Track 5
Penny Lane

Still hanging around the mid-60's, The Beatles Penny Lane takes us down memory lane for some of the bandmates as they describe the people, sights, sounds and shops of their childhood during a day on of course, Penny Lane. Quite a departure melodically from our previous #1's, and oddly enough did not reach #1 in the UK, only lasting for a week in that spot in the U.S. Regardless, a good tune that brought a bit of notoriety to the real life location.

1731446536785.png

Theme parks take us down memory lane as well with their own sights and sounds. Whether it be an attraction, show, theming or characters, all come together to make some of the world's best theme park lands really stand out. What can absolutely put a land over the top though is the shops and diversions that fully flesh out the space. From Diagon Alley, to Batuu, to Silver Dollar City, to Main Street USA, and more, a really well themed shop can be an unforgettable experience.

-Challenge-
Create and design a new highly themed and immersive shop/experience for any theme park land around the world. Your shop should enhance and elevate the land itself solidifying it as a one-of-a-kind offering that will have guests clamoring to buy more and take a stroll down memory lane.

-Rules-

  • Your shop can be at any theme park around the world (Disney, Universal, European parks, etc.)
  • You may use between 1 to 3 sentences and up to 1 image.
  • No AI generated artwork, writing, or assistance in the brainstorming process is allowed
-Deadline-
This project is due on Sunday, November 17th at 11:59 PM Disneyland Time
(2:59 AM WDW Time)

-Tips-

K.I.S.S. – Keep it simple, silly. Try not to complicate or overthink things too much. It’s a simple, casual competition – there are no eliminations. Propose as you please, let your imagination soar!

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

BONUS: Share more details on a new product for the shop that will have guests lining up to purchase it. You may use one extra sentence and image.
This bonus results in automatic bonus point

Coming to Epic Universe's Super Nintendo World as part of the park's “Phase 2” is a new shopping center based on the fan favorite Mario Kart track. Guests can check out the many shops (and the food court) within, inspired by Mario characters and selling Mario, Nintendo, and general Epic Universe merchandise. And yes, the (in)famous Coconut Mall theme from the games plays on the speakers, just keep an eye out for any blue shells, lightning bolts, or stars!

Bonus:
Guests can purchase a Mario Kart TrackBuilder, a toy that allows them (similar to the old KNEX Mario Kart toys) to build their own Mario Kart track (it also comes with an RC car of Mario).

Gonzo's Bizarre Bazaar
1731451915123.png
Replacing the Stage One Company Store at Disney's Hollywood Studios is this strange little emporium run by the Great Gonzo - where weirdness is not just accepted, it's encouraged! A bit of inspiration is taken from the scrapped "Museum of the Weird" concept for Disneyland, with strange decor and animatronics scattered around - merchandise is held in the mouths of enormous Muppet monsters, funhouse mirrors and "Magic Eye" posters are framed and hung up on the walls, Muppet rats and chickens ride ziplines over the shoppers' heads, secret doors in the walls swing open for animatronic Muppets like Zoot, Animal, Beauregard, Lew Zealand, and Crazy Harry to poke their heads out and crack jokes, there's even a large aquarium tank filled with goofy Muppet fish. Of course, all sorts of Muppet merchandise can be found here, but even if you don't plan on buying anything, you'll probably wind up walking into the shop just to see what's going on in there now!

BONUS: Along with the shop, Gonzo has also written a book (much like Kermit, Piggy, and Pepe have before him): I'm Proud to Be a Whatever: The Great Gonzo's Guide to the World, in which he fills us in as to how he views the world around him, with subjects including friendship, fame, movie-making, classic literature, and what to do when you're owned by a company that doesn't understand you at all.

Jumba Jookiba's Secret Lab

Within the former location of Stitch's Great Escape, Jumbo Jookiba has set up his secret laboratory to create experiments such as Stitch, in plush format (#synergy with the live-action remake!). This is a Disney-quality, Build-A-Bear-style experience for the young'uns to creatively design their own alien, with a preshow (in the same preshow location as SGE) including animatronics of Jumba and Pleakley introducing the concept. It's Disney's perfect plan: selling cuteness, and unlike Savi's Workshop, anyone can enter to simply watch those participating or play in the simulation sandbox, which is essentially the DVD game (without the plush at the end).

BONUS: In classic fashion, for an additional charge, you can add personalized Hawaiian attire and accessories (such as a custom-finished surfboard) to your plush alien OR pay for the Jumba PhotoPass, which can insert your little friend into any Disney PhotoPass image you take during the course of your stay.

