Worst WDW weather?

What's the worst weather experience you've had at WDW?

I went one late summer, early fall, and it was hot out. Very very hot and muggy. Then around 4pm it got really windy. I mean if there were tumble weeds they'd be tumbling and the blustery day looked tame in comparison.

The sky got dark, but it was still warm, then the rain started. We were in Adventureland. It was pelting torrential downpour rain, and it was ice cold. It was going sideways and blowing in the wind too, so no cover besides a full interior was safe, and Adventureland doesn't really have any of those. We got a dole whip thinking we'd wait it out, but tossed it after a few bites because we were shivering because the rain was so cold.

After about an hour of torrential downpour, we decided to try and make it out of the park. Mainstreet was flooded to our ankles in some areas, and it was still pouring rain. We got out to the monorail and ferry boat area - we waded through the water, which was moreso about shin to knee height in some places, and waves were crashing over the seawalls. We went to the ferry, stood there about 15mins, before they told us the ferries were not running because of how bad the storm was, the water was too choppy.

So, in the rain we had to now run across to the monorail, which had a huge line out in the rain because the park was essentially being abandoned (it was open until like 10pm, and it was only 5:30).

The seats on the monorail were soaking wet and everyone inside was in a poncho or soaked, and the heat was on so it was sickly sorta muggy. The ambient temperature was like 80's or so, but the rain was sooo cold.

We road a soggy tram ride back to the car. We took my friend's car to my car parked at Downtown Disney West Side outside Virgin Mega. The water in the parking lot was again ankle to shin high, and my car wouldn't turn over. I ended up spending the night at my friend's place in Orlando. In the morning we returned to try my car again, and it worked and there were about 10 other people there too. Disney had set up cones around our vehicles as they had all flooded and died.

I've since seen them shut down that part of the parking lot when it starts to rain excessively.

Well since we can only go in the summer, we are used to the daily torrential downpour. Actually my family and I were just talking about this today - most times we get stuck in Epcot in Japan in the rainstorms! Perfect opportunity to get more shopping done ;)

Worst weather was last summer, we were driving our rental back to the airport and the hurricane caught up to us... it was only a 5 minute wave of it but we could not see ANYTHING on the road - truly the scariest moment of our lives, we really thought we were going to run off the road or something. We just kept praying and keeping my mom calm (she was driving) and the wave passed. The only moment I really was thinking I was going to die!

Needless to say, we are very happy to be using Magical Express this year

2 years ago i was at blizzard beach, during a mamoth thunderstorm, that should be thunderstorms, there were about 3 of them and it was as if they were circling us, they were right on top of us, the rain on the ground must have been at least 2 inches deep. 1 bolt of lightning actually hit the conductor on top of summit plummet. the weird thing was it came and went within like 20mins. it scared the **** out of me  .oh and last year i was in florida when, i think it was katrina, scraped florida and went on to tragically ravage new orleans.

I was at Disneyworld for Christmas in 1989 when it was actually warmer in Anchorage, Alaska(32 degrees) than it was at Disney(28 degrees). I had actually brought clothing for colder temps but I felt bad for everyone else that were still in shorts. I have only gone to Disneyworld around Christmas but I decided this year to go in May when I know it will be warm since I hate the cold weather.

Went In late Nov. for five days several years ago, it rained every day for most of each day, it stopped at night. it was cool and miserable. It turned sunny and warm the day we left. A bright note. We were walking in the pouring rain past Canada and a CM was standing outside in the rain with out a rain coat greeting everyone. I commented to him that he shoiuld be inside out of the weather. he said If you can be out in the rain, the least I can do is be out here with you to make your day better. It did make my day. :animwink:

When I last visited the World in 2005, it was pretty cold and somewhat rainy and cloudy. It wasn't the weather I was hoping for, but thankfully it warmed up towards the end of the trip. I was able to use the slide at the main pool in Old Key West, but I was hoping for the weather to change so I could go to one of the water parks...SIGH.

Sincerely,

But the CM was getting paid while you were paying for the same experience.

I've always had perfect weather for my WDW trips. Its funny, because I have tons of horrible weather stories for my trips to other parks across the country.

Hurricane Charley....although the weather for the rest of that tip was tpical august.

I have gone for the past 7 years, every August, and in August it is so hot, with torential rain at least once a day....no more after Charley...THen we started going at Christmas, but that is iffy too...one year it was beautiful, one year rainy...last year, it was ok. But no more Christmas for us. While it is festive and all, it is way too crowded.

I just got back two weeks ago, and the weather was perfect..altho it was still crowded. Last year, we went after easter and that was great weather and no crowds.

Now that DD is a freshman in college, she is out in May...so we are switching to early May....hopefully it will be great weather and low crowds.

August 13th (Friday, btw)2004.....Hurricane Charley. Then, the next trip was in September of the same year.....Hurricane Jeanne. Never felt safer during a hurricane. I live in central Florida, & have decided that if I have to evacuate from a hurricane, I will try to get a room at one of the Disney resorts.

