Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy Shelved?

Not the greatest overlay in the world but still a fun change up to the ride. Anyone know why it was shelved and if it's ever coming back?

If it is truly gone, then it is a passing worthy of note. Ghost Galaxy debuted alongside Disney's push for the Halloween crowd, but held the distinction of the only attraction that tried to be actually scary. It even got a jump out of a friend of mine! I have never ridden Monsters After Dark, but from youtube observation it seems no more frightening than the standard version. I'm forced to agree with the criticisms of the ride preceding my post, but I didn't mind it despite its obvious low impact execution.

Monsters After Dark feels unfinished. It's literally one Monster in the ride yet the preshow talks about tons of Monsters and how we're there to attract them. The title also implies we need more Monsters.

I agree I like the actual scare factor they tried to implement with Ghost Galaxy. I especially like the glitching/lighting on the building itself and the queue.

If they were to redo the in ride effects and soundtrack it could truly be stellar.

Hot takes: Ghost Galaxy was bad actually, so I'm super glad if it's gone for good.

Also, the rabid acceptance of Hyperspace Mountain ensures that one of these days the regular Space Mountain will simply cease to be and it'll just be Hyperspace or some other IP version forever.

Hyperspace Mountain has already been permanent in Paris and Hong Kong for years and you just KNOW they're itching for the day when they feel like they can finally get away with it in California too.

Perhaps, but it certainly doesn’t help that the regular ride lacks visual interest.

You go to space, it's weird, there's stars. What else of visual interest needs to be there?

For me its beauty is in its simplicity. I don't need lasers, ghosts, or other distractions that do little but further expose how boring the coaster would be without the darkness. I like it precisely the way it is.

Fair enough, but as I'm sure you know the original version had a satellite and projections of comets, meteors and planets. I couldn't tell you why all of that went away, but that was the way I liked it.

I do seem to remember more projections before Hyperspace regularly became a thing. Not really sure how much of that is anti-Hyperspace bias and how much of it is fact, but that was my perception.

Not seeing the meteor cookie at the top of the 2nd lift is not something that bothers me since to me it always looked cheesy.

Obviously they could and should do better to do it all properly, but I would absolutely take the ride in its exact current state over Hyperspace each and every time.

I beg your pardon, but I do not remember any projections after the major refurbishment. I do remember getting off the ride after it had reopened and thinking to myself: "Stars? That's all?" The original version of the ride had real character. You are right of course, the original projections were terribly dated by the time the ride closed. I just was, and am, stunned that they added none of that back. I wouldn't care for a permanent Hyperspace Mountain either, but the ride could use something.

Hmm. It would be interesting to find a good POV of the original ride so I could get a better sense of what is missing, since I gather you're talking about the pre-2005 version and I have no real recollection of that (other than thinking that California surfer guitar music in space was weird but not in a good way).

If anyone knows of one, please link away. Maybe I just don't fully understand what was lost.

There are some videos out there on youtube or other places, but as with many older rides that are dark the cameras of the time that captured them couldn't really show it off well.

When Space Mountain reopened in 2005, there were lots of projections. There was a space station, a comet, swirling galaxy and asteroid hitting each other. It all kind of disappeared when Ghost Galaxy happened. It is like they never turned those projections on again. You can see them in one of the older Hong Kong Disneyland Space Mountain videos since they got the same package. The difference being, they lit their center asteroid and Disneyland never did.

I totally forgot about this. You are right.

I really miss how the lights in the beginning tunnel made a really cool illusion.
