I know a lot of people didn't see this, but it's still odd to come to the thread after watching it on Disney+ to find 25 pages of discussion and maybe 3-5 actual thoughts on the movie.

For me, this was fine.

The music was good, but lacked a real showstopper. Even just one "Under the Sea" level memorable song can make or break a movie's appeal & impact, in my opinion.

The CGI dwarfs were a little odd at first but I got used to them.

One pet peeve of mine present here is the over the top mine cart sequence. It's a huge over the top environment that could only exist thanks to CGI. It ends up being a very cartoonish scene, when in a live action remake I actually want to see what the story is like when it is a little more grounded in reality.

The changes to the story were good overall. It was modernized without losing the core of the original.

I do wish they'd kept the original finale chasing the witch in the lightning storm. That's dramatic and cinematic. This ending felt like a low key variation how the villains met their fate in the first and third Indiana Jones movies.

The box office disconnect with some of these underperformers is interesting. This and Wish were both perfectly fine, but not great, movies. Both, however, I enjoyed a lot more than Moana 2. That was a direct to DVD effort and very much felt like it. Audiences are rewarding extremely uninspired content that is safe and familiar, and that is concerning.

I’ve opened D+ to watch Snow White a half dozen times this week and still haven’t started it, I’m just not excited about it, I started but never finished Moana2, started but never finished TLM, I watched Wish once, watched the new Indy movie once, watched Mufasa once, watched Strange World once, I haven’t even started the last couple Star Wars shows yet because the previous ones were so bad… I’m a huge Disney fan and I struggle to get excited for anything they’ve released lately, it’s probably worse for casual Disney fans… I think people stopped rewarding Disney based on reputation a half decade ago. They’ve had a few huge uninspired money makers like Moana2 and Stitch but they’ve had more misses than hits recently.

I think the only movie they’ve released in the past 4 years I’ve watched more than once was Elemental (which wasn’t great but was at least enjoyable), I’ve probably watched Encanto and Soul more times than everything released after 2021 combined, Disney has lost their groove.

After reading a lot of the criticisms surrounding this film, I was expecting Gal Gadot's acting to be horrid. I agree it wasn't good, but I didn't hate her performance either. Cringy at parts, but I felt her as being the wicked queen fit more (somewhat) than the guy who played the live action Jafar, for example.
The original animated wicked queen was often bland in mannerisms and emotion until she turned into the old hag. Gal didn't need to give us an epic Glenn Close Cruella performance (my favorite live action villain adaptation to this day) to do the character justice.

With Gadot you know what you're going to get going in. If I'd expected more I could see being disappointed.

I think she's better in the hero role than the villain. As Wonder Woman she gets by because her charisma and charm carry the character. You want to root for her.

As a villain she doesn't quite hit the mark. The Queen should be evil but with a bit of campy fun to her as well. Flat just doesn't cut it here.

Finally watched this out of curiosity and hated almost everything about it by the end. Imo this movie was cooked the moment Wicked came out and did the fantasy movie musical thing 100x better.
I honestly wonder if this film might have done better theatrically if it had been released before Wicked Part One.

Family watched it this weekend on Disney+ and to be kind this is not a good film. Choices for both leads was a huge mistake. And.. Why does the prince sound like Kermit the frog when he sings?
Animals were cute though.