The Magical Library

Nestled in the heart of Fantasyland’s Storybook Village at (Blue Sky) Disneyland, this multi-level, candlelit library is the place to go for books about - and other trinkets and treasures inspired by - Disney’s animated classics. Interactive displays and optical illusions are abound at every corner and in every nook and cranny of this place, while the shelves are adorned with props from every film represented as an attraction of some sort within the land...and many more!

Bonus
At the Magical Library, one unique product that guests can buy is a pop-up book depicting scenes from the major or most popular attractions in this take on Fantasyland.

BITS AND BITES GAMES AND ARCADE

Part of the Disney Springs experience is bigger, more family-friendly, and more Disney versions of traditional mall shops, and this is the Disney version of a game store, either Gamestop or more mom-and-pop places. Replacing Planet Hollywood's plot is a two-story shop, the ground floor is themed after the airy but comfortable Game Central Station, selling modern games and gaming related merchandise, both Disney and third party, all family friendly (E to T) so as to not offend any parents. The floor up the blue and black painted escalators is a retro arcade themed to Tron of also family friendly games, particularly Disney and Marvel ones with a pay once free play system similar to many arcades currently built, with nostalgic blacklight lighting, 80's and 90's music, and posters of Disney Afternoon and shows from the time period to add to the atmosphere.

Bonus:
One flagship product of Bits and Bytes is the Classic Kingdom LCD games, classic Mickey Mouse shorts adapted into small, inexpensive, and long lasting portables sure to make the ride home a little more magical and fun.

Lumalee - yes, the nihilistic guy from the animated movie - invites guests to a wondrous store full of colourful merchandise, but also an enormous planetary model which can be adjusted and interacted with. Thanks for all the great submissions! I'll be looking through, working on reviews, results, etc.

A bit of housekeeping...

I'll drop the track 6 today/tomorrow and track 7 likely to start next Sun/Mon. That one will last a little bit longer as I'll be at WDW over Thanksgiving, so will pick up reviews for it when I'm back and then we'll wind up the last few challenges in December a week or so before holidays are in full swing.

Right off the bat going with a park that does not technically exist yet. I like it. As much as I’m looking forward to EU, I do worry that it will be a number of years, after the first expansion or two that is in the works, before the park feels like it’s fully fleshed out or at least enough there capable of handling a day’s guests. While that is more so on the attraction front, I think it makes sense to put in plenty of highly themed shopping/dining environments to filter guests around. Building out the Mario Kart world makes sense even if I wish the attraction was a little higher octane.

Bonus (+1) – I think I’ve seen a Mario Kart RC Track (maybe I’m misremembering), but it fits, and I don’t think what I remember was nearly themed enough. I had an RC kit as a kid, and I played the heck out of that thing.

More Muppets, or at least a bit more enhancing the area. Thank you. I have zero clue why this space sits unused except for special events. Hard not to think that Disney purposely tanks things just so they can say they have a valid reason to close or not reopen them. Muppets and Stage One are on that list. There are a number of prime characters missing apt representation in this area, and Gonzo of course is on that list. Pizzarizzo seemed a prime spot to include him in an enhanced set up, but I digress. Merging Gonzo with Museum of the Weird inspiration seems like a shop I could easily explore and not buy anything as you noted. Great set up with the random character pop ins, etc.

Bonus (+1) A gonzo book!? Hello my coffee table.

Speaking of unused space…..Does Disney realize many of their fans really like Stitch? I think not. If you won’t put an attraction where SGE was, then why not a shop themed to Stitch of course. There are so many unique looking aliens from the film it’s easy to picture this, and you’ve made this almost into a walkthrough/shop experience which is a draw even if you aren’t paying to build. Now that I think about it, is Magic Kingdom the only park that does not have the opportunity to buy/build/name your own pal/shoulder buddy? AK has the ikrans, Epcot the Groot/Remy shoulder puppets and DHS the droid workshop. Probably missing something at MK so it’s a good call out and an easy way to utilize this space and still make it worth venturing in.

Bonus (+1) An upcharge is absolutely classic fashion but works to fully customize your plush.

Now we are off to a park that exists, only in the written format. Nice. A bookstore is not for everyone, but magical bookstore, er library, now we are talking (though I would be just fine in either). While I don’t know how much of a draw this would be for the masses, I could really see this being one of those spaces you would need to explore and experience to know how good a diversion it could be. The props and interactive displays are a nice touch to engage kids. I could see this being a unique place just to explore the levels and all the nooks and crannies you have noted.

Bonus (+1) A good pop-up book hits ride at kid me who still has several from his childhood, including an Empire Strikes Back one that doesn’t pop or slide in most places anymore from too much use.

