Woody Does WDW.

Well, my wife and I decided to go to WDW for a long weekend. We made reservations at the AKL on 9/21/05 and drove down on 9/22/05. The Love Bugs are out now, so I put a few extra coats of wax on the front of the car. It worked perfectly! We ran through some rain showers on I-75 and the Florida Turnpike so by the time we got to WDW, the Love Bugs were all washed away.

Driving down was not too bad, just the usual assortment of freaks that decide to drive 70 MPH in the left lane. They're easy to dodge. I reported the most egregious to the FHP via cell phone for obstructing traffic and heard on the scanner that 3 of them had indeed been stopped by FHP. Two got verbals but one guy had a revoked DL, so he made a trip to the cross bar motel. I keep *347 (FHP) permanently as a one touch number in my cell phone book.

I parked in the main parking lot at the AKL and went inside with my wife to register. Registration was quick and I went outside to get our bags. As I opened up the trunk of my car, a man came over to me with a set of jumper cables in his hand and asked me if I would jump off his vehicle. I took a quick look at the cable set he had and noticed they were very low grade and inexpensive cables. I told him that I was willing to give him a jump but only if I used my own set of cables. I moved my car over to his vehicle (2004 Toyota Camry) and I pulled out my jumper cables (4 gauge, 16 feet long).

Before I connected the cables, I used a screwdriver to pop off the caps on his battery. I noticed that all 6 cells were low on water and 1 cell was almost completely dry. I keep a gallon of distilled water in my trunk, so I filled up each of his battery cells to the proper level and then jumped his car off. I told him to let his car run at high idle for about 20 minutes to charge up the battery. He and his wife were also guests at the AKL, so I gave him my room number and told him to give me a call if he needed any additional help. I then got our bags and headed for our room!

After we changed clothes and freshened up, we decided we wanted to go to The Mara for dinner. Just a word for those of you that don't know, my wife and I do not eat big meals. We normally eat about 5 or 6 small meals per day. An apple is a good lunch for us! Just as we were about to walk out the door, our room phone rang. We knew our children or family would call via cell phone, so we were a little puzzled about getting a call. It was the guy I had given the help with his car. He invited us to dinner at Jiko! I explained to him that my wife and I are not big eaters (i.e. we could split an appetizer and still have leftovers) but he insisted. I told him my wife had a headache, so perhaps another time. Thank goodness, he relented.

My wife and I decided to go to DTD and eat at The Earl of Sandwich. We got The Original and split it and I drank a little of The Earl's Grey Lemonade and my wife drank the rest. It was all very good! When you place your order at The Earl of Sandwich and pay, they give you a number and you find a seat and wait until your number is called to pick up your order. It's a good system except that on this trip, some little lady with a small voice was announcing the numbers and no one could hear her! She had 8 orders stacked up and kept yelling them out but her voice was so small even the people directly in front of her couldn't hear her. I started to call out the numbers for her. "213, 214, 216, 217, 215, 218...." Within a few seconds, all the orders had been picked up. The poor lady just wasn't cut out to call out numbers in a loud restaurant!

Another detail about paying for our meal. We had our AKL room key cards set up for all payments while on property. However, I still had some Disney Dollars left over from 2 trips ago that I wanted to spend first. It was $20.00 worth. I gave the Disney Dollars to the lady at the register and she looked back at me and said (with a sarcastic smirk), "Is this real money?" I told her to show it to her manager. After some "examination", my Disney Dollars were approved for my purchase. Those were the last of my Disney Dollars. I plan to never buy them again.

Darn! I forgot to tell you about our drive over to DTD from AKL. Since we had our car, we drove rather than take the bus. Nice drive. I noticed the Hess stations selling gas for $2.58 on 9/22/05. Glad I filled up off property at a BP for $2.48! That reminds me. We got two "free" $25.00 BP gift cards prior to going down to WDW, so our gas was "free". The cards were part of a Winn Dixie promotion. I still have some money left over on one of them. Sorry for the ramble.

After our meal, we strolled around the east side of DTD and checked out some of the jip joints. We then bought several items at World of Disney and decided to go back to AKL. The drive back to AKL was normal and without incident. When we parked at the AKL, I was rather peckish for an orange and some Spanish peanuts. Due to previous planning, I had both commodities in the trunk of my car. I retrieved them and headed for the room. We watched a little TV to see the progress of hurricane Rita and then went to sleep promptly at midnight!

