticed that my lunch reservation was approaching; so after changing, I headed out to Downtown Disney (anyone wanna guess how many times I called it Disney Springs?). One of the many good things about SoCal is that while it remains warm for most of the year, it’s a forgiving dry heat; so the walk was not only enjoyable, but didn’t leave me covered in a layer of sweat by the time I reached my destination. As a native NYer, I tend to walk pretty fast, so what Google Maps estimated as a 15 minute walk to the gates took me less than 10. Having already built in extra time, I decided to take my time, and have a look around as I made my way to the Grand Californian. Originally, I was a bit nervous about potentially missing out on the 70th Anniversary decorations, since we all know how big they go for Halloween and Christmas. I was quite happy to see that they’d found a great way to marry the two; without one outshining the other.

After taking some photos for my nieces, I popped into World of Disney to find the merch they’d requested. A sweatshirt for S

and a Tigger plushie for her sister, I. The mobile checkout really is a godsent, because all three check out counters were mobbed; so after quickly showing my receipt to the CMs, I continued on; making it to the GC with five minutes to spare; and thankfully so, because I’d forgotten how spacious that resort is! When making dining reservations, I remembered really enjoying the Craftsman Bar from my previous stay, so I figured why not head back for lunch on arrival day. Since at this point, it was ~ 1:00 PM, the pool area was fairly empty; which made for a lovely time taking in the sights of the resort (even with construction going on). Disneyland, as I would come to learn, also does a great job of celebrating Dia de Los Muertos during this time of year; as such, the Craftsman was offering multiple food and drink options in celebration. I decided to go with the “Receurdame,” after the song from Coco

* Casamigos Reposado, Passion Fruit Syrup, Hibiscus Liqueur, and Lemon Juice*

When I say that drink was good, I mean it was GOOD! Light, refreshing, with just the right amount of kick to it; 10/10 highly recommend. While savoring this beauty, I chose the Sticky Chicken Wings for lunch, and man, was that a wise decision; lightly fried and covered in Gochujang Korean BBQ sauce, with a side of sticky rice. Everything about the meal was exactly what I wanted, and I devoured every bit.
1759423125654.png

After settling the bill, I noticed that there was quite a commotion coming from the bar; turns out the Rams/Commanders game was on, and as girly as I may be, I love football. I decided to sit and watch for a bit; getting to know a few of the other guests, and finishing another Recuerdame, before heading back towards Downtown Disney. Fun Fact- even if you are going to Downtown Disney, and not the parks themselves, you still have to go through security on your way out of the hotel. Which, when doing so at the exact same time that Oogie Boogie Bash (Disneyland’s Halloween Party) is about to start, will cost you close to 20 mins 😩.

Still a bit full from lunch, I explored the opposite end of Downtown Disney; stopping into a few shops before coming across some beautiful Mickey themed kitchenware. FaceTiming my significant other (C) to share in my joy, he convinced me to only get the coupe glasses (but as he would learn when I got home, the charcuterie board also found its way into my trunk 😉)

Right outside the HOME store was this beautiful Encanto floral installation; celebrating Colombian culture and heritage featuring Isabella on this end of DD, and Mirabelle towards the other. The photos truly don’t do justice to how lovely they were:

With a few hours until dinner, I took my time walking back to the hotel; enjoying the fact that Anaheim allows for not having to drive pretty much everywhere you go.

Day One Continued:

Many people tend to, understandably so, think of mostly Disneyland when they hear Anaheim. Over the last few years, however, the city is steadily becoming a burgeoning culinary, art, and music hotspot. While, of course, still small when compared to Chicago, New York, or L.A., it does have quite a bit to offer; so for dinner, I decided to exit the Disney bubble, and check out some local haunts. One in particular a friend of mine had been talking about, and seemed interesting to say the least; the Anaheim Packing District. Inside a refurbished citrus plant, the more upscale food hall is occupied by shopping vendors, bars, and food stalls with just about everything you could possibly imagine. On the lower level is a seemingly inconspicuous wall (it's right next to a sushi place); until you notice the unusual door handle shaped like a blindfolded rabbit. After checking in with the hostess, that wall becomes the entrance to an aptly named speakeasy, The Blind Rabbit.
1759515972621.png

*not my photo* *can you spot the rabbit?*

I was happy to see that the space was able to execute the concept; giving an early 1900s hidden underground vibe without being gimmicky about it. Intimate and dimly lit, you get the opportunity to relax and enjoy yourself; albeit only within the allotted 90 min timeframe. While they do offer a normal full bar, most of their cocktails are absinthe forward; but with a modern twist (straight pours of various types of absinthe were also offered, should one choose to be a purist).

