Wonderland staff told of closure
February 16, 2004
IT'S the end of the ride for Australia's Wonderland, the country's largest theme park, workers were told today.
Staff were called to a meeting with CEO Stephen Gailbraith about 5.30pm (AEDT) today and told the 18-year-old park in Sydney's west would be shutting its gates, an employee said.
The worker, who asked not to be named, said staff had not been told when the theme park would shut.
But he said they were reassured they would be assisted in finding new jobs.
"They haven't given us a set date. They just told us the park's closing and they'll try and find us all jobs," he said.
He said workers were told an official announcement would be made tomorrow.
However, it is believed Wonderland could close as early as April, with some staff, including those from the complex's wildlife park and ride maintenance units, staying on longer.
The reason for the closure was not known.
In May 2002, Wonderland's management fended off rumours that skyrocketing insurance premiums caused by increased public liability claims would force it to close.
No-one from Australia's Wonderland or the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union would comment today.
