With the first round complete, Visions Fantastic is off to a great start with three completely different hard ticket events, though all three take place at the Universal Orlando Resort. We had some truly interesting concepts thrown around during the brainstorming but I'm very happy with the three final products both in how distinct they are and in how creative they are. This is going to be a very difficult project to judge and as a solo judge especially because ultimately it's up to me and I can't bounce it off others to break ties. Either way, let's jump into the reviews!

Team Dream- Universal HoliNights
So of the three projects, Team Dream had probably the most obvious finalized product with a Christmas event for Islands of Adventure. IoA already has a huge holiday presence with Grinchmas so expanding that into a special hard ticket event makes a ton of sense and also lets the rest of the park get into the fun of it without damaging the theming for daily visitors who may not want to be inundated with holiday cheer. The whole team worked very well here with everybody contributing something really special and interesting within their own interest level.

To start off with the presentation, @Mr. Sullivan absolutely killed it here with the design of the website yet done on a Google Slides. I'm pretty terrible with presentation design and I usually resort to the same old same old so whenever someone takes one of these more standard styles of presentation and plusses it up, I have to give credit where it's due. You all could have easily just put together a Google site or a Google Slide but instead you did something different with it and I really appreciate that. It's easy to follow, I don't have to click around and backtrack, it's just the perfect presentation style and of the three presentations, I do think it was the best.

Where this project kind of fell, for me, was in the different lands you all focused on. While the two lands of Toon Lagoon (put together by @Disgruntled Walt) and Seuss Landing (put together by @Brer Panther) were huge standouts, I found the rest of them ended up really same-y by the end of it. It became a lot of "and this character is wearing a Santa hat" and "and this character has a Christmas sweater on" where I think different things could have been done with them. I understand that maybe Marvel and Jurassic Park don't lend themselves to Christmas as well as something like Seuss Landing does, but I would've appreciated a bit more uniqueness or it be left alone than these very simple overlays that feel less like you wanted to do them and more like you felt you had to.

Getting into the lands themselves, Port of Entry fits the opening land overlay vibes that I'd expect, with basic garlands and Christmas trees. I can't say anything here really stood out to me as especially unique or crucial, but it was simple and for an opening land, simple can absolutely be the way to go. Adding special food and merch offerings as well as small details like wrapping paper and animal carvings fit the land's aesthetic and fit the vibes of an event while also being thematic elements that can stay up during the day making this event pretty easy to put up each year. While not the stand out of the project, I think the simplicity easing us into the project works very well.

Seuss Landing kind of had the opposite of simple as I don't think there's anything simple about the works of Dr. Seuss. Still, this land is already decked out for Grinchmas, so taking that into account I was both surprised and impressed by the amount of stuff @Brer Panther was able to insert into this land that plussed it up beyond how much is already present. The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley update with the sneetches sequel story is certainly a really fun element, though it does feel very similar to the story of The Grinch and while I totally appreciate the idea of doing something original and not just making this a Grinch overlay, I almost wonder if that would've been the way to go due to the similarities. The Cat in the Hat show sounds very fun and the food and shopping additions are also great, rounding out this into the place to be for the holiday season. I imagine The Grinch remains a meet and greet at night due to how insanely popular he is during the day, but I do think a bit of discussion of that would've really rounded this well.

I don't have a ton to say about The Lost Continent other than wow a Christmas market fits that area really well and I love the idea. I love a good Christmas market and while I can imagine it being complicated to haul your bags of ornaments and wreaths around while also going on attractions and to shows, I also did see the scalpers with their bags of Figment popcorn buckets so maybe it's easier than I'm giving it credit for. This was a really simple addition but something that made this super unique and it may actually be my favorite addition in the whole project.

Hogsmeade was the land I was most anticipating because while I am absolutely not a Harry Potter fan, I do know that the property has its ties to Christmas and I was hoping we'd get some really fun Christmas stuff for the land and I was not disappointed. While you mostly added streetmosphere, thematic elements, and some new butterbeer flavors, they felt very "Harry Potter" in their delivery and I can appreciate the great holiday theming of the land, brought about especially by the projection show on Hogwarts Castle.

