Will the demise of the Eastern Gateway at Disneyland be a death blow for businesses on Harbor? - OCR

If Disney really can divert visitors’ focus away from the street, it might find more Harbor Boulevard business owners willing to sell in the years to come, allowing Disney to amass more land… perhaps, eventually enough for Disney to expand eastward again, with more Disney hotels or even another Disney theme park.

But it will be Disney’s businesses on that land, not competitors’.

Want to play hardball with Disney? Be careful what you wish for because no one plays harder with its competition than Disney.<<

Wow, the possibilities now are almost endless, the should be a fun discussion.

Why was the Pinocchio lot such a last resort for a parking structure especially since it apparently can support almost the same amount of parking spaces? Was it primarily for traffic coming into the resort from the 5 North and for a DCA expansion?

Although it'd be unfortunate for those businesses, if the hotels on Harbor were to shut down, it could really improve the overall atmosphere of the resort.

I don't see why people would stop using area hotels, restaurants etc. because of this.

Also, I believe I came up with this idea a while back so I think Disney monitors this forum.
I think the idea is that a larger percentage of people will park/stay in hotels on the west side, meaning they are less likely to venture out to Harbor.

Also, if Disney wigs are stealing your ideas, we should see the end of HMH. So I hope you’re right.

I think as long as that Harbor Blvd entrance stays open it will be business as usual. Where would the west side entrance for non Disney hotels be?

Maybe, but I assume that a) some percentage of their business comes from people parked at Toy Story who will now get to park at Pinocchio and b) occupancy for Harbor hotels will go down as more people stay in the new hotel.

West side would still go through the DTD Security Area. They aren't closing that off to non-Disney guests.

Oh I didn't think they would close off DTD to non Disney guests. I just didn't know where guests staying on the west side/ non Harbor hotels enter the resort from. They walk down Katella but how do they initially get onto the Disney property?

Don't they walk up DL Dr. into DTD or take a shuttle? When I stayed over there I got on a shuttle offered by the hotel to the Harbor side.

It is indeed interesting. I suspect we're in for another 10 years of neglecting / quietly purchasing land on the east side.

If the businesses on the East side are worried, they should increase the quality of the food they serve. If I remember correctly, they're all really lousy quick service restaurants that make you regret leaving Disneyland to eat at- and are only profitable because of the large number of tourists who don't know better.

. The development could have been held up in court

Although Disney was working with some of the owners to alleviate their concerns over the past year and helped possibly create a punch through or access in some of the motels to the security checkpoint, there were just too many other obstacles to overcome.

Some of the Harbor businesses wanted Disney to have a new bridge design that allowed visitors access on and to Harbor Boulevard. They had questions on who would pay for the punch-through or access points in the motels.

A representative for the coalition had also asked Disney for a new environmental impact report to analyze the current and future economic and traffic impact and safety concerns of the Eastern Gateway Project.

Since Disney is starving for parking now and itching to build a parking structure in 2019 for Galaxy’s Edge, a lawsuit from a business owner could have held up the project in court.<<

Not only that aren't there several new hotel properties slated to be built on that side of the Anaheim Resort? Wouldn't that mean traffic will be increasing not decreasing?

Will Disney build a new Transportation Hub on the West side for ART and other shuttles?

If so, that would be a big game changer, and could allow Disney to close down the Eastern Entrance all together

Maybe convert the south road behind Disney to a Shuttle road to the Simba lot and its new security check, that would allow the Toy Story Buses to also drop off at the West end.

All possibilities and the city has no real control over it.

This is why I think Anaheim and the Harbor Businesses were so shortsighted on the Eastern Gateway. Disney can effectively move forward without them in the loop and close off access from Harbor if they wanted. For now the PR machine is running right now on both sides on how its positive. But I'm betting most of the opponents of the Eastern Gateway are now even more worried about lost revenue long term.

In reality I'm beginning to think this is a better plan for DLR as a whole as it moves DTD more inline with what they are doing with Disney Springs.

Just imagine how much space they would gain for expansions if they close off the entire Harbor side.
