Is Chernabog even really that scary? Dude got run off by some bells and singing.
Well, he is a demonic entity after all. He will definitely be scary/offensive to a certain conservative demographic. I would be impressed if they make him an AA in the dark ride like a final boss or something.

So assuming* this is not put on hold / delayed by the trade war, this is expected to open in around 2030, correct? So 6 years after being announced….

Meanwhile, Universal plan to build a new theme park in the UK - to open in 2030.

Edit: oops, should have read to the end, they’re now saying 2031. Even so, it still highlights a massive disparity between the 2 companies.

What's the point of "turbocharge' if it's opening in 6 years? I'm aware that they are working on a lot of projects on both coasts which is great and if you combine all of it it could very well be a brand new park.

They said everything announced at D23 last year would open in 5 years so would be 2029, and this is 2031 so 2 year difference from opening date.

But we shall see - with everything globally both could see delays

Disney construction is crazy slow, but the other issue you have is that, if Disney was building a UK park, they might have announced it 5+ years ago and start building it a few years from now. Universal usually announces stuff a LOT later on than Disney.

They announced they purchased the land for the park in 2023, but Disney probably would have announced the park even earlier than that to be honest.

Anyways, been said many times before. Universal does seem to build stuff faster, and Disney prolongs a lot of projects. But measuring from announcement to opening is not as meaningful as measuring the length of actual construction, as their practice of announcing plans varies so dramatically.

I'll clarify - if the general public really appreciates the money poured into Darkmoor, then they can up the Villains budget. If the Burning Blade Tavern is a blockbuster, if the Stakehouse is a hit, if the monster version of Bippity Boppity Boutique makes bank, then Disney knows they need to invest higher in those little creative extras.

If not, if the monster makeover is only about as popular as the Savi Lightsaber shop... If after a year and we get into an off season, are all demographics flocking there or is it just a place for theater teens to hang out at? I'm sure it will be some level of popular, but will it be in last place compared to Nintendo, Berk, and Potter?
You’re still describing reprogramming and redesigning. That’s more expensive to do the further you are in the design process. It’s also indulging one of Disney’s biggest problems, indecision.

I also don’t understand why people keep pretending like this is some big unknown. The project was already approved. They’re not looking to the new show or Dark Universe to tell them if it works. Halloween has been exploding in popularity for years now. Their own sales and events have been doing well with the subject.

In this case though, that’s not the case.

The deal has only just been agreed between Comcast and the UK government.

The land was bought, but Comcast wanted infrastructure improvements, such as the just-announced expansion of Luton airport plus some railway pledges. This seems like a very orchestrated deal leading to yesterday’s actual confirmation.

So this was the earliest it could be announced.

And to be honest, with no actual work started, it could still end up being cancelled.

I am willing to bet the UK park opens before we see villains land open - just my opinion ;)

That is actually the best idea... Reshape the island, remove the fort and back half, and fill in the river retaining a loop where the fort bridge is... The new reclaimed land from the rest of the river could be for Villains, create new settings along the river for the newly shortened River boat journey and a draw bridge for TSI... Also an expanded real restaurant on the island looking over Liberty Square. Perhaps it could even be a Tiana Restaurant... Perhaps even adding to and upgrading the features on the island...new additional things to explore.... Put Cars in DHS where it is a better fit for the tone of that park...
Or move it over to the Speedway location....

Yeah, Mickey's Not So Scarry is probably providing the template for what Villains land will be like.

There really aren't that many scary Disney villains anyways. Chernobog and Maleficent are the big two -- well, and the Horned King, but there's no way he will be heavily featured. The Evil Queen is probably the next closest unless I'm forgetting someone (and I certainly could be).

Evil Queen in her hag makeup is probably the scariest Disney villain as far as having a reputation for scaring kids.

Headless Horseman is another contender, but he's already in the park and Not So Scary when he rides by.

IMO the scariest stuff in Disney movies are things that happen, not specific characters. Lapwick's transformation into a Donkey. Bambi's mother getting shot (and then that bird that freaks out later in the movie and gets herself killed). Ichabod's ride through the woods before he meets the Horseman. When Aurora is left alone and the room goes dark as a disembodied voice calls her name.