Jurassic Park and Marvel Superhero Island were the two lands I had the most problem with because, as previously mentioned, they kind of felt exactly the same with the overlays that I almost feel would've been better to have not added anything to them. I think there's a lot that can be done with Jurassic Park by making it more kitschy like the park is throwing a holiday overlay themselves but are very commercial about it rather than sticking some hats on dinosaurs and calling it a day (I do like the ty-rein-osaurus though). Marvel felt almost more egregious because you added some really interesting stuff (the dining options, the Christmas tree with ornaments) it felt like most of what you had was characters in new costumes including in the Spider-Man ride. None of this is bad and it's (the word of the project) simple which has it's own charm, I just wish we could've seen more creativity in these two lands.

Toon Lagoon was my favorite piece of the project from a land design perspective. Having the Rankin/Bass characters taking over Toon Lagoon was a wonderful decision and doesn't overstep on popular IP like if you had done this to Jurassic or Marvel. My biggest concern ends up being the ride overlays as, especially Rudolph, it feels very complicated to set up for the night, so are these full time overlays or just for the event? Either way, they both seem very fun and having Rudolph and an Island of Misfit Toys attraction makes a lot of sense as well. I adore the Miser Brothers so having them as walk around characters is a blast, and while the idea of a Wendy's sponsored Frosty cart is novel and I don't know how realistic, it's still a cute bit of theming that I liked a lot.

For the parade and nighttime spectacular; both were, again, simple, and while I think they absolutely fit the project very well, I would've liked a bit more detail in either of them, especially some custom art showcasing the parade floats would've added a ton. In fact, the lack of custom art throughout this whole project was really disappointing to me, even lacking a custom map with the locations of the events. We have some really talented artists on this team and so the fact that not one piece of original art (besides the webpage first slide) was done was really disappointing.

Overall, the word of this project was "simple" and I don't mean that in a negative way. Simplicity is sometimes the best way to go and there's not always a need for massive over-the-top overlays for something as well-known as Christmas. Sometimes all you need is some characters, some treats, and some pretty lights and that'll do, so I think ultimately while there were some things I wish could've been baked a little longer, this is still a great first project and with a team of a lot of newcomers, you should all be very proud!

Team Wonder- Late Night with NBC

If the word of the last project was "Simple" I think I'd have to say the word of Team Wonder's project is "Indulgent" because you all absolutely indulged your fandom and interest in certain NBC projects in the best possible way. In opposition to the Christmas overlay of Islands of Adventure, Team Wonder turned Universal Studios Florida into a playland for some of the most iconic pieces of television history and I can absolutely appreciate that as a wonderful idea. There's so much here I have to get through so let's not waste any more time.

To kick it off, I'm so glad you guys provided a map here! Maps make a huge difference in placemaking, especially for people who aren't as familiar with the park's layout. I've not been to Universal since before Jimmy Fallon opened (I know, I gotta rectify that to hit all the new stuff) but that means I'm not really familiar with where everything is within the park and so this map both helps me know where everything is in reference to one another but also where each new addition would be spread throughout the park.

So starting off, Race Through New York getting an overlay starring Conan is an incredibly indulgent @TheOriginalTiki idea filled to the brim with references that I totally do not get, but it's one of those things where enough was done here to make it all make sense that I don't need to be familiar with the property to fully understand. You kept the ride itself straightforward with a really simple overlay that adds a very Conan-style of humor to it and that's a huge plus. This would be an incredibly unique overlay as well as one that would be really easy to implement and I can imagine would be really popular both for fans of late-night as well as theme park fans who hate the Jimmy Fallon experience and are looking for something unique. This is easily one of the most fascinating and fun additions to any of the three projects and honestly I wouldn't mind seeing it just straight up replace Fallon in real life. Great work.