Not a theme park per se, but part of the broader themed resort, so a nice diversion heading over to Disney Springs. Admittedly, I have not been to Disney Springs since they rethemed it. Just can’t bring myself to take time from the parks or resorts to fool with it since there’s really nothing there appealing to me. Would this do it? With its bits of Disney Quest, GameStop, Wreck it Ralph and merch. If nothing else, I’d be intrigued to pop over and at least see it once. Who am I kidding, I might get lost in the retro arcade games area. Love the name, seems like a cool place to poke around, even if you were not buying something.

Bonus (+1) Simple games from a simpler time never go out of style. Great little keepsake for the ride home.

Nice diversity with your theme parks hopping over to Abu Dhabi and Warner Brothers park. Would have loved to see a highly interactive Scooby Doo shop here, but I am always down for anything Hanna-Barbera. As you said, there are a few other HB stores, but one selling general merch for the broader brand is not a bad thing.

Another Epic Universe shop but going in a different direction and expanding the Nintendo brand a bit from what will already be in the Nintendo land. This idea works on many levels with easy tie-ins to both Nintendo land, and the whole idea of Epic Universe and Celestial Park with the galaxy references. Love the idea of all the hidden characters around the ship and can imagine the planetary model being a great photo op and draw.

We Can Work it Out

A couple of years before Penny Lane's release came We Can Work it Out, dropping late in 1965. Reaching #1 in numerous countries, it ended up being one of the highest selling singles of the 60's in the UK. The title is pretty self-explanatory for the tune itself with the band once again reflecting on personal experience, in this case Paul's relationship with his current girlfriend.

In today's theme park world, rights and IP issues can always make things a bit sticky. We have streaming services and studio consolidation to thank for that. This is no more evident stateside than with Disney and Universal. Disney inherited the insanely weird Marvel rights in certain parts of the country that makes Orlando in particular confusing for the everyday guest that isn't in the know. Let's assume though, that Disney and Universal do work it out, Marvel speaking in this case.

The First Avenger

In an alternate universe where Universal Orlando's management decides to add something more original rather than a Transformers ride in 2012, The First Avenger, a dark ride themed to one of the first (I think) MCU film opens instead. This ride uses the same technology as Transformers, and it retells the story of how Captain America became a superhero (though with most of the controversial elements removed) using impressive sound and visual effects. Despite Disney owning Marvel, this ride was eventually cloned to Universal Japan in 2015, with Transformers being saved for Orlando’s upcoming third park.

Bonus:

At the end of the ride, Nick Fury makes a cameo, referencing the Avengers movie and his appearance in the post-credits scenes of most early MCU films.

Wakandan Warrior Hunt
Universal finally brings the land of Wakanda to life with a large-scale addition to Marvel Super-Hero Island, anchored by the tentpole attraction Wakandan Warrior Hunt, a EMV-jeep style ride through the jungles of Africa featuring Chadwick Boseman's iconic portrayal of the character. Using archival audio, CGI, and animatronics, Boseman as the Black Panther assists you on an adventure pitting you against the formidable Kraven the Hunter, who seeks vibranium, but also is on the hunt FOR YOU in the deep dark jungle (kind of like the Carnotaurus in my dear soon-to-be-departed Dinosaur attraction down the road). This finally gives Black Panther an attraction that can serve as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman without ever feeling dated or forced.

WandaVision: The Show
1732566719610.png

WandaVision: The Show replaces Storm Force Acceleration at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. This family-friendly live show (with some semblance to Disney’s Carousel of Progress) is stylized after the engaging, early episodes of the Disney+ series (yes, pretty incredible that Universal won the theme park rights) on the family of Wanda & Vision (along with Agatha) prior to the discovery of the witches. Each scene is set in a different decade–from the 1950s to modern times.

1732566643766.png

Bonus: S.W.O.R.D. agent Monti makes an appearance at the door of Wanda’s house in the same special role as in the series–as a circus strongman.

Avengers - The Battle Of Superhero Island

IMG_9629.jpeg

The long-abandoned Toon Lagoon Amphitheater has finally been replaced with a expansion of Marvel Superhero Island, with the iconic Avengers Tower standing as the entrance to a E-Ticket based around the first Avengers movie made from 2012 (This was made possible due to Universal making a compromise with Disney to keep using the classic Marvel characters while the modern ones remain under the hands of the mouse house). The ride revolves around the final battle scene from the movie as we join Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, & Hawkeye (let me know if I got the characters wrong) as we help them defeat the robot invasion and save Superhero Island. The ride
acts as a spiritual successor to Alien Attack over at Universal Studios Florida next door.
