Who is the "average" guest?

I've seen the term "the average guest" a number of times and have to wonder is it even a valid term with regards to Walt Disney World. I've met people who experienced every attraction at the MK but claimed the day stunk because they couldn't get a dinner reservation at BOG. I've also met guests who did almost nothing but had time with grandchildren and it was the best day ever. There are people who love some attractions that others think should be razed. There are people for which money appears to be no object yet others who carry a backpack with enough supplies it seem to scale Mount Everest in order to save money. So I ask - who is this "average" guest.

Anyone who bought a ticket and went there would be the average guest. Some are able to channel their inner child and enjoy just about everything. Some are also pretty sure that they will be back so do not feel the need to have to see everything at once. Some go with the kids because they think they should. I did that and found myself enjoying the place more then the kids did. So, I guess there is no such thing as an average personality. However, if you were to funnel it to one thing it would possibly someone that wants a break from reality, enjoys their family and finds a way to have fun.

Somewhere in the middle of everything you've said ;)

I'm sure that Disney have some pretty good metrics to say who their guests are / where there from / how much they spend etc, but I think that it'll be hard to draw any real conclusion as it's such a diverse crowd. I know people who have been to Disney Parks who I would imagine would never go and visa-versa.

I think it's common to say that "it's for kids", so if you've got a young family then they'll be your average guest but I think most of us here know this is the not case and that there are plenty of adult only trips.

I also think to some degree, you can say that you need to have a reasonable amount of disposable income in order to go to WDW, but plenty of people will save for years to afford a trip.

Where you come from makes a difference too. From the UK, it costs quite a bit to go because of the flights etc, but equally park tickets are a bit cheaper. The difference in Disney Advertising is probably different from region to region too (Disney have been pushing their "Go to Disney with your teenage kids" line recently here, but I'm sure in other places that will be different).

It's probably far easier to say "what will the average guest do whilst in WDW" rather than "who are they".

An average guest might be someone who always dreamt of going to Disney, saved up for their trip, brought their children there when they were young, went to Disney totally unprepared, was confused, got lost, got frustrated, did a majority of the attractions but still missed out on most of what Disney had to offer. And will never come back again because they think they went once, saw it all, why go back?
Those of us on this site are not in that category.... we are SUPERIOR Disney guests.... WE WILL NEVER BE AVERAGE.

Yes
Think of a middle class family, two or three kids, that's probably been saving for years to go to WDW. They most likely stay on property, maybe even in a deluxe resort if they've saved enough. When they go to the parks they have a good time, but very likely have no idea what they're doing or about the history of the parks. The typical average guest only visits the Magic Kingdom since many people think that's all there is to WDW.

To me the "average" Disney guest is someone that goes maybe once or twice and thinks some parts are fun and some parts are not and thinks Value Resorts are the best hotels in the world and paying for anything more than that is just dumb. They think DVC members are basically certifiable for "wanting to go that much". They think everything is really overpriced and not worth it. The think the parks are ALWAYS over crowded at all times of the year. They think people who spend tons of time keeping up with Disney and dying for their next trip and who get excited just thinking about it are weird. That about sums it up. LOL!

i would say in my limited mind that an average guest is someone who visits WDW for "once in a life time" trips. yes i said trips because they may do it twice. But for the most part these people may do it once and then do a different vacation every year. they may come back after years of other trips or they may not come back at all.

I would guess that the average guest:

  • Visits once or twice in their lifetime
  • Visits for around five days
  • Does not read any discussion board like this one
  • Has basic knowledge of how to use things such as Fastpass