*which of these walls do you think was the exit?*
1759516444110.jpeg

1759516511657.jpeg

I chose the "Love You Better," Absinthe, Mijenta Blanco Tequila, Fresh Pineapple and Lime Juices with a Black Cherry garnish. Most of their food options are small plates, and I went with the Duck Confit Mac and Cheese; both of which were great; the roux for the mac and cheese definitely need to be thicker, in my opinion; but the duck really saved it. Overall, I enjoyed TBR, and would definitely go back.

Despite the also tempting dessert menu, I debated between staying here or calling it an early night; since I planned to rope drop Disneyland Park the next morning. Since I'd heard that rope drop here can be especially cutthroat, heading back to the hotel ultimately won out. Once I got back to my room, I remembered that my hotel has a rooftop bar that prides itself on their up close and personal views of the DLR fireworks.

Fun Fact #2- fireworks in Disneyland can only happen on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night due to Anaheim City Noise Ordinances (unless Disney manages to get special dispensation from the city, like they did for a brief period over the summer; close to the actual date of the 70th).

Waffling between fireworks and Netflix, I text C to get his opinion. He reminded me that since it was Sunday, and would be my only opportunity to see them, I'd likely regret it if I didn't. I then gathered my last bit of energy, and took the elevator upstairs. Apparently, RISE (the name of the bar) is a popular spot for fireworks viewing; so I figured that I'd MAYBE have a shot, with it being just me. After speaking to the hostess, she graciously checked to see if they could accomodate; and she could! After asking for my name and phone number to text me when my space was ready, she informed me that I already had a reservation, and that it had been made back in August...

Knowing that both my first and last name are extremely common, I asked her to make sure that it was in fact me she was talking about. After confirming my phone number via text, she started gathering menus. Still confused, I asked her who made the reservation, because, again, it definitely wasn't me. Waiting for me at a table with direct views of Pixar Pier were a glass of champagne, and a note; as it turns out, C made the reservation, and set the whole thing up the month before.

Since I'd arrived a bit earlier (9:00) than the reservation was for (fireworks weren't for another 30 mins and he'd made the reservation for 9:15), I took my time enjoying the champagne, and decided on the Bananas Foster Tres Leches; which was hands down, one of the best desserts I've had in a very long time. That and the "Peach Please" cocktail I ordered arrived just as the fireworks were starting; serving as a pretty perfect ending to a great day...

*Maestro Dobel Reposado Cristalino Tequila, Peach Purée, Aperol, Lemon Juice, Honey Syrup*
1759518721302.jpeg

...right before they brought out the complimentary birthday dessert; that, between dinner, champagne, tequila, and the heavy-ish dessert I'd just finished, almost made my stomach start a protest. After blowing out the candle (thank goodness they 86'd the singing), I asked for it to be boxed up, so I could enjoy it in my room.
1759518904807.jpeg

Once I got back downstairs, I got everything set up for my first day at the parks, sat on the couch to watch a few episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" on Netflix, and somehow found room for my mini birthday cake slice. Not a bad start, if I do say so myself.

Day Two
I've always had this rule since graduating college that I absolutely refuse to go to work on my birthday. As stressful as the day can sometimes turn out to be, I'd rather be stressed and somewhere I enjoy, than either in the office or stuck on a Zoom call. Which, normally means that I sleep in; but that was not to happen today. After getting over the strange sensation of not only being awake at 5:00 AM, but voluntarily so, on my birthday, I decided to take my time getting ready; enjoying a small room service breakfast from the balcony.

Rope drop in Disneyland works a bit differently than most of us are used to. Out here, it's limited to one of the two parks per day, and each park always has the same schedule; M, W, F, Su gets you into Disney California Adventure thirty mins early; as where T, Th, and S are for Disneyland proper. A piece of advice I'd been given from locals was to try to avoid rope dropping the park with EE on any given day; because the hotel guests will have either built a queue, or are already waiting at the queue for the park's most popular ride(s). With that in mind, and it being a Monday, I went for Disneyland. Originally, my plan was to be out the door by 6:45 AM; but my being hypervigilant about keeping myself relaxed on this day got the better of me. By the time I triple checked that I had everything that I'd need, and finished returning some phone calls from family back east, it was 7:10! Normally, this would've annoyed me, but I decided to let it roll off my back, and simply walk a tiny bit faster; ultimately arriving at the esplanade (the area between the entrances to both parks) at just before 7:30.

