To Knott or Not?

Taking my very large family on a road trip to California in a couple of weeks. Last time we were at Disneyland it just seemed like so much headache for such a high price. Not planning on going back there for a few years. Was originally thinking about doing Universal on this trip since I haven’t seen it in many decades, but prices aren’t much better.

My kids have spent a lot of time at the Texas Six Flags parks and they enjoy that kind of thing. I haven’t been to Knotts in 40 years, is it worth visiting? The website says it’s around $65 a person. That’s amazing compared to DL and Uni. Is it worth it?

It is definitely worth it. There is so much history to the park. Make sure to visit Sad Eye Joe in the jail. Tell the guy at the hotel window your kids names and Sad Eye Joe will address the kids by name. Summer Nights is going on now with live rock music and free games for the kids. The log ride and mine train are classics and older than Splash Mountain & the Haunted Mansion. Check out Mrs. Knotts for chicken dinner.

Only if you pay for fast passes. But then it’s not $65 pp anymore.

As said above, if your kids already have Six Flags passes, those will now get them into Knott's and get parking taken care of as well.

It's a cool place with some cool things to recommend for it, like the overall atmosphere of Ghost Town, the Calico Mine Ride and Log Ride-and you can easily tie those in by getting the kids to look for similarities between those and the Disney rides they experience later. Ghost Town Alive can be a lot of fun if your kids get into it. I really like the park's atmosphere, even if the well-themed and Six Flags-y bits clash.

The big frustrations deal with logistics and ops. Their ops are awful, especially for Ghostrider, which is easily their best coaster and is mobbed basically from minute one thanks to bad ops, high popularity, and being right next to the entrance. I always get Fastlane for Knott's because of how bad their ops are. Finally, their parking situation leaves a lot to be desired, as there are many lots you might be sent to, and the entire process is poorly explained and there aren't nearly enough employees or signs to help you figure out where to go. The park layout isn't super complicated but also isn't always the most intuitive thing in the world, and there are no more paper maps.

There are definitely a lot of merits to Knott's, but there are also things about it that can be frustrating. If you think they'd go for the hybrid coaster/theme park atmosphere, though, may as well check it out.

Best log ride on Earth. That, plus Calico Mine and the rest of Ghost Town make Knott’s absolutely worth doing. And thrill-lovers will find plenty to make them happy.