We have been to WDW so many times that I have lost count. Our Worst (but coolest) weather ever experienced was last October when Wilma hit Florida. We had tickets to the MNSSHP on Sunday night, Oct 23, 2005. We had AD ressies for Tony's Town Square. I had never eaten there and since we had already paid for the tickets we decided to go anyway, even with the imminent threat of rain.

We requested a seat on the patio so that we could watch the activities and hear the music of the MNSSHP. Well the rain began and the parade was cancelled. We didn't know it, but we were still in for quite a show. The rain began to pour down and lightning began to strike all over the place.

With it being the MNSSHP - it couldn't have been better if Disney had planned it that way. We ended up staying at Tony's a while until the storm let up some. I have never seen the park open with so little people.

Aack! We were flying out of Orlando that day Charlie hit.....we were on the runway, trees bending over and all I kept thinking was "Please take-off, please take-off....". Then the pilot revved down the engines and my heart sank. Few minutes later we caught a lull and took off....we were one of the last flights to get out....phew!

Three times come to mind:

NYE 1997-98. It was the first time we had gone to the parks for that holiday (MK), and it got down under 30. We were in shorts and t-shirts. We bought sweatshirts but were still freezing. It was a wonderful night at the end (got a central position on MS to see the fireworks).

July 17, 2002. This was the infamous day Epcot's transformer housing blew up and sparked a fire in the backup and the park closed. Unfortunately, working at The Land, we had to save all the plants since the systems are all electronic and automated. Naturally, it was an extremely hot day, so the greenhouses maxed out the 120 mark on the thermometers.

NYE 2002-03. I had started working at 7:30 AM and got held over twice (so finally got to leave at 11:30PM). A fairly large storm rolled in around 5:00 PM, so guests were all soaked. It looked like it was lightening up, and I closed down the Greenhouses at about 11:00. At that time, I had to walk around the outside to check all the door locks and then wait for the bus. Naturally, as soon as I stepped outside, the heavens absolutely opened into a huge summer-worthy thunderstorm. By the time I finally got on the backstage bus and to my car, I was soaked and had trouble driving. I finally got out of cast parking a bit after midnight and got stuck in traffic leaving all the parks in heavy rain so that no one could see anything.

On New Year's eve 2002 I was down with my Marching Band, and it started to thunder and lightning. For some reason, the band parents tried to round us up so we could leave (but why! Disney is still fun in the rain!) However, two groups of students did not hear the announcement, and were still out in the park. So the rest of the band had to wait in the Tomorrowland fast food restaurant for 7 hours! Our night ended when the fireworks went up, and we actually got to see them...and then the other groups magically reappeared. But, when we went to board the bus, it didn't arrive for another hour, and on the the band members began to get some trench foot symptoms...It was a very memorable New Years Eve.

Our first trip together to Disney (June 1996), we were driving from the airport to the hotel and the rain was SO HARD that we had to pull over and sit on the side of the road for 10-15 minutes. It was scary because the rain sounded like hail and we couldn't see a thing but it finally ended and we were on our way...

Another time in July 2003 we were in Epcot when the clouds rolled in and it started lightning. Everyone was waiting around for Illuminations to start and even with the thunder and lightning everyone just stood there!! My husband and I looked at each other and hauled a$& from the Mexico Pavillion all the way to the Y&B Club. Literally, just as we walked in the door, the pour-down started. The entire hallway near the restaurants at the Beach Club was flooding. We ordered dinner in and it was actually kind of romantic with the rain and thunder. We felt safe inside and enjoyed watching all the people who stayed too long at Epcot coming back looking like wet dogs! Hilarious.

March 1993 : Huge snowstorm hits the day we were leaving from Philly. Flight cancelled, airport closed. Back to the airport the next day to wait for the first flights. Wait all day for a flight and get on with stop over in Atlanta to Daytona (could not get a flight to Orlando). Wait in Atlanta 2-3 hours then arrive in Daytona about 2:00am. Rent van and drive to Orlando and get there just before the sunrise. Three old niece awake the entire time and very chatty-this trip begins her lifelong fear of public toliets since I did not warn her that the toliet on the plane would flush so loudly. Spends next 10 years of her life screaming "don't flush until I leave in every public restroom I take her in". Bus driver at Disney tells us this is the coldest March he can remember and he had been at Disney for almost 20 years. Spent the entire trip freezing my butt off. A picture of me huddled on a bench in a hooded sweatshirt and shorts waiting form my niece to ride Dumbo for 1 1/2 pretty much sums up the whole trip.

Last summer, July-August, it rained every day my son and I were there. We just decided to don hats and keep on walking around. It was a great way to cool off. I remember watching local news and all the comments about it being the second wettest July on record, coming close to being the wettest. We had to leave a day early because of Hurricane Dennis. Interstate 10 was a parking lot all the way back to Louisiana. What fun!

Then, in October, a friend and I were there for Wilma. We stood in the rain at that other park (:D ) for HHNs and I got a call from WDW dining informing me that our lunch at Cinderella's Castle might not happen. It didn't, but the park was open by around noon. Very breezy and cooler, but the CMs were great and the lines practically were non-existent.