Once I took a look around, I couldn't help but giggle to myself. While there were indeed people waiting, security hadn't even opened the turnstiles; and I could easily count the number of people waiting in each section. I couldn't help but laugh that had I gotten here when I wanted to, I would've been twiddling my thumbs for a good 20 mins. Another difference between here and Florida is that once you scan your ticket, they also take your picture on your first park day; and it then shows up each time you enter. To say that my ticket photo was...interesting would be an understatement. I truly didn't know it was coming, so when the CM told me to look, I was...shall we say, a bit confused. You also cannot activate your Lightning Lane in Disneyland until you physically scan and enter the park you'd previously chosen.

Fun Fact #3- DLR still requires park reservations, and while park hopping is allowed, you can't do so until 11:00 AM.

When I originally purchased my tickets, I was able to buy LLMP at that time; so simply selecting the one I wanted made the process a bit easier. Because of it's size, DL has much fewer LLMP options that Magic Kingdom (simply no space to add a LL entrance); so after snagging Indiana Jones (the west coast version of Dinosaur, and what I believe FL will be getting in its place, once Tropical Americas is built), I waited in the group of people that were also Fantasyland bound. Much like Florida, Peter Pan is VERY popular here; and because there's no LL option, is often the ride that people make a beeline for. Thankfully, that was not my plan. Having not been here in three years, I took my time making my way down Main St., and really letting myself get caught up in my surroundings. As expected, the Halloween decorations were in full effect (still with some 70th anniversary touches), and at this point, it really hit how lucky I was to be here. I believe @Tuvalu also mentioned in her DLR trip report that the west coast castle is quite small compared to Magic Kingdom's; so it definitely felt a bit weird not having it be the overarching presence, as soon as you get in.

While certainly not funny, it was definitely interesting to see the number of people pushing their strollers back and forth; reminding me of race cars idling while waiting for the flag to be dropped. This one woman in particular kept clipping someone in front of them in the Achilles tendons; and despite being asked to stop numerous time, couldn't have cared less. Not wanting to spend my trip with a limp, I stayed as close to the curb as possible; as more and more people arrived with looks of pure determination and bordering on ruthlessness. Once that rope dropped, it was mayhem personified; if you've ever seen opening at a Black Friday sale, you know exactly what I mean.

Black Friday Shopping GIF by NBC

Wanting absolutely no part of that, I happily let some more eager guests walk in front me; as they all ran like mad to Peter Pan's Flight...only to find that it wasn't open yet. For the happiest place on earth, there were quite a few expletives being tossed at the poor CMs that had to deliver the news; one girl barely looked 18, and was clearly on the brink of tears. Once people started to disperse, I approached to ask if she was okay; she said she was, but I put my hand on her shoulder, and told her that obviously, none of that was on here, and that she was doing a great job. I noted the info on her CM tag, and gave her a cast compliment later in the day.

While others scrambled around, I happily took my time walking over to my first ride of the day; Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. This one, when still in FL, was always a favorite of mine and my Nana's; so I make it a point to ride it every time I'm in Disneyland. Besides, what better way to kick off ones birthday than with a quick trip to hell?
1759591885147.jpeg

1759591935300.jpeg

There was literally no wait to hang out with J. Thaddeus Toad, Esquire, so after this, I walked over to Snow White's Scary Adventure (LOVE that it still has the original name); which was also a walk on, allowing me to take my time observing and snapping pics of the queue...right until I got to the loading area, and it shut down😩.
1759594277454.jpeg

According to the CM, it would only be about 10 mins. or so; and since I wasn't in a rush, I decided to wait it out. Originally, I'd planned to skip Peter Pan this time around, since the line is pretty much insanity from park open to park close; but with it not having opened on time, I thought I'd keep an eye on it. About halfway through my Snow White wait, I noticed that they'd begun running test cars for PP. Thankfully, it only took 8 minutes total for SNSA to come back up; and after being jump scared by the Evil Queen, I went to speak to the Peter Pan CM. Just my luck, he said they'd be opening in a couple minutes, and to stay right there to be first in queue. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, he let me in, and started to adjust the numbers on the wait time sign. They must've also started to update the app, because by the time I was loading my boat, I saw what looked like a literal sea of people, coming from every which way, converge on that line like they were giving something away for free!
Angry Black Friday GIF by Buyout Footage

By the time I returned from Neverland, the wait time had reached 70 mins. For my own amusement, I checked the wait time for Rise of the Resistance (which is in Disneyland proper here); and that wait was only 45!