Twisted Metal is an interesting pick here because it's one of those shows that has its own niche and I certainly know people who are really into it, but at the same time I've never once seen a single piece of media in relation to it. I have no frame of reference for how popular it is nor if this even makes sense as an attraction, but I do really appreciate the way you guys focused on Uni's myriad of screen-based attractions to do your overlays with because they can easily be switched over much more than a dark ride or something like that can. I do whish there was a bit more detail here because I would've appreciated any more info you could give, but I understand this team had A LOT going on and so some things were going to fall by the wayside.

The Tribute Store being dedicated to SNL makes a TON of sense and the fact that this could be done lends credence to some sort of NBC takeover in real life that would be amazing. Honestly I could see a whole SNL fan fest night or something down the line and this just shows how well it would work. You guys are also the only team to include a Tribute Store so there's commendations I have to give.

Now as a Community superfan, the Community paintball game is streets ahead! Tying it into the movie that we'll still probably never get despite Joel McHale swearing we will is hilarious and I love the elements tying it in to the show. Having the cast shoot a real promotional paintball game there would be amazing and I'd buy a ticket solely to watch that alone. I also appreciate that this isn't actually paintball, that's a neat little touch that you didn't necessarily have to do but using gel balls instead is a very realistic touch that I appreciate. All in all, this is certainly cool... cool cool.

The entertainment is all really great as well. The live wrestling and Jimmy Fallon recordings are really fun additions that I can see people really enjoying, though the wrestling stuff especially brings up an issue that I may have missed so correct me if I'm wrong, but you guys didn't really give a timeframe when these events are supposed to be. It's not a killing blow or anything, but some info about dates or general timeframe would've really added to the realism and made the wrestling and Fallon stuff feel more realistic. Also, the fact these events only happen on certain days has me wonder if they are advertised on certain nights of the event or if the event is only one night where these events happen? I just feel it'd suck to buy a ticket and miss out on a big key component to it because it's only one night of a multi-week event.

The Traitors is a fun addition and one of the few Peacock originals that has found itself in the public consciousness. While I did like your idea for a scripted show involving different sitcom characters (watching Abed, Ron Swanson, and Dwight as traitors would've been amazing) I do appreciate the idea of making this a guest interaction show, something that really improves on the experience for those chosen to take part.

The Puppet Plaza Panic! is a lot of fun too and while the indulgence of sticking the dog puppet here again after he shows up in the Conan queue is real, I think ALF as a pick is iconic and absolutely works. There's almost zero cultural impact that ALF has left in the modern day but that alone makes it just really funny that he's here and I can see this show becoming a beloved thing that theme park fans flock to just because of how weird and wonderful it is. I also really appreciated the inclusion of the street zones as they both feel like something Universal could and should feasibly do, but are also a funny take on the horror nights scare zones that adds to the level of meta you guys are building in this project.

Kind of the same as Team Dream's project, I do wish we got more of the nighttime spectacular here. While I can appreciate that they're difficult to write, it was a part of the prompt and I do wish there was a bit more written into it because I don't really get a great feel for what you guys are showcasing beyond "history of NBC".

I love all of the food stuff a lot, the sheer amount of pop-ups you have just go to show the iconic foods in these different shows, and the craziest part is how many others you guys listed off before settling on this list. My Community fandom makes me sad I cannot get the famous chicken tenders, a Subway sandwich, or a baggle, but the selections you guys made are all truly iconic. Cheers alone is something genius that I'm glad you added, especially with the additions of bartenders who interact with guests as that's a huge part of the experience at Cheers in Boston. The Office, Parks and Rec, The Good Place, Love Island, and Central Perk all also fit very well and while the Bakery show I've never heard of, it makes sense as a pop up bakery.

The big sells here though are the Flintstones Diner which as an overlay of Mel's is super fun and kitschy in the best way, but really Festivus is the reason I broke this up into it's own paragraph. I remember y'all discussing a whole Festivus event and while I'm glad you didn't go that route (as interesting as it would've been) I am very happy you still managed to fit it into a Dick's Last Resort style dining experience. Seinfeld is an iconic sitcom still to this day and adding this in I feel would be insanely popular.

