It’s far more reasonable to take the viewpoint that the new show won’t measure up to MV3D. For Muppet fans, I doubt anything could.
Eh…. It’s not just cause “muppet fans” - I could care less about Bugs Life as a franchise but there’s nobody as clever as Kevin Rafferty left at WDI - so there is no way that zootopia script is going to be as good.

You really think Disney has any writers as clever as Bill Prady!? And directors as creative as Jim Henson?

Guess they should stop writing new shows forever huh?

It seems like your setting yourself up for disappointment with that kind of thinking.

Is 19 billion dollars not enough for you?
That's more that Harry Potter ($7.11 billion), Spiderman ($14.526 billion), and Looney tunes ($16.777 billion).

I'm sure some of the numbers are outdated... but its a top 20 merchandising franchise of all time even at the 19 billion number.
Where does $19Bn come from? I haven’t seen any reliable lifetime merchandise sales estimates since around 2011.

The only thing relatively recently (2017) shows a drop as each successive film has come out

I mean, Betty Boop was once a merchandising sensation too. Too bad Universal has that IP locked down!

For a franchise that hasn’t been relevant for more than a decade that no one cares about anymore.

Sort of like Cars.

Hmmmmmm
Monsters Inc remains one of the single most popular IPs in Disney’s library to this very day. I’m really not sure if you just don’t know anybody who grew up in the 2000s or you’re ignoring them because it doesn’t fit your narrative, but this movie has endured with those kids and that is evidenced not only in the depth of social media culture around it, but also in the sheer volume of merch it moves to this day. When the D23 announcements came out, this was one of very few things that actually got coverage in mainstream media that doesn’t typically touch on theme park news and the reason for that is because Monsters Inc. is just absurdly popular.

I said nothing about cleverness though. Just that there will be a new show. I’ve already shared that I don’t think we will see a replacement as clever MV3D. I’m more open to ITTBAB as it wasn’t my favorite show. Zoogether will be different than ITTBAB but could work. We shall see. That one song was a bit cringey…….

More popular than stitch?
I would think based on how I see either one engaged with that Stitch is probably more popular as a single character but Monsters Inc is more popular as a film outside of it’s characters.

With the success of the live action Stitch, I imagine that we’ll be seeing his park presence return in the near future. This film has reproven the interest in the IP beyond just Stitch himself (which was never in question imo). Monsters Inc hasn’t had to have its interest reproven which is why I imagine this was greenlit.

There is nothing they can put in that theater that will justify cutting MV3D. I can say that with 100% certainty.
I mean, if they put TTBAB in the theatre, it wouldn't fit the land, but would certainly be an improvement over MV3D. People seem to forget that MV was a quick appetizer to what was supposed to be a main course attraction. It's not Henson's opus.
