Figment's Imagination Mini Golf

1750563966533.png

Journey into another world of pure Imagination in Figment's Imagination Mini Golf- an elaborate indoor/outdoor miniature golf course themed to the original version of Journey Into Imagination!

There are 6 recontextualized realms through the Kingdom of Imagination with three courses each, filled with small details and gags throughout while also incorporating original elements of the attraction: Dreamport (a colorful steampunk atrium with mist), Sketch and Paint Plateau (black and white papery room), Fantasy Forest (outdoor area filled with tons of plants and Disney characters), Drama Dunes (Hollywood themed with bright lights), Science Springs (glass walkways in a blacklight "space" room), and Imagination Valley (outdoor springs overlooking the DL Forward area)!

This mini-golf course is the next stage of Mini-golfing with its advanced technology; for example, the Sketch and Paint Plateau uses projection mapping to let the balls "paint" the room with color, and when the ball hits the right point in Course 9, the entire room is flooded with color, and a cartoony doorway appears to let guests into the next room!

Community Bonus: The final course takes the ball flying up on a miniature Dreamfinder's ship (there are multiple on a miniature conveyor belt), which you can follow as it flies away into the gift shop, finally landing into the ball return where a small array of projected fireworks are launched on the ceiling of the shop!

Marvin Gardens Reviews

This was one of my favorite prompts in the game. Thank you to everyone who submitted for it! I wrote the word hole so many times in these reviews that it no longer sounds like a word.

Yesterland Mini-Golf

@Disgruntled Walt

This is the kind of concept that would work wonderfully for Disneyland because of the resort’s reverence for its own history and audience of local, long-time fans. Continuing through that, I love your attention to the detail of only using Disneyland attractions here. It’s a small thing, but it truly helps to sell your concept! I also really enjoy your emphasis on mechanical elements. They’re the kind of things that bigger minigolf places can fund, and it helps to make this seem like a real course built by Disney. I wish there was a bit more thematic cohesion here beyond just a collection of defunct attractions, however. Each hole seems to be more of its own thing rather than a part of a whole, making this course feel a bit less than the sum of its parts, if that makes sense. Still, it’s a very good pitch!

Community Chest: A fitting final touch!

Muppets Mini-Golf Mayhem

@Brer Panther

The laid-back chaos of the Muppets and the laid-back chaos of miniature golf should be a match made in heaven! Details like the presence of animatronics and the haphazard construction of the course add a delightful bit of Muppety flair, and the relocation of the Piggy fountain is a lovely touch. My main nitpick here is that the hole descriptions do sound a bit too much like disconnected environments (chicken coop, cave, swamp, White House) with little to do with each other other than the Muppets. There’s so much potential for gags, water effects, and changes in elevation that come with these guys!

Community Chest: See, now we’re talking! (deja vu!)

Golf Around California

@Disney Warrior

Right off the bat, I’m going to have to knock you a little bit for the fact that this is very similar to DCA 1.0. However, that park really doesn’t exist anymore, which makes your choice of theme more acceptable! You really nailed adapting classic minigolf effects to fit your theme: water effects, different layouts, randomized layouts. You’ve thoroughly fulfilled every part of Cali one would want to see in a course - actually, it somewhat reminds me of Soarin’! While its flaws do weigh it down some, this is a unique and interesting submission.

Community Chest: Now it really reminds me of Soarin’!

Kingdom Hearts: Orb of Recontextuality

@Miru

I will admit to the fact that I genuinely know nothing about any of these IPs. Nevertheless, it strikes me as a bit strange to include various characters not already in the Kingdom Hearts series debut in a golf course. But that could just be my unfamiliarity talking!

Community Chest: This seems a bit complex, but still very cool!

Pixar Putt

Mickey Mouse & Friends’ Minigolf Fun!

@Half/CartoonHalf/Human

I didn’t know about the Pixar Putt course - thank you for teaching me that it exists!

Anyway, onto your actual submission. There’s a very interesting idea here that I wish you had gone a bit further into: the idea of a classic cartoons course! You have so many cool ideas here based on them that could easily support their own course - Fantasia, Three Little Pigs, Mickey’s Trailer, Oswald - and not many actually under the Mickey and Friends umbrella. So why not embrace that? Your submission is good as is, thanks to the full-of-character holes you describe, but with a different overall theme it could’ve been outstanding.

Community Chest: This is a really clever mechanic, and a fitting finale!

Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color Blacklight Golf

@Mr. Sullivan

This is one of only (I believe) two submissions to use blacklight, and the only one to use it exclusively. I must commend you for taking the road less travelled! This is a really clever choice of theme, as well. The detail of this course being housed in the classic animation studio is wonderful, and I’m sure the blacklight would lend a fitting trippiness to the classic Disney theme. I do wish you had spent more time describing holes, however! I like the themes you selected, but I really wanted to hear more about the mechanics of them. It’s delightful nonetheless!

