I blame the Phoenicians…
As well you should! If it wasn't for the damn alphabet no one would know if others were being snotty or not. Education... the curse of a nation or nations depending on how global you are. Surely we can understand if it wasn't for education we could all be serfs happily training in the skill of farming and the like all the while singing serf songs equivalent to Zip A Dee Doo Dah.

There are millions of well educated people who don’t use an alphabet.

Perhaps not the one we are familiar with, but they have some form of it or they could not form words or communicate to become educated in the sense we know it. Besides my post was just pure sarcasm and not meant to be taken seriously. Just a comment on todays goal of being the dumber the better.

There are written languages that don’t use an alphabet. Over one billion people communicate in Chinese every day and they have for hundreds of years.

OK, but whatever they use is their alphabet just because we don't recognize it or call it that doesn't change anything. Anything that is written or spoken has either letters or symbols that act as that in their language. A lot of Asia is a good example. They use symbols instead of letters, however, a rose by any other name is still a rose. バラはどんな名前で呼ばれてもバラです The alphabet is our representation of symbols we just put them together in an arrangement that lets us know what the message is.

An alphabet is not any written language system, it is a specific type of written language system. Written Chinese uses logograms, not an alphabet.

I don't know why the hell it is so important to you, but OK, it's not the alphabet and there are many highly educated people that do not use our alphabet. Two things, you win and I still wrote that post as a sarcastic message for those of us the use our alphabet so it really doesn't matter. I'd even bet the Phoenician alphabet was different then the one we use. Whether it is or not is also irrelevant.