From here, I checked out the mildly traumatizing story of Pinocchio(that one still baffles me as a children's story/ride); and then attended the Mad Hatter's gathering. While pondering whether it was weird to attend a "Merry UnBirthday" party on ones actual birthday, I made a note to ride again at some point during the trip, but at night.
1759596776277.jpeg

Disneyland tends to have A LOT more roaming characters than WDW, so it was very cool to exit the teacups, and see Pinocchio walking down the lane! He waved hello, and upon noticing my birthday celebration button, gave me a great big hug. He also noticed a little girl trying to get his attention, so after waving goodbye to me, he took her hand and continued walking; with her mom and his handler in tow; a pretty sweet encounter overall.
1759596998314.jpeg

With a few rides under my belt in less than an hour, I decided it was time for the first of many special treats; and my personal favorite, a churro!
1759597095341.jpeg

*we won't be discussing exactly how many of these I ate throughout my trip🤣*

I don't know what it is, but the churros at Disneyland just hit different than the ones in Florida; so I took my time enjoying this, while checking the wait times to plot my next move. I noticed that Haunted Mansion had the ever wanted 13 mins posted, so I walked the short distance to visit 999 happy haunts... only to find that it had shut down in the less than 5 mins my walk took.
1759597660538.jpeg

*I call this photo "Cast Member annoyed at having just repeated himself 999 times."*

As you'll notice, Haunted Mansion gets a Nightmare Before Christmas makeover between September and early January; celebrating Jack Skellington's adventures through Halloween Town and Christmas Town. Understandably, it draws a big crowd, and even longer lines; so I decided to snag a LL for it, after checking into my first. With no estimate of how long the shut down would be, I decided to keep moving through New Orleans Square. Disneyland decided to do away with the Pirates of the Caribbean LL option; and with the line looking pretty steep (pretty sure people who were also heading to Haunted Mansion pivoted to Pirates, since they're so close together), I took advantage the five minute early allowance for LL. Crossing over to Adventureland and not seeing a spring roll cart was a bit sad; and after taking a moment to grieve, I met up with Indiana Jones. Everything about this experience, from the detailed queue to the ride itself is top notch. Everyone on my jeep was having an amazing time...until it shut down halfway through and the lights came on...

Oh Come On GIF

When a cast member approached, we all just knew that it was evacuation time; however, she let us know that we'd be kept in the vehicles for ~ 10 mins, and then brought to the beginning to ride all over again. After the kid next to me and I high fived, we all patiently waited for only about 6 mins, before we fast forward through the ride; and wound up back at the loading dock. All hands shot up when asked who wanted to ride again; and this time, we made it, snakes and all!

Day Two Cont'd:

Upon exiting Indy, I noticed yet another of my favorite snack carts; popcorn! Unlike WDW, Disneyland, while still offering the buckets, does not offer discounted refills;

Disapprove The Tonight Show GIF

but they do have these adorable helpers called "Roastie Toasties." Some carts that are near rides even have themed RTs (Haunted Mansion's is usually a grave digger, but Oogie Boogie during this time of year); so made sure to take note of which ones I saw whenever I stop for a popcorn fix. My Haunted Mansion Holiday LL was steadfastly approaching, so I enjoyed my beloved snack while backtracking to New Orleans Square. As luck would have it, Pirates was listed at 10 mins, so I decided to seize the opportunity. I've said it once, and I'll say it again, PoTC in Disneyland is just better. Full stop. The ride itself is longer, the details are spectacular, and the drops both give you a thrill. It's worth the standby queue, and you leave with such a smile each time.

After crossing my fingers the whole way over the bridge, I was happy to see that Haunted Mansion Holiday was indeed up and running! With the queue not being too crowded, I was able to really enjoy both the original facade, as well as the additions.
1759600900469.jpeg

From what I've heard, the changes tend to be most popular with visitors, and not so much with locals; but with Jack being one of my favorite characters, I really enjoyed seeing him, Sally, Oogie, and the crew take over the manor for a bit. After waving goodbye, I decided to slow down a bit, and take in more of the sights; while slowly making my way to ToonTown. I particularly enjoyed seeing the hand carved pumpkins at the base of the "Partners" statue.

Once I realized just how much I'd underestimated the walk from the Hub to ToonTown, I made a note to take the train back, while ironically heading to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. While the ride itself is identical to the one in FL, the queue is NOT; and I have to say, it blows WDW's out of the water. In CA, the ride takes place in an old school movie theater, with the most adorable posters and props related to everyone's favorite couple. I really was blown away, and found myself grinning from ear to ear.

*I couldn't resist taking this one, given the day*
1759601674983.jpeg

*I found this one especially endearing, and immediately sent it to S (who then shared it with her sister)*

After taking a crazy ride through Runamuck Park, I spent a few minutes checking out ToonTown, since WDW no longer has one. Since it was lunchtime, I took a look at the wait times and current LL offerings for California Adventure. Since the one I most had my eye didn't start allowing selections until 3, I decided to relax and enjoy the train ride, while slowly making my way out of the park; stopping halfway up Main St. to take a minute to realize that for the first time in several years, the only emotions I felt thus far on my birthday were happiness and pure joy.
