Why don't they make a Brer Rabbit movie?

This came to me earlier today. Splash Mountain is popular, lots of people ride it, but I think few of them know who any of the characters in it are. If Disney is so paranoid about the people's reaction to Song of the South, why don't they make some straight to video movie about Brer Rabbit, minus all the Political incorrectness? It wouldn't exactly be Song of the South, and in the long run i'd prefer that they just release it, but it obviously isn't going to happen and I think this would be a decent alternative.

The potential for it to come out like the Haunted Mansion movie would scare me... i dont want them to ruin my favorite ride with a crappy movie!

I just saw a commerical on TV for a Brer Rabbit dvd...made by Universal. I thought this was kinda odd. I guess I thought that Disney owned the rights to the Uncle Remus characters, but apparently not. I'm just surprised that Disney didn't do this first (and would have been better, I'm sure).

Here's my take on this subject from another thread:

Before you react negatively to what I say...really think about what I say about the general public....and then you can bash me.

I read in another post, that someone thought they should do another movie with Brer Rabbit and Co., but to be honest...who really in the general public wants that? I'd say that probably only 1% of Americans would actually want a cartoon dealing with those chracters. They have become very obscure (which is why I like em) and they are only recognizable by people who either follow animation and/or by people who visit Disney, but even those who visit Disney, probably aren't remembering who they were as they walk out the gates at night. I could see slipping them into a TV show like House of Mouse with cameos, but that's about it. These characters are great and I love Brer Bear, his appearances throughout the ride are some of the best and as much as I would love this to be on DVD, you really have to think about how many people in the general public (who don't know about these characters) are actually going to buy this DVD? I honestly believe it would probably be the worst selling Disney DVD of all time. At least with the cheap-quels, you are dealing with established characters that people recognize.

I disagree.

I would (and probably will) support a Brer Rabbit et al cartoon. I enjoyed the stories when watching SotS as a kid. When we ride Splash at WDW, my 6 yo has always asked me "who's that" as we go through. I always hoped there would be a way to show all my kids the Brer Rabbit cartoons.

I didn't know this was not a Disney movie, so that has me disappointed, but I will probably get it anyway.

Too bad Disney didn't see an audience for Brer Rabbit and friends.

I checked a copy of the Universal Brer Rabbit cartoon the other day in a store and the character designs aren't that bad from what I saw on the case. I would place some of them in a "Very Good" category. Universal doesn't release much animation and sometimes that can be bad for a company, but they are also the company that released the first (2nd and 3rd) Balto film(s). I see the Brer Rabbit movie tho as more of a rental first and then possibly a purchase later on...depending on quality. Like I said tho, character designs didn't look that bad so it could be good...they probably spent way too much money on the voice talent, but what're ya do...their choice.

Balto sits very high on my list of favorite animated features. It had a good story (it was a true one), but it was the animation that really did it for me. It was smooth and worked so well. The backgrounds were fantastic...some of the side characters weren't so great, but it was released by Universal so I give them props for that.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for Herobear and the Kid...Universal supposedly agreed to make a feature out of this independent comic book that was created by an ex-Disney story person/animator. The comic was amazing (all black and white - rough animation style art with a red cape for the bear - fantastic comic).