Here is the message I got from my "team" just before midnight on the 22nd;

"The "Team" who is here at the New Orleans Airport this weekend. So we'll be likely leaving too but will probably be able to get another assignment. We just had a rain band come through... Hurricane Rita seems like a bad one & it recently jogged more towards us here in New Orleans. At least the Airport seems like a good place to ride it out. We are in Kenner, actually, & away from the levees & probably far enough from Lake Ponchitrain... Fun & games...."

Interesting report, Woody.

Did you not do any parks?

I'll also be sure to not clog up the left lane while on the interstate. But, aren't scanners illegal for non-law enforcement personnel?

We had a good nights rest at the AKL. However, we did notice a lot of very loud children and adults in the hallways at times. There seems to be a small segment of our society that simply has no manners and I have the luck of often being in their presence. For example, at 3 AM we were treated to a family out in the hallway that were trying to find their room by putting their card key in each lock and then attempting to open the door! I suspected they were burglars and called security. It turned out they were just lost. They figured the easiest way to find their room was to just try each one until the key worked!

We don't do early. For all of you people that like to get up at the crack of dawn, more power to you! I prefer to sleep until I'm ready to get up. So, we always miss the morning rush. We got up and walked out to the bus stop about 9:45 AM. The first bus we saw was going to Disney/ MGM so we went there. We got off the bus and went straight through the no bags area (we don't carry useless baggage) and direct to the turnstiles. Found an opening and we got in the park in record time!

There were no wait times for any attractions or restaurants. Everything was a walk-on. We did, VoTLM, GMR, MV3D and then it was time for lunch. My wife liked The Earl of Sandwich so much from our dinner last night, that she wanted to eat there again for lunch! We left the park and caught the Hotel Plaza Blvd. bus to the Wyndham Palace. We got off there and walked across the street to DTD and had our lunch at The Earl of Sandwich. We split The Earl's Club. We then reversed the process and caught another Hotel Plaza Blvd. bus back to Disney/ MGM. It was a lot faster than using WDW transportation. Those Hotel Plaza Blvd. buses run like clockwork!

Back at Disney/ MGM, we did BatB and the theater was almost empty! We seated ourselves way down (about 7th row center). I noticed that 4 for a Dollar now has a new guy singing bass! The show was great. We then did RnR, ToT, BLT and GMR again. We visited several of the gift shops and the pin stations and my wife bought some stuff and had it sent back to the room. It sure was nice to see good ole Stitch! Everyone really loves that guy. He's certainly my favorite Elvis impersonator.

Now, it was time for dinner. We walked over to the 50's Prime Time Cafe and were seated immediately (without a reservation) and we had planned to split the caramelized salmon. When our server brought the dish out, the salmon was stone cold as were the potatoes! At first I thought this was part of the act and I played along until I realized our server was totally incompetent. We left (without paying), filed a formal complaint with guest relations and we were then treated to a compensatory meal at The Brown Derby (we split the Cobb salad). It was very good. I checked with a few CM's I know and was told that the 50's Prime Time Cafe has had some recent staffing problems. I just wish they'd told me before my wife and I were victimized!

We then did Fantasmic before we went back to our room. Fantasmic was very well done! I'm not a fan of the WDW fireworks shows but Fantasmic is more than just fireworks!

We got back to the room and watched the news about the immanent strike of Rita along the Gulf coast. I got a message from one of my team members who is working a law enforcement officer (LEO) detail in New Orleans. This message is via a special satellite uplink to ensure reliable communication. I've had to edit a few names, classified material and personal items out, but the main body of the message is the same. FS stands for U.S. Forrest Service. The sender refers to Homestead, because we both worked LEO details during the aftermath of hurricane Andrew;

