DHS Monster Inc Land Coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios

They could always put a newly rebooted MILF with more in-theater effects and some animatronics instead of just screens in the theater... and open up more space for a new attraction in Tomorrowland.... maybe something that actually fits the theme of the land... Not Stitch or Monsters....

I like Laugh Floor well enough, but I’m not sure replacing a beloved, critically acclaimed show with a less beloved, less critically acclaimed show that pulls smaller crowds is a big win. It also means Disney is still just removing and not replacing Muppets, they’ve just moved the now-empty theater to Magic Kingdom.

I know everyone keeps referencing Put That Thing Back, but it doesn’t fit a 3D theater. 3D movies need a hook, a narrative way to engage with the 3D. Muppets, because of the property’s theatrical and satirically postmodern nature did this better than any other 3D attraction in history. Put That Thing is a no-budget community theater stage show. A big part of the joke is how limited the production is.

Now, great creativity and virtuosic writing can get around all this and find a 3D hook for almost any property. But is Disney capable of that? And why hamstring the project with the considerable initial difficulty of an IP/attraction type mismatch?

I would also prefer they gut the theater to do a small dark ride. It better suits both the franchise and the needs of DHS. I don’t know if that building is big enough to hold one or not, but I think they could make it work. If Universal can squeeze Secret Life of Pets in, Disney could do a Monsters dark ride.

It does look like there is enough space to actually do a reasonably sized dark ride in there...especially it it traveled up to a second level doubling the space. It appears to be larger than Peter Pan with the new extended queue and part of the Columbia Harbor House...

I'm just tired of coming on here to read news and rumors and discussion and it's always the same 10 or so people just being like "NOPE WON'T HAPPEN" "NOPE THEY NEVER BUILT THIS, THEY NEVER BUILT THAT" "NOPE THEY WON'T FINISH THIS" "NOPE THEY WON'T MAINTAIN THIS"

I get that as well. But the sad reality is those people are more often right than wrong. If anyone, be mad at Disney for continuously under delivering on what they say. I didn't create that attitude, Disney did. Most of the fans who are like this, just want them to do better.

Like jeez, if all Disney does is disappoint you over and over then why even give a s*** about it at this point?

That should be an easy question to answer. A lot of people here have a deep history with this company. Most don't want to always question what they are doing. They want them to do better. They don't want classic attractions to be killed to make room for something inferior. I'd much rather talk about how galaxys edge (my most anticipated park project ever) beat all my expectations, but I can't. And that's Disneys fault, not mine. And I'm not going to stick up for them because of some obligation as a Disney fan.

Hey, you know what would make this land work a LOT better? Taking a page from Zootopia and using lots of AAs, puppets, and other effects to make it seem densely populated with monsters.

I'm not worked up. Yes people shouldn't say things that aren't true, but opinions are opinions. How do you know it's not vapor engineering? What kind of show is it? What's it about? Is it a movie show, live action? They have nothing. Just because they said it, doesn't make it true either. My point was if people think it's bogus, they have every right to. It's Disneys job to prove us wrong. And I am always happy to eat crow. I want Disney to prove me wrong.

I see no problem with alternate opinions and with being skeptical. I think we all know nothing is set in stone until it opens and even then sometimes it’s not set in stone for long. That being said, this is the thread about Monsters Land so I think it’s fair game for people to speculate about what was actually announced, what type of show it will be, what the restaurants will be like….etc, without the same couple people (not talking about you here) shouting down the discussion and insisting there won’t be a show at all. Maybe that’s true, maybe it will get cut, it’s a fair opinion to have but maybe just say it once and move on. It’s OK to believe that, it’s a valid opinion. It’s also OK for other people to want to talk about what was actually announced.

This isn’t just an armchair imagineering debate like the discussion around MV3D or another Muppets show replacing Villians/Lightning McQueen show next to RNRC. That concept is pure fan speculation (educated guess because it makes a lot of sense) but was never even implied by Disney let alone announced.

Respectfully, it feels like this has been said constantly for the past 3-4 years now and (besides Tron) there's still nothing happening in the areas that actually feel dull.

I mean, what else can they do after Frontierland? Another redo of Fantasyla-oh I just jinxed it.

I DO wonder what's keeping them from a complete redo of Tomorrowland. Outside of lack of marketable sci-fi IPs.

Muppets aren’t really owning that area very well. It was always obvious that it was leftover from the backlot, frozen in this “Uh, no it’s not a backlot, it really is New York now… unless it’s not,” halfway space. Adding PizzaRizzo helped, but they removed all the muppety decorations on the back buildings.

MuppetVision is a great attraction, but the “Land” is simply not very good. Monsters will more confidently OWN the land. Putting Monsters in Animation Courtyard would leave this half NY, half backlot problem unsolved.

It all makes sense as long as there’s something else in mind for AC.

I can see that side of it. However I think Monsters Inc going that far is kind of a stretch. It seems like it would be forced to make Monsters Inc a fleshed out land. I am picturing kind of what Sesame Street at Sea World is. Which works in a corner but is kind of forced. I don't need everything to be a land the size of the medium to larger size ones.
Muppets have always worked because the best versions and original version of the show was about backstage production and the meta around it with it.

I think it actually got worse once Pizza Rizzo opened and the ice cream wall/extended queue stripped.

It will be a success 100%. But I think you missed what the root of why people are upset. It's not because of monsters. It's the removal of Muppet vision when it wasn't needed. I've been on the boards nearly 20yrs now. I've supported the door coaster from the very first rumors. And I still do. It's not a schtick being upset the muppet vision is going away. If people are saying monsters is going to fail, yea, that's a schtick. But I'm not sure I've seen that at all.

This may be true. I think it is more likely that the reason it was not announced at D23 was that they were not 100% on the location. If Monsters went to AC there may not have been a show or at least not the same show. Remember the alternate concept art that looked more like the AC location showed a slide which implied a kids play area (see below). Picking Muppets area instead the theater is already there. Nothing to build. Easy and cheap to reuse the building for a show. It’s still possible the AC location could have had a ride, show and play area but my guess is the ride was going in no matter what but the secondary attraction was either going to be a play area or a show and since they went Muppets we got a show.

Too late now but door coaster would go where Launch Bay is now. Disney Jr. becomes the new Monsters Show. Where would Harryhausen's go? Gut Little Mermaid? I guess I can see why they went with Muppets Courtyard instead. Not a fan of losing MuppetVision (for now. We still haven't heard the final result of what will happen to it.)

More popular than that existing corner of the park. Higher guest numbers and guest spending on retail and dining. Overall park GSATs rise. Enhanced Lightning Lane revenue. Bob adds new tile backsplash in his home’s 5th bathroom.

I still want to know the purpose or point of their “exploring creative discussions about preservations”. What that says to me is that they aren’t committed to one idea yet and will not be for a long time.
