Statement from Broward County Sheriff’s office. Still not clear how the girl got up on the rail.

How does a 4 year old get up on this rail?

That’s definitely more climbable than the flat rails with the plexiglass. Plus a shorter child wouldn’t be able to see through the porthole very well and might be more inclined to climb up. Kids are pretty determined. I won’t be surprised if those get covered.

There’s only so much you can reasonably do to make people safe, especially on a cruise. People go on cruises to feel close to the water.

What happened is a tragic accident.

True but the questions now are was it avoidable, who's to blame and can it be prevented in the future.
Yes, those who need that prevention can stay home.

There is a difference between something being 'unsafe' and something that can 'cause harm'. An open window will always be able to 'cause harm' until it's no longer possible for something to pass through it. That doesn't mean it's unsafe or necessarily in need of change.

Always striving to make things 'preventable' is not a standard to pursue. We should make things things safe enough so accidents aren't a high risk. When stupid humans do things to put themselves at risk by their own choice.. that isn't something we should always strive to prevent.

Of course it was avoidable. The parents are to blame for not providing the level of supervision appropriate to the age of their child under the circumstances. It can be prevented but at a cost others may not be willing to bear.

Glad this incident didn't end in tragedy.

That being said, this is why we can't have nice things. It'd be very disappointing if DCL ended up changing portholes and railings to make them more enclosed and affecting the views. And if this happened because of 'bad parenting', even more so.
Exactly. It's a scary thought but it isn't out of the realm of possibility to assume they'll reevaluate things whether it's warranted or not. Interesting to think about in any case. Though as you said, hopefully not at the detriment of diminishing the experience for others.

It’s a compromise for certain. But the more safe we make things the more people rely on everything being safe. It’s a false sense of security that ends in a diminished life.

That's not an area people go to "for the view". Nor are the shuffleboard courts in that part of the ship.

This actually looks very different than most of the rails, with that ledge midway to serve as a foothold. If the girl climbed it, 100% this will get changed (either the ledge is removed or the window is covered). Whether people agree or not, the US is a highly litigious and safety oriented society. There is absolutely no way this would stay after a child fell overboard (unless it turns out someone picked the girl up or she dragged a chair over.)
