Pretty good deal…with the cap going up.

Hopefully his body holds up. $8 mil for a 50 point guy needs to not have too much of a production dip

Yeah, that's the part that's lost with him. People are obsessed with him right now, but he's never been that good outside of these playoffs, so he doesn't have room to fall much. The Marchand and Eckblad contracts are absolute disasters though.

I don't know, my interest in the league has been falling recently. I'm so sick of hearing about taxes like it's much of anything, and the media won't lay off it cause God forbid anyone doesn't want to play for the most toxic franchise in sports in Toronto.

Cup winners always overpay to keep the band together…and it always falls in on itself

The nature of the beast. Cost of doing business.

Having watched every second of that twice (I’m lucky…91-93 and 16-18)…pretty sure how this one will work out too.

Just too much to ask.

Welcome to overpayment season!!

My god…mitchy has 221 goals in 9 years and the casinos are gonna pay him $12 per

You do the math on that…
Yeah, but he's not a goal guy, he's a setup guy. He's like 4th all time on the Maple Leafs in assists, and the highest ppg player. And that doesn't include how good he is defensively. Overpayment is the INSANE deal Provorov just got. I swear, Columbus can change GMs all they want, but they always end up with the worst free agent deals on July 1.

They’re all overpaid on 7/1

But yeah…that provorov deal shocked me too

Sweet Jesus nhl GMs are really dumb. They basically prove that post concussion syndrome is debilitating day in and out

And by the way…it’s the leafs…don’t be too impressed. But at least now mitchy gets both sides of the “American two headed monster” with eichel 😎

I hate Vegas, but just to watch the Toronto meltdown, I'm alright with them next year.

But yeah, the fact that Nick Perbix might be the best available Dman left and Roslovic may be the best Center, YIKES.

Teams generally speaking don’t let quality players hit the market

Really in any sport

Most hockey people I’ve talked to here in Vegas feel like we got a deal, guarantee a couple of teams would have happily paid him $14m a year had he gone to free agency.

We knew we didn’t have the team last year to take out Edmonton and advance, now we should. All I know is I like our odds of winning another Cup in the next 5 years a whole lot better today than a did a week ago.

Edmonton should have been swept by Florida…just saying

For 35+ years…the western (Campbell) conference has been the most overrated year in and out of any pro sport conference

Just saying

That Kaprizov contract is absolutely insane. I mean, I was legit going to give the benefit of the doubt til I ran numbers and saw it's legit more a percent of the salary cap at signing than even McDavid.

Personally I think that’s a bad deal…but we’ll see

Lots of fireworks over the next year with McJesus going to auction
It's really bad. He's 17.5% of the cap this year. McDavid when he signed last was 15%. Mathews was also like 15%, and MacKinnon was like 12 or 13%. Kucherov like 11%.

McDavid I keep thinking back to the report that he wanted to go to a team that started with "T" and it wasn't Toronto. A line of McDavid/Kucherov/Point is the most insane thing I've heard.

Really i never understand why there isn’t a line of pro athletes starting at the orange stand on the I-95 welcome center waiting to get in?

Why wouldn’t you want a spot in the sun in a tax shelter?

I was shocked at the dollar amount also, his points per game is one of the top in the league but he’s very injury prone.

If he can stay healthy and maintain his PPG it’s going to age well, if he misses 20+ games a year and his stats diminish as he ages this has the potential to join the “worst NHL contracts ever” list.

Had they settled on $12-14 million a year with his stats I think most people would still find it high, but reasonable, $3 million a year more than Draisatl is absolutely insane though.

Has me worried about what McDavid, Eichel, etc are going to cost when their contracts are up after this season.

Cause they pay a ton of accountants to make sure it's not a big deal. Austin Mathews pays less taxes than anyone on the Panthers does because he takes all his money as a signing bonus in AZ. I'll bet money Kaprizov has a condo somewhere that all his money is going to as well (he's all signing bonus). And sponsors/owners make up more money. When Toronto was trying to sign Stamkos, they had their top 5 sponsors meet with him and guarantee to at least double his salary every year with endorsements.
