When to go to Universal-any discount periods?

DD is turning 12 this spring and for her birthday present, DH and I will take her on a long weekend away-just the three of us at a location of her choice. She wants to visit Universal. We don't have a specific date and I'm wondering if there is a way to track lodging discounts and other deals by date? Any options for a flexible date search in order to get the best deals?
We will almost certainly stay in one of the on site hotels.
Also, this will be our first visit and I'm wondering if there is a good place to visit on the web for an overview of Universal?

As a annual visitor since the hotels opened Id have to say this is the first year I havent got a discount of any description including my Lowes card and Hard Rock All Access.