"We went out & about in the city today, unexpectedly, so unfortunately without any cameras (I was riding with someone else). I saw damage: some apt.complexes that were ripped apart like the ones in Homestead, areas with tall "bathtub" rings on houses and cars that had obviously flooded to their windshields, a police training center with a full parking lot of police cars & civilian cars that had obviously been flooded up to their windshields, same for a new car dealership with a lot full of flooded mucky cars, some of the streets in the French Quarter (which didn't look too bad)- including the last hotel we stayed in-- Le Richlieu, looked OK from the outside, but had to drive by a precariously-leaning lightpole, went by the "Six Flags" & they had breached a levee to let water drain out & it looked like a waterfall. Heard more than one story from New Orleans Police Dept officers who lost everything. I have been manning a road into the new camp I'm at & talking to alot of people, including National Guard personnel from CA. This camp has fire-fighting & search & rescue teams from all over the country, but mainly NY City & Chicago. I lucked out on sleeping quarters (important since I am still on the night shift-- 4 PM until 8 AM-- when I have to try to sleep from 8 AM until 4 PM). I ended up rooming with a friend of mine, (Deleted Name), now a FS LEO from Utah, that I met a long time ago, when I was at my FS job in CA & she worked in Yosemite. We have sort of kept in touch since then. The camp is in a small (closed right now) Catholic College & we have a small room with A/C on the second floor in which we have set up our cots. Our room has a saint's name over it-- Saint Pius something. Each room even has a toilet & shower that you share with an adjoining room! A big step up from the small airport room under the concourse with a pit toilet or a walk through the men's sleeping room to the women's rest room!

On this assignment, we will also take turns in the city babysitting N.O. Fire Stations when the firefighters get called out. I haven't done it yet, but our drive around tonight was to start getting familiar with the area. They have started getting alot of fires, mainly as people return & realize that it will take alot more money to replace their homes. Apparently the fire insurance pays off better than the flood insurance...

I'm sure glad I don't live here, it's going to be a long, tough road for the residents...."

I am going to continue this report tomorrow. The WDW part gets better, but the Rita part gets a lot worse unfortunately.

Not you Scott! You would never clog up a traffic lane and don't worry, I am fully commissioned.

Today we went to the MK via the All-Star Music Resort! We drove over to All-Star Music to hook up with a few friends and then caught the bus to MK. The ride over was fast and there were no lines at the turnstiles. MK was a ghost town and most of the attractions were walk-ons. We went straight for the train. I noticed that all the MK trains now have metal guard on the bottom left of the passenger seating area to keep guests from sticking their feet out of the train! Oh well, it's just another sign of the times in which we live. We detrained at Splash Mountain. No wait to board Splash.

We then walked over to the Jungle Cruise and boarded. My wife likes boats so we had to ride this thing since the Liberty Square Riverboat was down. Again, no wait and it was just as dumb as is was the last time I rode it over 10 years ago! We then walked over to PoC. Here, there was small wait in the queue because PoC had just come back online from a 101. A man in front of us was clearly intoxicated. He stank and staggered his way through the queue. As we approached the boat boarding area, I discretely notified the CM to have security standing by at the end of the ride. As the drunk got on the boat, he almost fell down. He was seated directly in front of us. He was accompanied by several friends. I think they were French.

As the boat left the dock, the drunk pulled out a flask and started to drink. He passed the flask to one of his friends who also took a few drinks as well. The stink from this drunk was horrendous! When the boat stopped at the departure area, I looked for security but didn't see anyone. The drunk was able to get off the boat without incident, but he fell down on the speed ramp! His friends pulled him to his feet. I was still right behind the whole group as we entered the gift shop. I still saw no sign of security personnel. The drunk and his friends headed right and I headed to the left. Just as I left the gift shop, I saw security and I was able to point the drunk out to them. It was immediately apparent to security that this guy was very intoxicated (it was only 10 AM!) and they snatched him up and his friends for parts unknown.

We then did BTMR, HM, IASW and checked out a few gift shops and bought some more WDW stuff. Then is was time for lunch. We ate at the Liberty Tree Tavern (no reservation) and split the Maryland Crab Cake and the Clam Chowder. It was very good. We then did SWSA, MAWP and PhilharMagic.

We then went over to Tomorrowland and did SM, CoP, TTA and SGE. That loveable Stitch never gets old! As usual SGE had a very long queue. The guests really enjoy SGE. We made sure to depart before the 3 PM parade started although the parade groupies were busy staking out their territories! We took the bus back to All-Star Music and then drove back to AKL to change clothes. After a brief rest we headed over to Epcot for dinner.