In the end, you guys did a lot of stuff and indulged in your favorites but all in the best possible way. While this felt really full of events and some of it I do wish we got more info about, I did appreciate everything we had and it all felt equal parts creative and realistic. Again, similar to Team Dream, my biggest qualm here is the lack of original artwork. Aside from the map (which again, I'm glad you guys had) I wish there was a bit more, even just an attraction sign or something like that would've been huge. Still, a fantastic project!

Team Magic- E.T.'s Earth Day Spectacular

In a competition of most original idea presented, this would win hands down because while I think Christmas and NBC Are ideas that certainly would be thrown around as hard ticket events, Earth Day is one of those wholly forgotten holidays that just don't really get their fair shake. Beyond Animal Kingdom and maybe something like SeaWorld or Busch Gardens I cannot imagine a theme park celebrating Earth Day in any major way and so this as an additional offering at a park that very much surprises me in a very intriguing way. Since I gave the other two teams a word to sum their project up, I think for you guys I'll go with "surprising."

To kick it off, I want to commend you guys for the custom artwork. I know I brought it up in the last two projects and this really proves my point that a nice personal touch brings out the spirit of the project as a whole. Not every piece of art has to be original for it to work but the use of the custom art for the logo and the topiaries are awesome and I just wanted to mention how much I appreciate them. To go with that, doing a pseudo-Flower and Garden Festival at Universal is definitely not something that I'd ever thought about but I think the inclusion of greenery and greenspaces are so important for park development and Universal could certainly use more foliage so I appreciate their addition as well as the tweaks you make at night to use them in the event itself. The minion one and the Homer backing up into the bush one especially are really fun.

E.T. as a meet and greet is just something Universal should be doing already, especially since it's their one attraction they cannot get rid of (at least until Spielberg dies) so they may as well introduce the iconic and beloved character into the park as a meet and greet. Making him an animatronic ala Epic Universe is also really smart because while I can imagine this as a costumed character, the sizing of an animatronic certainly can fit better and the technology allows them to flex on Disney just a little bit more.

The Dream Garden is a really wonderful idea, taking these iconic stories with identifiable landscapes and turning them into beautiful gardens just feels perfectly in line with what you're pitching here and my only complaint (which is a decently big one) is why is it indoors? I feel like everything you've proposed here can absolutely fit in an outdoor space and would honestly thrive being outdoors. I'm sure there's a logistical reason for it, but I can only imagine that this is going to take the same amount of construction whether it's indoors or outdoors and it's not exactly something that can be removed easily, so it may as well benefit from the Florida sunlight and atmosphere, one of the few things Florida has going for it. Still, the selection of plants is inspired for each region like swamp plants for Shrek (though no mention of wild onions), cherry blossoms for Kung Fu Panda, etc. and all work very well to sell the immersive environment, especially with the topiaries. I love when Disney has their character topiaries out so Universal would also absolutely benefit from having these. The Mongo gingerbread one especially sounds really impressive and also points out this probably should be outside. The HTTYD section, to me, feels most out of place especially since there's randomly a meet and greet in it when the others have topiaries. Don't get me wrong, meeting Toothless and Hiccup seems cool, but they are already at USO in Epic Universe so moving them here for a meet and greet randomly in an indoor garden feels strange and out of place. Still, this sounds like a gorgeous walkthrough full of smell, sight, and sound that would absolutely be worth the visit for walkthrough fans.

I didn't even know Villain Con was a thing until reading this project, but man y'all seemed to improve what is otherwise a pretty bad attraction. Taking the Minions, an iconic and yet panned group of characters, and turning them into neo-Captain Planet characters is fun and tongue-in-cheek in the right way. Taking this attraction and making the villains polluters is one way to tie the theme of the event in without really disrupting the story which is the perfect way to do an overlay. It's a fun and kid friendly way to overlay an attraction in a way that both improves it and makes it pretty easy to switch between the daytime and event versions. Good work.

