Yeah.

They must have meant Avatar... I can imagine we don't see Avatar truly unlocked until the structure is done?
We do know that the Backlot is closing in 2026 with Monsters right? Avatar's construction likely depends on the new bus loops opening at the new parking structure, but they might be able to start construction before the new structure opens in the Backlot section

This quote from the article feels like a misprint:

“Mazloum also shared that the recently announced parking structure (with approximately 6,000 parking spaces!) and transportation hub will "unlock" DisneylandForward and will start paving the way for Coco's attraction as soon as the garage is finished.“

They must have meant avatar? I can’t imagine the structure has any impact on coco?

My first impression was also that this surely means Avatar, but after thinking about it for a bit I had some thoughts (caveat, project management background but not theme parks):

if we assume that the recent permits filed (images from the HeyBrickey on it) for reclaiming some of that landscaped land are correct, then there may be a few services or access points back there that DCA relies on that may be interrupted by the construction walls.

I'd bet there's plans to get temporary or longer term fixes for this that may involve moving some of those backstage services or police/fire egress/access points to the avengers campus hollywood backlot side, at least for the construction period, and it could be that some of these plans are dependent on the transportation hub getting opened up.

So anyway that's my devil's advocate take on how Coco might be linked to the bus loop. I think more likely it might be shorter term construction or emergency fire lane access which would be relatively quick compared to building out the full parking structure.

Then somewhere along the way in Disney's internal game of telephone it became slightly misstated

I think its funny that Giacchino doesn't know what the Sonic Screwdriver is. Like what kind of pop culture nerd are you if you don't know what one is, I mean he has only composed stuff for some of the biggest nerd franchises of all time. You'd think he have some nerd cred to him, guess not.

Take away his nerd card.

I barely know, and that's only because it's brief blip with millennials a decade ago. I've still never seen an episode.

Take away your nerd card then too ;)

But seriously as least you know what it is, Giacchino should as he has been at the intersection of nerd culture for the past 20+ years. You'd think he would have picked up on a few things over the years. I mean that would be like him saying he doesn't know what any of the Infinity Stones are. Especially since he has worked with people who are literally in Doctor Who like Karen Gillan and Christopher Eccleston and quite a few others.

I tend to notice, with folks involved in the film industry, they don't consume a lot of film and television. I know many industry people who haven't seen a single Star Wars property nor know anything about it.

Doctor Who is so niche, I'm not surprised. Especially for an older person in the industry.

Its an older reference than millennials, so don't feel bad if you don't know it. But if you count yourself as being part of the nerd culture then you should know its reference.

When does something become mandatory knowledge for nerd culture? Magic is nerdy, yet I bet most nerds I know couldn't name a dozen working magicians.

Amd this attitude is why I never watched Doctor Who .The fans are a bit insufferable and think everyone needs to know and appreciate the dorky little show they enjoy. The Joss Whedon fans all seem to have found their new home in the cult of Who.

There are different levels of nerddom. Performing magic is on one end of the spectrum and being a Whovian is on a different end.

Also this wasn’t that serious, there is no attitude, so maybe take it down a notch there.

It’s not that niche anymore, this isn’t the 80s and 90s when it was only playing in PBS in the US, all one has to do is look at the floor of Comic-con and one can see Whovians all over the place, which is why it was even brought up in relation to Giacchino in the first place.

It's still pretty niche. It would be like me saying "Exit Pursued By Bear" and a nerd not getting it and me saying "wow, you never heard of Shakespeare???!!! Most famous author in the English language??? And you call yourself a fan of writing!"

Plus, Giacchino is nearly 60. The 80's and 90's is when he would have been most likely exposed to it. Do you think billionaire songwriters sit around and watch junk TV? Sure, some do. But most are working and using their free time for non-industry related activities. I'm sure a lot of older industry people would look at you oddly if you asked them was the tesseract is. Even if they know "Marvel" and the idea of the superhero flicks.

Heck, if I had a dollar for the amount of times that I've heard Disney fans mispronounce Autopia as Auto-topia or couldn't tell me anything about Mr. Toad other than the ride; I'd have enough for another trip to New York.