Community Chest: Now it really reminds me of Soarin’! ;)

Toy Story: Mini-Mini Golf

@Lizzy May Bee

The map you drew here is genuinely adorable. I don’t love that you’ve halved the usual number of mini-golf holes, but you justify it by adding the extra mini! The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” is in full force here, as the mechanics of practically every hole are discernable from your image. While Toy Story might not be the most creatively risky theme picked for this prompt, you certainly nail the execution!

Community Chest: The claaaaaaw!

Villains Kingdom

@ThemeParkPriest

Villains is one of those themes that needs no introduction; it’s easily and immediately graspable. Your hole mechanics are well realized and perfectly suited to their respective villains, though I would’ve liked just one more to be described in detail. The mist mechanic in particular strikes me as clever and unique!

Community Chest: I think you’re the first person to include the free round gimmick. It’s incorporated well!

Figment’s Imagination Mini Golf

@Architectural Guinea Pig

This is the most ambitious submission of the round, in my opinion. It’s really amazing! The use of Journey Into Imagination for a golf course is inspired (pun intended), especially in Disneyland. The environments you describe strike me as some of the richest of the round. I would say that I wish you had spent more time on describing holes, but you nail down the environment so well that it’s entirely forgivable. This pitch feels like a course only Disney could create, and I think it’s wonderful.

Community Chest: You know those movies where they have the stuff fly around the ceiling of magical toy/candy shops? This is kinda like that!

@Half/CartoonHalf/Human & @Disney Warrior

While both of these pitches have thematic flaws, your hole designs were some of the strongest in the round!

The Automobile

Toy Story: Mini-Mini Golf

@Lizzy May Bee

While the small scale of this pitch keeps it from first, the map was a very clever way to literally illustrate the entire course!

The Top Hat

Figment's Imagination Mini Golf

@Architectural Guinea Pig

What can I say? The scale and scope of this pitch was exceptional, and it truly felt like a themed attraction - not just a golf course!

Pacific Avenue

There’s no place like World Showcase on the face of the whole wide world! Since 1982, this permanent exhibition of the world has put culture, customs, and cuisine on display for guests of EPCOT Center/Epcot ‘94/Epcot/EPCOT to partake in. Its eleven pavilions are each unique, with some sort of element that perfectly showcases that country. In Norway, for example, the Maelstrom “travelogue” boat ride immersed guests in a world of Vikings, trolls, oil rigs, and other stuff you’d definitely see in person if you visited the country. Although it’s now gone, Maelstrom is remembered as one of the weirdest - but also most interesting - dark rides in Disney history.

Design a new country pavilion for World Showcase that is centered around a travelogue dark ride in the vein of Maelstrom

This prompt is due on Wednesday the 25th at 12:00 AM, Disneyland Time (PST)

Tips ‘n’ Tricks

The emphasis here should be on the ride itself; the pavilion should be secondary. If you think the best path for your ride is as part of an expansion to an existing pavilion, you can do it! Make sure your ride makes guests want to visit your chosen country, as that’s the true heart and soul of travelogues!

In an extra image (once again, no AI, please!), design a logo for your pavilion or ride.

INDONESIA

This sweltering archipelago nation, the fourth most populous in the world, makes its World Showcase debut as a romanticized-yet-authentic swirl of influences, from Jakarta’s colonial old town, to the tropical beaches of Bali, to the dragon-infested jungles of Komodo, to the fortresses of Java, to the mysterious ancient ruins of Majapahit, and more, all appearing as little islets arranged organically around lagoon waterways, altogether an example of Indonesia’s diverse geography in miniature.

“Sandeq” outrigger yachts glide across the archipelago waterways and enter a sunken limestone cavern as the start of our pavilion’s centerpiece travelogue dark ride, “Gajah Mada Voyage,” which ferries guests along a stylized recreation of Indonesia’s millennia-long history, from its early settlement by Stone Age wayfarers, to the unification by Srivijaya, to the mighty empire of Majapahit, to the European colonization of the East Indies, to the climactic eruption of Krakatoa, and beyond all the way to Sulawesi’s modern multicultural miasma.

Like “it’s a small world,” this boat ride is a stylized fusion of catchy music (big on the traditional gamelans) and stylized visuals heavily inspired by wayang puppeteering, just one of many authentic touches throughout - in addition to believably textured architectural detailing and lived-in details and unapologetically exotic cuisine such as satay skewers and Javanese coffee and Gado-Gado salads - which permeate this pavilion and make it a rich eye-opening cultural experience rather than a touristy Americanized travesty (a World Showcase first!!!).

