I have been waiting for a long time now for Disney to make another great musical (one where the characters actually sing) with a princess. There hasn't been one since Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin. I miss the old Disney movies. Seems they never have singing anymore. Music, yes, but not the characters singing. I just saw the preview for Treasure Planet on teh Tarzan and Jane video, and while this looks like it may be a good movie, it seems so..........boyish to me. Same with Hercules, Atlantis, Tarzan, even Monsters and Toy Story. Not that girls don't enjoy these, they do. And I don't mean to sound sexist, but there is a little girl in me that NEEDS fairy tales and princesses and castles and prince charmings and you know. Except for Mulan, we haven't even had a girl lead. Lilo is close, but she isn't a princess, and her story is very far from a fairy tale. Does anyone else feel the same? Or am I stuck in a time warp, and Disney is just getting with the times and making more realistic up to date stuff?

That topic came up at almost EVERY production meeting while i was at Disney...and it always got shot down.

However...they still use that forumla for the Direct to video releases....they just feel it doesnt really work for the big screen movies anymore..and looking at how much money Lilo and stich brought in...i think it prooved that its a good story that reels em in..not a song.

Well, we'll see how Sweating Bu....I mean Home On the Range does. If the movie is successful, I bet musicals will be back on the rise. If it bombs, I'm sure Disney will stay away from the musical for a while. Of course, now that Disney with our help has succeeded in saving Traditional Animation in General, let's see what we can do about the animated musical, eh?

Wait a minute! Beauty and the Beast (the only animated movie ever to be nominated for an Oscar for best picture) which spurred the Broadway show didn't "reel em in"????? Either time?? And what about The Little Mermaid??????

And what is Home on the Range???????

It definitely seems as though Disney is trying to expand their roster of characters to include different cultures. So many of the older movies were based on fairy tales of a European heritage, perhaps this is not entirely PC anymore.

Also, even though the movies that are in theaters these days seem to be more "boyish", I think the complete archive of full length Disney animated features still leans toward the "girlie" side. :)

That's a good point, Herbie. Perhaps you are right...............

All I know is that I saw Aida on broadway a couple of days of goes and this show is BEGGING to be made into a movie. The
songs that explore the inner struggle might have to be redone into discussions (Step Too Far would be cut, it just wouldnt translate to kids). There is Finest Suit, which would be perfect on the big screen. Fortune Favors the Brave I could see as an opening number. Yeah, it has a sad ending, but the could do something to soften it. If you think about Pocahontis has a sad ending too. They just dont die... okay... the dying thing might be a problem. Okay, I am just in love with the show right now. And not only that it would give us TWO singing princesses (Aida and Amneris), and do that culture crossover thing that disney seems to be enjoying recently.

..in responce to the broadway comment...well..its BROADWAY...its not really only kids who go see those shows....it is idealyl aimed towards a more "adult" croud and the tickets cost a LOT more...so to compaire it to the original cartoon really isnt fair...

Disney has been expressing their new mature artistic side latley..they are innovators..so if that means no song and dance...so be it....i personally (as an "artist") am very pleased with the direction Disney is heading in as far as the cartoons are concerned..it prooves that they are looking towards doing things that are rarely done anymore...not to mention they would have a LOT of self competition if they were to do the songs agian..they have a large legacy of song hits to try and top...which i think is near impossible....

I just recently saw BATB: Broadway touring. It was much more adult than the movie. Lots of S e x u a l innuendo.

Again, I offer this site to those wondering about disney movie productions. As for another Princess/musical I would just kill to see another princess introduced into the collection. I am such a fan of Sleeping Beauty and I wish that they would add more of these clasic stories to their line up. As you can see from the site, there are still plenty to go around.
