Worth Visiting Disneyland in 2016?

Hi all,

My family has been to WDW twice, in 2014 and 2015. We were considering vacation destinations this year, and one idea that came up, due to a potentially good deal on flights, was visiting Disneyland and DCA. However, with all the closures at Disneyland due to Star Wars Land construction, I wonder if we will be disappointed in missing some of the attracts that will be closed? We enjoy a lot of the classic aspects of Disney, and would be exciting to visit where Walt once walked. Wife and son enjoy the thrill rides, while daughter and I are more geared to the shows, parades, and the small thrills rides. :)

So, is it worth visiting this year, or should we wait until the Rivers of America is open again? The railroad and Fantasmic! are two things I know I'd be feel a bit disappointed in not seeing. In that case, do we visit WDW again, or (gasp!) are there any suggestions of places where we should expand our vacationing to? What I really like about WDW, and I'm assuming DLR, is the quality, the stories, and that though the ticket price is a bit steep, there's something to do all day and you don't have to pay extra if you don't want to!

Thanks for your input!

I'd vote come anyway. Fantasmic and the Railroad will be back next year and that gives you a great excuse to return.

We're only able to go to DL every few years, and this is our year.

If it's between WDW this year and DL, I'd go to DL. MK has less construction going on than DL park, yes. DHS will have a lot of construction for the next few years and, to be honest, will be impacted much more than DL. So unless you're like me and you can come in and be happy with riding the same four rides a bunch of times and then leaving, you probably won't get much out of it. Avatarland also hasn't opened at AL. DL also has so much to do that the construction work on a few rides isn't going to impact you more than just, "Oh, we didn't get to do that, bummer" which will happen with something regardless of when you go. Last time, we didn't get to do BTM because of construction. The first trip, we missed Snow White's Scary Adventures. But it didn't bother us, nor should the closures terribly impact you. There's enough else to do over there that you won't terribly miss out. I'd say go to DL this year, and then go back to WDW in a year or two. You could get an AP and then visit DL two years in a row, and then go back to WDW in 2018, if you really wanted to see Fantasmic and the railroad.

At DL, yes there is some construction, but there's none at DCA. Personally, my first trip to DL was when DCA was under a major enhancement, and we still had a wonderful time in both parks. Then we came back several years later and got to enjoy it again, minus the construction and with the new enhancements, so it was something to look forward to.

DL also has a lot of exciting stuff going on right now. They're still celebrating their 60th anniversary. There's a new parade called Paint the Night, which, to be honest, I'm not a parade person, and I want to see that. Space Mountain currently has a Star Wars overlay. Soarin' will be getting the same updated film as WDW. Star Tours is basically the same as at WDW (although it's mirror image and only has four speeders instead of six, which means the line moves a bit more slowly, so you can't usually jump on it five times in a row like you sometimes can in WDW because the line moves so quickly), and there have been some new scenes added to that. They just opened a new attraction in Carsland. Speaking of Carsland, it is completely amazing and you really should see it. You'll also get to

Now, if you're really eager to see something going on specifically at WDW, such as the new Frozen attraction, the new nighttime show at AK, the Star Wars stuff at DHS (fyi, the Star Wars fireworks were amazing, and they are making them longer, which was our only complaint in January. Easily better than Frozen fireworks, and rivaling Wishes and Illuminations), then by all means, go to WDW and save DL for next year. But there's a lot of great stuff going on at DL, and DLR overall is just a ton of fun.

And you also should really venture outside DL, even if your primary reason for going is DL, and see SoCal. We really liked San Diego Zoo. This time, we're planning on visiting San Diego to follow our baseball team (Orioles are visiting San Diego while we're there). There's also beaches, other amusement parks, and just some other cool stuff to do.