Brazil
The long-rumored Brazil pavilion comes to EPCOT headlined by a brand new dark ride that takes guests on a tour of - where else - the Amazon. Amazon River Rush has guests boarding wooden canoes for a nighttime tour of the vast rainforest, with jaguars, river dolphins, birds, monkeys, sloths, tapirs, colorful frogs, and river otters among the fauna that you'll run into - but be warned, the mythical Yacuruna just might make your cruise a bit more nerve-wracking, specifically by lifting your canoe out of the water and carrying it up through the various layers of the rainforest, all the way up to the canopy (leading to, of course, a drop).

And yes, I know this attraction would probably fit better in Animal Kingdom than in EPCOT, but Disney thinks it's much more important to put Indiana Jones and Encanto rides in Animal Kingdom instead for some inexplicable reason so into EPCOT it goes!

Tanzania
Replacing the African Outpost is a new African pavilion based on Tanzania, modeled after Zanzibar's Stone Town and Dar es Salaam (with a tinga-tinga mural depicting Mt. Kilimanjaro and the surrounding area in the background) to make it unique from Animal Kingdom. In this land's dark ride, Kuvutia (Swahili for captivating), guests board boats similar to those in the above photo to go on an adventure through the country, highlighting the wildlife, natural beauty, and culture of Tanzania (including the incorporation of indigenous cultures in a way that isn’t disrespectful), as you'll see zebras, sea turtles, elephants, giraffes, and monkeys (among others) in locations based on Zanzibar, Lake Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and the Serengeti. However, your boat will encounter the evil Winged Bat (who is way less scary and more family-friendly in this ride than in real folklore) midway through, and only an escape (small drop) can lead you back to safety.

Greece is the newest addition to Epcot, an exotic land tucked along the World Showcase lagoon and rising like an island out of the sea with classic Greek architecture alongside white-washed and blue domed buildings, all set off by pink bougainvillea trees offering a stunning welcome for its shops and restaurant.

At the rear of the pavilion, guests board a 2-seat Omnimover vehicle (enabling climbs and dips that echo the landscape) shaped like a classic Greek chariot for HELLENIC PASSAGE, which begins with a celebration of the country’s rich heritage as we journey past representations of the Acropolis and the Colossus of Rhodes, and mark the birth of democracy in 5th Century Athens, before inspiring guests with the contemporary beauty of Greek Isles like Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, and Corfu.

As our travelogue nears its end, we pass by Olive Grove Bistro, the pavilion’s signature dining experience taking in aromas of Baklava and Moussaka before exiting past a kiosk where we can learn more about Greece and possibly book future passage on a cruise of the islands.

Iceland: Fantastic Voyage
With the loss of Maelstrom, a true travelogue ride for the Nordic countries is missing from Epcot; Iceland: Fantastic Voyage is a thrilling journey by sled through the Icelandic wilderness, culminating in a captivating view of the Aurora Borealis.

Beginning your journey in Reykjavik, guests will encounter an arctic fox (the only land mammal native to Iceland), who will appear throughout the attraction as a sort of guide. Highlights (other than the climactic Aurora Borealis) include a view of the Reykjavik cityscape at night, a volcanic eruption, majestic waterfalls and geysers, and a slippery trip across a glacier.

Community Chest: While my art doesn't do it justice, the logo for this attraction is a fiber-optic effect, making the name of the attraction appear in the Aurora Borealis.

Indigenous Diaspora

As a sort of retheme/overhaul of The American Adventure, this land focuses on the indigenous peoples of the Americas as a way to make up for the loss of Rivers of America, celebrating them in a way not seen since ODL’s Indian Country, albeit with far more respect than beforehand, including the new ride Coyote Mountain, an indoor giga coaster based on the myths of Coyote, and the architecture of the pueblos. You start in a queue that depicts the dawn of the world, as mankind is made out of corn before your eyes, before boarding your coaster cars for the intense ride to ensue.

The technologically-advanced and historically significant country of South Korea (home to approximately 50 million people) is the newest pavilion at World Showcase. On the South Korea Express Train (a two-car train with room for four in the diesel and six in the passenger), guests will tour the country starting with the Gyeongbokgung royal palace in Seoul (which the narrator mentions was established in 1395, burned down in 1592 during the Imjin War, and fully reconstructed in 1888), then the Myeongdong street market (of modern Seoul) for some bibimbap rice bowl, followed by heading south to Yeosu, site of the international Expo 2012 before a visit to the Kia Tigers (12 time champions of the KBO League) of Gwangju for a baseball game. The small coastal city of Mokpo (most noteworthy for hosting a now-priest for a month) serves as the departure point for a ferry ride to the tropical Jeju Island—a UNESCO global geopark and site of volcanic activity.

Benin
IMG_9693.jpeg

Benin is a small West African nation that has a rich cultural history focused around the rich and powerful kingdom of Dahomey, a once powerful kingdom that played an integral role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade as well as Islamic settlement in West Africa, filled with landmarks such as the large chameleon-shaped Voodoo Temple of Abomey, the iconic Temple des Pythons which is filled with live pythons that call it home, the Great Mosque of Porto-Novo, and the hauntingly beautiful “La Porte Du Non Retour” representing the last part of Africa many slaves would step on before being shipped overseas.

