The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon
Coming in 2018, an all new, state of the art attraction will be coming to the most visited vacation destination on the Earth. For this challenge in Session 5 of The Creator Games, contestants were tasked with creating an all-new attraction for a country in World Showcase at Epcot.
Which leads me to introduce:
The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon!
The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon will be an all-new interactive hybrid attraction that will become an all-new headliner at Epcot.
In addition, The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon will celebrate the beauty and wonder of Chinese mythology, nature, innovation and culture.
NOTE: Reflections of China will be closed in order to make way for this state of the art attraction.
Location
The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon will be located in Epcot’s China Pavilion. The show building of the attraction will be located in the place of the large building currently behind China. This building will be relocated elsewhere in the park.
Backstory
Guests will be immersed in the story of The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon while experiencing the attraction. This story will put guests in the middle of a Chinese museum that features an exhibit with an ancient Chinese artifact, a chest in fact, as it’s main draw. Guests of the park have been formally invited by the director of the museum to attend the opening of the chest and to be one of the first to see the ancient contents of the chest.
Façade
The façade of the attraction will remain the same as it currently is. The only change that will be made is the marquee out front that tells guests what the attraction it.
Ride Vehicles
The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon will not feature a set ride system like most attractions at the Walt Disney World Resort. It will begin as a theater in the round attraction and then split off into a line of individual vehicles that will move through the attraction. These individual vehicles are boats, as a portion of the dark ride section of the attraction will be on the water. Then, the vehicles will return to another theater to finish the attraction.
Queue
Following with the museum theme of the backstory, the queue of The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon will feature many different replicas of ancient Chinese artifacts such as life-size Terracotta Warriors and inventions created in the times of Ancient China.
In addition, the queue will feature living paintings that showcase the different aspects of Chinese culture that come to life in vibrant ways such as the water beginning to rush through a depicted river or an inventor wiping sweat off of his face after a long day’s work.

Each section of the theater is shaped like a ship, each with different colors and a varied design.
The lights dim as a soft, voice of the museum director begins to speak.
“Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to our wonderful museum. Today you are here to witness a monumental event, a historic event. You will see the opening of an ancient chest that we have dated all the way back to the Shang Dynasty.”
A hole in the floor in the middle of the room opens. Out of it, rises a stand holding a very old chest. This chest in covered in old markings and is coated in a thick layer of dust.
“This is the ancient chest that we have named The Box of Fucanglong. Fucanglong is the dragon of treasure. We found this a very suitable name, considering this box is a piece of ancient treasure.”
The stand holding the box begins to spin clockwise, allowing the guests to get a full view of the chest. The lid begins to slowly open, revealing a glowing pearl sitting in the middle of the box.
Now, an ominous, booming voice begins to speak.
“I am Fucanglong, the dragon of Treasure. You have disturbed my sacred chest that holds my most values possession… the Pearl of China. This pearl holds all of China’s greatest secrets, beauty and wonder. For opening it, you now have access to the land of… China.”
The seats begin to spin the opposite direction of the box, counterclockwise. Using projections, the walls, ceiling and floor come to life, changing to match every sentence that Fucanglong says.
“China’s beauty and wonder come from four, very important aspects of our land. Nature, helps the land be beautiful and alive year in and year out. Innovation, allows us to move forward and sometimes move back at the same time. Mythology, gives us the power to imagine and have faith in others and ourselves. And finally, culture aids us in keeping the spirit of our people alive from one year to the next. These four aspects of China help form The Legend of the Dragon. This Legend allows our society to thrive and live peacefully with all species of animal, creature and plant. However, if one aspect of the Legend of the Dragon falls apart, it could be disastrous. However, now that you have learned that, why don’t you experience the Legend of the Dragon for yourselves.”
The walls around the room disappear as the seats continue to rotate. However, one by one, each section (represented by different boats) of the theater moves away, along a specific path. This is where the paths from the two theaters meet.
The ships move along a pathway in a green-filled tunnel. However, these boats soon dip down into a river. The boats emerge in a large room features a lush, landscape. This room features rushing waterfalls, many different species of vegetation and a variety of animatronic animals such as Giant Pandas, Monkeys, Tigers and Mongooses.
A projected sky above the heads of guests allows for an even more realistic experience. In addition, the voice of Fucanglong is now piped through speakers in the ride vehicle.
“This is the landscape of China. From lush vegetation to thriving wildlife, the jungles and forests live in harmony with each other. Of course, many of the dragons of China watch over the landscape. Dilong, the dragon of the Earth and Jiaolong the dragon of the sea aid in this supervision. Shenlong, the dragon of rain also helps the nature of China stay intact.”
The boat now moves into a dark room, where it rises out of the water and will now travel on land and through the sky.
Guests now move into a new, smaller room that features an inventor’s workshop.
“This is the innovation of China. Countless, inventors strive to keep society moving forward. From the invention of fireworks…”
Fireworks burst outside of the window.
“… to the invention of the cast iron pot that allows for an easier day to day life. Without the innovation of new inventions, China would be nowhere, without all of the progress that has been made in the past centuries.”
Guests move away from the inventor’s room and into a different one. This new room is larger than the innovation room but smaller than the nature room. This room is themed to culture. A small town square is displayed, and many animatronic people are celebrating. Using projections, fireworks light up the sky and other effects come to life using this projection technology.
“This is the culture of China. China’s culture features the aspects of ceramics, architecture, music, literature, martial arts, cuisine, visual arts, and religion. All of these together form the culture of China. Kui, the inventor of music and dance watches over the citizens of the world. From traditional Chinese cuisine to the sounds of soothing music, our society would fall apart without this key component of The Legend of the Dragon.”
The guests exit into a new room, the largest in the attraction. This new room makes it seem that the guests are flying in the air. Projected clouds in a projected sky swirl around the guests as they move throughout the room.
“This is the mythology of China. The aspect of The Legend of the Dragon holds together the stories, literature and music of the land. Throughout the land of mythology, Fusang, the tree of the world grows into the clouds. This tree, with its roots, holds down China and keeps it grounded while the branches and leaves allow it to grow and reach towards the sky.”
However, suddenly, the tree to turn unhealthy shades of color and the leaves begin to fall.
With that, the guests move into another, different theater in the round theater. In the middle, is an dying, animatronic tree.
“However, with great power comes great responsibility. Every 10,000 years, the leaves and branches of the trees fall to the earth, leaving it bare. When the tree falls into this depressing state, it leaves the nature, mythology, innovation and culture of China lifeless as well. The Legend of the Dragon keeps the tree alive, as the power of the four aspects of the legend overpower the overcoming death of the tree. This allows the tree to grow new leaves and branches, which represents that constant change of the landscape, mythology, innovation and culture of China.”
With this, the tree in the center magically grows new leaves. Once this has happened, the tree sinks into the floor. Then, the Box of Fucanglong appears through the floor and closed, shutting the magic pearl inside.
“It is here, my great listeners, where I leave you. Just remember, when you see the landscape of China, the inventions of China, the stories and mythology of China or the culture of China, it’s The Legend of the Dragon that has kept it alive.”
The museum director speaks up once more.
“Well, we now know something new and wonderful about the nation of China. Now, let’s explore China itself. Thank you for visiting the museum and we hope to see you again soon.”
Guests then exit the theater and out into Epcot. The boat themed seats then exit the theater and move into the other theater where the ride begins.
Thank you for visiting The Voyage of China: Legend of the Dragon. This excited and wonderful new attraction will add a new, needed and exciting new attraction to not just Epcot, but the entire Walt Disney World Resort as well.
