Box Office first pass estimate is in for this weekend, and for Elio this one is definitely an Oof!

Elio did below its already modest opening estimates, at $21 Million domestically. It's worse overseas, at only $14 Million from foreign lands. Elio has already opened in all major countries except Japan, Spain, and Finland (Nordic not Scandinavian!) .

Hey, at least Elio beat Strange World's opening weekend!

But for only Pixar movies, Elio just scored the lowest box office debut in Pixar history. And that's unadjusted for inflation over the past 30 years. Oof!

Man, the disparity between original content and familiar stuff is really remarkable.

It's not a slight hesitation, it's outright rejection.

It doesn't seem to be a case of quality product either, because Moana 2 was straight-to-DVD mediocrity and people came out in droves.

In all fairness when was the last time Disneyland put a brand new movie character in a parade during its opening weekend? The 90s? 80s? I think it’s been a few decades since they’ve done it.

Except it would be ideal marketing to do so now. They can't even bother to put up an advertising sign.

Except it should have come out last year. Disney knew the movie schedule and purposely put it there with very little advertising.

Don’t disagree, but it’s not like they do that anymore. This isn’t the 80s or 90s, marketing campaigns like that don’t happen anymore and may never again. Heck we’re lucky if we get a new parade in general let alone one that features any recent characters.

Several weeks ago I said a movie should be expected to add another 2-fold of its prior weeks earnings, as kind of the normal tail.

3 weeks ago - It sat at 772.6M and had earned 161.8 implying 1.096B
2 weeks ago it sat at 858.4M and earned 85.8M implying 1.003B
This week it sits at 910.3M and earned 51.9M implying 1.014B

We can see it’s reasonably on track still. Yes it will probably be quite a while and HTTYD knocked it back a peg, but its recovering trajectory.

And despite its outward appearance as being number 1 Dragon is even starting to underperform. It’ll do better than breakeven, but it’s not gonna be a huge hit, may not even bring in as much as the animated movies. I really think it was too soon for Uni to make a live-action version of this franchise.

It could have “amazing” legs and still be a failure.

Math and understanding of the goals is often lost here.

Don’t believe me…Disney didn’t really market it. They trying to tank their own great movie? Or making a calculated assessment?
