Rode almost a month ago and they were gone and I've seen others mentioning they have been missing recently. Did their new home not work out? What's going in their spot if they don't come back?

I was there last weekend and saw one zebra in the far off distance just before the elephants. But they were definitely not out where people could really see them.

We were there in early February and the guide told us to watch for zebras in the new area, but there were none to be seen.
Same. Was there at around the same time. Went into "Zebra Falls" and lo and behold, no zebras. Think it made the end of the safari really really flat feeling, and this is from someone who loves the safari.

Me too!:( In September the CM said there would be a new Zebra habitat coming soon: although I believe he said it in a different way to "fit" the safari experience.

I saw zebras in the new location on January 20th. For clarification, the new area is at the end of the attraction. Occasionally they can also be seen in a small clearing before you turn right into the larger elephant area. The clearing is part of a much larger offstage area that held the zebras.

I don't know if true or just CM talking smack, but they told us the Zebra weren't getting along in that area. I didn't know if that means temporary or the idea is dead.
This is true. Or it was at least before the ride was recently redone. If you're a CM at DAK and you ever get the chance to go behind DAK on the actually road the whole park is pretty impressive to see.. exp. the safari area. If I recall, the safari land takes up like 1/2 the park or something like that. lol

Keep in mind they have a limited number of animals, regardless of what they are... And they are free to roam their allotted space. However, Disney does try to coax them into areas where they can be seen - by stashing their food and water in the landscaping. Perhaps try hitting the ride twice; earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon to increase your chances of seeing all beasties.

I rode about two weeks ago and the driver said the zebras were "coming soon." I just assumed they were never out because we didn't see them at New Years either.
