Which Time is Better to Go in 2016?

Well, my original vacation dates have to be revised due to my daughter's dance recital being a week later than I anticipated. I'm now looking at heading to California either April 15-24 or May 20-29. The April dates, I'm concerned about spring breakers. Do many places still have spring break at that time? As for May, that is the week before Memorial weekend/we would be leaving on Memorial weekend. I have the same concerns about crowds and also thinking flights home might be a lot more expensive. I'm also planning a couple of beach days, so is April much colder than May? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm on the east coast but there are a ton of colleges and universities around here and they all break in March and April. If I had to personally choose between the two dates you mentioned, I would not hesitate to go in May.

The week in April will be better. Spring break will be over by then for mostly everyone whereas schools (colleges mostly) will start kicking off summer by 5/20 and crowds will be larger.

Touringplans.com (only $8 for a year, so worth it) shows a crowd of mainly 5 and 6 (out of 10) for the April period and a solid 7 for the May period. Might not seem like a huge difference, but you'll definitely feel it by late May.

We were there for the first time on Tues-Wed, May 27-28, 2014. We went to DCA on the 27th and DL on the 28th. The 28th was a Grad Nite which takes place in DCA but the grads have access to DL as well so it was rather crowded there but not awful. The non-Grad Nite day was quite empty.

Southwest airlines just opened their next tier of tickets. We will be booking ours after work tonight for sometime in early march.
