Houston authorities are trying to determine the cause of a deadly elevator malfunction that decapitated a physician - and left a female worker trapped inside with the severed head.
The woman was recovering yesterday after being treated for shock a day after Saturday's horrific incident at Christus St. Joseph hospital.
Investigators say the elevator doors jammed closed on Dr. Hitoshi Nikaidoh as he entered the car Saturday morning, pinning his shoulders.
The elevator car then shot upward, severing his head.
The woman, who was not identified, was stuck inside the elevator for about 15 minutes until firefighters could free her.
Medical personnel were crying and in disbelief when emergency workers arrived, Houston police Sgt. Kenneth Perkins told the Houston Chronicle.
"They were trying to console one another," he said. "Just to see other people in disarray - the looks on their faces pretty much told the whole story."
Hospital spokeswoman India Chumney Hancock said yesterday the elevator bank has been taken out of service while the investigation continues.
Elevator expert Charles Buckman said he'd never heard of an elevator malfunctioning like the one in Houston.
'Whole bunch of safeguards'
"That kind of accident is almost nonexistent," he said. "There are a whole bunch of safeguards to prevent the elevator running without the doors being closed."
Nikaidoh, a resident who was on duty, was planning to become a Christian missionary, the Houston Chronicle reported.
He was born in Japan and was voted by his classmates at University of Texas-Houston Medical School as epitomizing the qualities of a good doctor. "