In modern years, the efforts of Benin to reclaim stolen artifacts at the British Museum and other museums worldwide has plunged the nation into the public spotlight and so Epcot in association with the government of the Republic of Benin would produce accurate replicas of countless lost and recovered artifacts to be utilized in the boat farm ride attraction: Benin: Our Story of Africa, which tells the history and culture of Benin through recreations of their artwork in audio animatronic farm including accurate depictions of voodoo belief, the French colonization, and eventually the revolution that would earn Benin its freedom, all through the gorgeous and unique artwork created by the people who lived in it.

Besides the attraction, the Benin Pavilion will be packed with gorgeous architecture, a bustling street market where visitors can try local dishes and buy many hand-made souvenirs straight from Beninese craftspeople and like every other pavilion, Benin is packed with live performances from dancers to drummers that share their unique cultures, but none more than the table service restaurant “Tastes of Dahomey” where guests are invited to try authentic cuisine and eat it the Benin way: with their hands!

No Art I do could ever compare to the real deal, stolen 100 years ago for display in European museums, so with respect, the icon of the Benin Pavilion should be that of true Dahomey artwork.
Totally didn’t realize the ride caveat in my initial submission. Edited it to rectify that oversight. Hope that’s okay since it was before due date anyway but if not I understand

EGYPT - STORIES OF THE NILE

egyptbarge.jpg

Guests will enter EPCOT's newest attraction, Stories of the Nile, via a large and detailed pyramid that houses both the ride's queue and loading station as well as an indoor market, museum themed to Egyptian queen's throne room, and an all new table service restaurant serving authentic Egyptian cuisine.

The attraction is an indoor boat ride in which guests will board a recreation of an Ancient Egyptian river barge and set sail down the Nile River as it flows through time, beginning at the birth of the Egyptian empire all the way through to the eventual end of the Pharonic empire with the Roman conquest and death of Cleopatra.

The attraction features an impressive amount of audio animatronics and physical sets that depict various key events in Egyptian history such as the settlement of the Nile valley, the invention of Egypt's writing system, the crowning of Narmer as the first leader of a unified Egypt, the development of the mummification process, the construction of the Great Pyramids, the rise of the first female Pharaoh, the ascension of nine year old "boy king" Tutankamen, the carving of the Rosetta Stone, and the fall of the empire.

CHANCE CARD: In a nod to a bygone but beloved era of EPCOT history, guests will be thrilled to discover once they board their barges that the attraction features narration of the various scenes provided by none other than Jeremy Irons, moved over from his spot on Spaceship Earth to the Nile River.

Taiwan

1750907460640.png

Welcome to Taiwan, Epcot's latest and greatest World Showcase Pavilion, featuring the rich cultural and natural beauty of the lush east asian island, as guests are able to explore the lantered pathways of the bustling area and its unique night market (where different stalls of many Taiwanese foods like Oyster Omelette and fried Doughnut create a permanent foodie-paradise environment)!

Taking inspiration from the Spirited Away-esque mountainside town of Jiufen, the land contains a lush backdrop of bamboo, a sweeping mountain range, waterfalls and more, where deeper into the tranquil gardens lies the entrance to the park's travelogue style dark ride: the Heart of Asia, a suspended dark-ride where guests ride bikes (ala E.T.) to cycle around Taiwan.

Taking off from an array of caverns looking out into pools of water, where bioluminescent creatures glow (a staple of Taiwan's natural beauty, as seen in the Life of Pi), the bikes turn to look over the night market before returning to the dense foliage of the lush island, where the bikes weave in and out of the mountains to the peak, with a new scene at each level: guests pass through miniature dioramas of temples, indigenous lakes cities, beaches, and more until they find the Heart of Asia, a glowing tree at the mountain peak that overlooks a large fireworks ceremony (through a panoramic screen), before ascending back down the mountain and concluding the experience.

Cryptid Huntin’ at The American Adventure
IMG_0216.png
The American Adventure is probably the strangest part of World Showcase, and while I don’t think adding to it would be quite enough to fix it, I think something a little more timeless than “America’s best people” could certainly help, so on that note, let me introduce Cryptid Huntin’! Like Maelstrom, the ride is based off mythology, however as the name implies it’s based off of 1950s American folklore, with guests taking on the role of Cryptid enthusiasts on a cross-country road-trip that has them encounter scenes featuring cartoony depictions of Squatch, Nessie, Mothman, Green Aliens, and more! The ride would also be complemented by a typical tourist trap gift shop (think Mystery Shack) that would sell novelty merchandise and snacks themed around the different creatures depicted in the ride.