Another walkthrough attraction based around plants (y'all know me so well), Fantastical Floralogy is a really fascinating way to incorporate Earth Day into the Harry Potter series. Again, I'm no fan of Harry Potter, but the one bit I do like is the worldbuilding involving the plants and creatures in it, so making a walkthrough with animatronics and puppets focusing on the (super)natural elements of the series is interesting. This is easily my favorite element of the whole project and I wish y'all had credited specifically who did what because I had to go through the messages and others don't have the liberty of doing that. Still, huge shoutout to @Outbound for this really amazing walkthrough. This would have me in Diagon Alley for sure and that is not something I would otherwise do often. The guided walkthrough, the special effects, all of it makes for a uniquely Universal attraction that honestly I wouldn't be mad if it was around year round. As a matter of fact, I think that's the case with most of these elements.

You guys really nailed the dining too and while I don't really want to go into each one individually solely because I want to get this review up and results out, I will say that there isn't one I wouldn't be waiting in line to hit (though my internet brainrotted mind mixed with my dyslexia has me reading "Supreme Kong Dog" as "Supreme Kong Dong" so take that as you will.) I will be making the Simian Punch for my next Zookeeper Team Gathering because that sounds delicious. Thneedville being mainly vegetarian is a great choice too because on Earth Day it makes a ton of sense to have vegetarian options and the Lorax likely is a vegetarian himself for if he speaks for the trees he must get sick of hearing them sometimes. All the rest sound brilliant and I love that each of them got a dedicated menu. I believe @tcool123 did most of these, so huge shout out to you for nailing this.

Finally, for your nighttime spectacular, I think you guys had the best one by virtue of it being a full writeup rather than just a paragraph. Doing this with fountains and lights and drones fits the Earth Day vibe of using water and sky but not introducing pesky fireworks that disturb wildlife, so whether that was a conscious choice or not, it worked out in your favor. Using The Lorax as a mascot works great and the inclusion of properties like Wicked, Jurassic Park, Migration, and The Wild Robot are all genius inclusions as well.

Overall, this whole project surprised me because I never would've conceived it. You guys did great art, had some attractions I wish were real, and nailed the food, but struggled with some of the realism and of the presentations I'll admit yours was the most lackluster. No matter how we slice it or dice it, this is going to be an impossibly tough choice for me.

This was an incredibly difficult first round because all three teams did some really amazing work. I think each of them did one thing better than the others and really in a just world you could all win it. Unfortunately, this isn't a just world and unfortunately, I am your overseer, so I must condemn you all to your fate. In addition to rankings and elimination though, each team will have one "MVP" chosen based on who I thought was the strongest player on that team each round. That player will go into the next round as the "Team Leader" and will be in charge of organizing the team and submitting the project on the due date. Each player's MVP total will be counted and will affect them going into the semifinals should you make it that far. That player will also not be up for elimination the round they take MVP obviously, even if their team loses. Anyway, without further ado...

Team Dream- Universal Holinights

You guys had some really strong elements like the Seuss Landing and the Christmas Village, both things I really appreciated, but ultimately it felt like you guys did a lot of things the same and lacked a bit of cohesion. It was a really fun Christmas event, but the other two projects just had more that stuck out to me.

MVP: @Mr. Sullivan- Between the presentation and various other things you worked on, you wore a lot of hats this round and your brainstorming is always great. You earned MVP this round meaning you are safe from elimination despite your team coming in last.

Team Wonder- Late Night with NBC

I was soooo close to giving you guys first place, I flipped between the top two multiple times but ultimately I settled on second for one reason: you stretched yourselves just a little bit too thin. While elements like the Conan attraction, Community Paintball, Dining, and shows were all truly amazing ideas, at the same time there was just so much that elements like the nighttime spectacular and Twisted Metal ride felt like afterthoughts. It's still a wonderful presentation and my favorite of the three concepts, but I just wish it was a little more polished.

MVP: @Pi on my Cake- This one was a no brainer, once again solely due to the amount of hats you wore. You covered a lot of stuff that was slipping below the radar and also kind of corralled the brainstorming. You earned MVP, good work!

