News Western Way Expansion and Interchange Redesign

I returned from a DLR trip last month and booked a night for a hotel room in Flamingo Crossing before I drove home the next day. Just to get there from the airport car park, I had to drive down I-4, turn onto Osceola Parkway, exit onto Buena Vista Drive, and turn left onto Western Way to get to the hotel in Flamingo Crossing. So my route took me directly through WDW without even staying there. Now add me plus thousands more with the Buena Vista Drive/Western Way intersection as nothing more than a bottleneck on a through traffic route during peak times.

Western Way also touches a decent chunk of land suitable for development on the west side of property.

I don't know of any plans for that land. But I'm also skeptical enough to think that Disney's not spending money unless it benefits shareholders.

Interesting to see that some of the "marginally unsuitable" land is Villain Land.

Only other road project I hope gets approved is improving the World Drive to Epcot Center Drive exit... always congested during MK close and becomes dangerous to maneuver around with people not knowing where to go.

I have my doubts about the new intersection using Blizzard’s entrance road being a good solution for morning traffic, but did learn that the Turnpike does have an improvement plan for the Western Way interchange (I had thought CFX still was in control to that point of the 429, so had always looked in the wrong place), and seeing that after sitting through the meeting tonight I feel much more hopeful about afternoon traffic flow being improved if both projects actually happen and finish close to the same time. The bridge over Reedy Creek and the wetlands being built with existing unused structure in the middle anticipating future expansion is very fortunate (widening will be towards the middle), but still…probably 3+ years out on completion if I were to guess. Probably will have the primary contractors selected towards the end of the year based on the planning timeline mentioned today.
