News Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge - Historical Construction/Impressions

Personally I love the three transitions from DL proper to Galaxy's Edge and think it was designed well to blend in with DL.

However, I agree that it's too empty compared to the rest of the park. Disneyland is known for maximizing its space and using every nook and cranny to bring the park to life. This land just feels lifeless in comparison.

It needs another 2-3 attractions and I fear that they dug their own grave when designing this land with little to no space to add anything new, especially at DL.

Star wars is fine, but the way they designed Galaxy's edge doesn't fit inside Disneyland. It's too open, too empty
It’s very well constructed…and I don’t hate some of the choices…

But it suffers heavily from non-commitment to ip…terrible IP that they DID commit too…and as always with Disney: a misunderstanding of the appeal of Star Wars in the first place.

What does it say that Jedi training academy was more popular…as smiles on the faces of people participating and watching…than anything in a billion dollar land?

GE is great, but they really thought the lightsaber workshop would count in people's minds as an attraction (like Olivanders) and if you don't drink, you really don't have any reason to go in the Cantina.

While I agree it needs another attraction (how hard would an omnimovier Babu Frik's Shooting Gallery be?) I'm generally very pleased with it as is. There are other lands in much greater need of attention.

I think “great” in this case is a highly flexible moniker…

More attractions would involve leaning into the first 3 movies Bob can’t tell himself he was the “architect” of…
…and would not contribute to creating faux necessity to sell lineskips

It seems clear both are deal breakers

I haven’t stepped foot in the cantina since 2019. Kids and the seating arrangement over there make sure of that.

I used to be opposed to star wars coming to Disneyland. Now I feel entirely different. It fits Disneyland well. I think it needs more attractions though.

It’s funny because the very real concern, immediately before opening from a number of posters, was that you wouldn’t be able to walk because it was so small. We lose site of the good and the bad of that scaling mismatch.

I love New Orleans stretch for that space optimization, but it’s often very unpleasant to navigate.

A low hanging fruit would be an actual *fun* game for the land with moving prop additions. Ala SNW or Potter. That in and of itself would add a lot more life. It would require some money, but the least of expenses.

I think what you’re trying to say is…”they pooched it”

It’s still lifeless and rather empty going on a decade later. I don’t think it’s an outlier or anomaly at this point.

Would it had killed them to make the droids move a little? They created a soundtrack for the land and ignored it. They have background music in every other land. Why not in GE where it is an essential part of the experience.

My guess is because they actually have no clue what “galaxies edge” is supposed to be?

There were all kinds of videos snippets and glossy photos with blurbs put out in fan material places as they built it…but as I recall After reading the initial reaction was always “huh?”

But I’m pretty unfamiliar with Star Wars…so it probably just was too deep for me to comprehend?

Reminds me of a class I was in. The teacher tried to make as Doctor Who reference regarding the Tardis being larger on the inside. He failed because he had no idea what he was referencing. He never saw the show or knew anything about it. He was just referencing something he heard on a podcast. He ended up belittling the show.

Partly, but the other part is that the scale is dramatically different than Disneyland core. It can handle significantly more guests in its walkways that are much wider than the rest of the park. It just doesn’t seem as obvious because the whole scale adjusts.

Also no disagreement, it still remains more lifeless than what we were pitched.

No matter what, Galaxy's Edge was worth it for Rise of the Resistance, one of the greatest theme park attractions ever built. Would I have preferred Discovery Bay? Yeah probably. And I agree with the consensus regarding dead space, lack of kinetic energy, Smuggler's Run being a disappointment, etc. But as long as Disney/WDI is open to tweaking and expanding Galaxy's Edge, I don't see its existing shortcomings as impossible to overcome. And again, we got Rise out of it, a phenomenal addition to Disneyland's already-stacked lineup of E-tickets.

Do we know the extent to which expansion plots are available? IMO ideally they could put something low-key/indoor/hidden (to preserve the sensibility of resistance forest) in plot 1 (Dagobah System boat ride a la Navi River Journey?), something kinetic in plot 2 (flat ride? outdoor track ride a la Tokyo DisneySea's Tinkerbell's Busy Buggies?), and a large outdoor attraction in plot 3 (Luke & Leia's Magical Creatures Speeder Bike Adventure?). But who knows if these spaces are actually workable.