Team Magic- E.T.'s Earth Day Spectacular

Despite what you may be thinking, no, I did not pick this one on my nature bias, I actually just found the combination of incredibly unique ideas mixed with really strong attractions and dining to steal the show here. While I had some nitpicks here and there, I just had the hardest time finding things about this project that didn't work compared to the other two. Ultimately, yes, I love a good nature project but you guys really did earn the win beyond my own biases, so amazing work and congratulations!

MVP: @tcool123- Like I said, the dining was amazing and while I didn't spend that much time on it in my reviews, it really did stand out as perfectly balanced between realism and creativity and for that reason I am giving you the MVP for the round.

That does, unfortunately, bring us to the first elimination of the game and that's never an easy choice. You guys all had really strong games, but somebody has to go home and that person is...

@spacemt354

Between showing up late into the game, a very busy (justifiably) real life, and producing what I found to be one of the weaker elements of your project in Hogsmeade, I have unfortunately made the decision for you to head out. Thank you so much for playing!

With the first round complete and in the books, I have to do a little housekeeping and team balancing. For this reason, @Earlie the Pearlie will be leaving Team Wonder and will be joining Team Dream. Please Welcome your new teammate!

Moving on, it's time to get into the second round and we've gotten some interesting news involving future Disney plans. It seems like every few years since Animal Kingdom's opening in 1998 we've been "getting a fifth gate" at Walt Disney World and with plans like Villains Land coming to Magic Kingdom, Tropical Americas coming to Animal Kingdom, and Ratatouille and Guardians of the Galaxy having opened in Epcot and Muppets staying in Hollywood Studios alongside Toy Story and Star Wars, it makes me wonder, what would a fifth gate even be? That brings us to the challenge.

Challenge Two: The Five Kingdoms
Kingdoms.jpg

Like life itself has five kingdoms, it seems it may just be destined for Walt Disney World to have the same thing. Ideas like Star Wars and Villains have been floated around before and there's no lack of speculation or armchair imagineering the topic and yet there's little consensus and with Disney moving forward in their existing parks, I found it to be an interesting conundrum. Your challenge is to create that fifth gate.

Prompt: Design a brand new fifth gate for the Walt Disney World Resort

This does come with some caveats though... You do not have to make this a "realistic" park (aka a park with four highly themed lands for one property with two rides apiece) but realism should be a factor still when designing it. You also should try to shy away from existing IP in other parks as (while it does happen) Disney typically tries to keep the IP in its particular park. Finally, you should have a few things.

1. AT LEAST four lands plus an entry land, though more are welcome.

2. A wide spectrum of attractions, shows, dining, and shopping.

3. A cohesive theme.

4. Additional entertainment ala nighttime stuff, streetmosphere, just general atmosphere.

Beyond this, the world is your oyster. Good luck

You will have an extended round this time with this project due Monday July 14th at 11:59 PST (2:59 AM EST, 1:59 AM CST, 3:59 PM PT)

Greetings teams! Alongside the extra week I now have a new challenge

Today was my niece’s birthday and she knows I play these games and loves having me read the projects from other games and personal projects to her when I’m visiting. I told her I was running a game and she requested I add something in. Unfortunately the projects are already set and I don’t think this would be a great replacement for any of them, but I like to throw a little wrench in everyone’s plans anyway so in honor of her…

Teams must have a unique character dining opportunity in their park.

It doesn’t need to be the focal point or anything, I don’t want to derail you all, but a character dining with characters you don’t always get (I.e. no Mickey, princesses, etc.) however that fits into your parks. She will then provide feedback on your character dining when I post my reviews (she’s 3 so expect the highest quality reviews).

Attention Players

With four full days to go, I don’t think I could possibly be more excited to see these fifth gates come together. That said, there’s a little detail I “forgot to mention.”

With the extended timeline I did have to work around the other rounds to not overextend the game past its original finale date. To do this, I had to cut one round which does mean:

THIS ROUND WILL BE DOUBLE ELIMINATION

Both second and third place teams will be losing a player and I am watching VERY carefully at all three teams so it’s not too late for anyone to step up their game because now its not just one player on the line, but two. Good luck and I’m excited to see it all come along!

(This is the final announcement btw, sorry there have been so many)