We decided to eat at Le Cellier (no reservations) and we split the Grilled Beef Kabob and the Cheddar Cheese Soup. It was all excellent. We then just walked around the World Showcase and looked in the shops and road a few attractions. We got out of there before the fireworks started, but again the fireworks groupies were staking out their spots. We took the bus back to AKL.

I got an update on the New Orleans area from one of my team members. I can't post it this time nor can I tell you all the details. However, in a nutshell, a large number of suspicious fires have swept the city and it appears that a coordinated arson squad is involved. Investigation continues.

Today we decided to visit AK and we decided to drive! We parked in Unicorn 28 and walked to front entrance. We saw West Palm doing his thing by one of the planters. The lines at the turnstiles were short and we got right in the park. We headed straight back to KS but they were down so we got fastpasses. The WET and RPW were also down so we went on PFET and that was a big mistake! Everyone else did the same thing. I have never seen PFET so crowded! I could barely walk down the trail. It was not a very pleasant experience. We got out of there ASAP.

As we exited PFET we noticed that both KS and the WET were still down, so we walked over to and did ITTBAB. No line and no wait. In the past we have always sat in various locations in the theater. This time I wanted to sit right in the area close to the screen where we would get a direct hit from the "insect spray". That was fun (and very cold)! After that bug bomb hit us it took us awhile to see anything again! However, as usual, it was a really tremendous show. We left and headed back to KS because our fastpass time was ready.

KS was still down but WET and RPW were up and running so we took the train. We haven't made this trip in several years because we find it rather boring but it is nice to see a little behind the scenes action. When they first opened this part of the park it was my expectation that it would be enlarged and expanded over the years. However, the only thing that has been expanded is the train track. When the WET first opened, it was not a complete loop as it is today. The original WET ran forward and backward on the same section of track. We finished up at RPW and headed back to Harambe for KS.

KS was running again so we went through the fastpass line. The standby people were angry! Some people were yelling expletives at us! I've never had that happen before. It felt kind of good. We went to the front of the line and got on a vehicle quickly. On our last trip on KS we had noticed a couple of detours because of the ongoing repairs of the AK drainage system. This trip, all repairs were completed and the route was back to normal. During our trip on the safari there was a little girl who repeatedly asked the CM about the "wires in the road" and why were they there. The girl was making reference to the "cattle grates" that you see in the road as you travel through the gates from one enclosure to another. The CM just looked at the little girl and said, "What wires"?

I felt it was a little unfair not to offer an explanation to the little girl. As we got off the attraction I asked her Dad if it would be OK with him if I explained to her what cattle grates (AKA cattle guards) are and how they work. He was anxious for me to provide her with an explanation. So, I proceeded to explain how and why hoofed animals had a fear of and refused to cross cattle guards. After I finished the explanation, I asked her if she had any questions. She said, "No, I understand now. That's where the animals wipe poopy off their hooves." We quickly left the area before I broke out laughing! Kids say the darnest things! Well, with poopy fresh in our minds, my wife and I decided to have lunch.

We ate at the Flame Tree BBQ. We split the Smoked Barbecue Chicken Salad and sat down by the water and looked at EE. We then did Dinosaur, KRR and MJT. We then decided to go over to the Island Mercantile shop and pick up the various passholder pins that we didn't have already. We then headed back to the AKL to freshen up before dinner.

We drove over to DTD and decided to eat at Wolfgang Puck Express. My wife got the Lasagna and I got the Pepperoni Pizza. That pizza was good! I ate the whole thing. We sat outside and the seating area was almost full. We were at a table with 4 chairs and while we were eating, a man and his wife asked if they could sit down at our table. We said yes and then engaged in conversation with them. They were retired and living in Sarasota, FL. The man was a retired executive from American Honda Motor Company! I told him I had just bought a new 2005 Honda Accord and that got the ball rolling. As we began to talk, it seemed as if I had known this guy all my life and he seemed to feel that same about me. We ended up going back to their place at the Saratoga Springs Resort. They were super nice people and we ended up making some new friends. We have plans to visit with them again in November, 2005.

Well, those are the highlights of the trip report. We actually did a lot more than I discussed and as I have written this report a few more items have popped into my head that I forgot to include. So I'll jot them down as they come to me and post them later. I still need to include my DVC report but I may do that in the DVC section.
