Wheel Chair Question

Hello Everybody,

I find myself again needing some info from all the pros. My family is going to Disney World over Christmas and my Mom has developed a medical condition which may require the use of a wheel chair depending on what kind of day she is having .I phoned Disney and have gotten prices and availability of wheel chairs etc. but my Mom is worried that she will need a Dr.'s note either to rent them or to access any of the handi-cap entrances at the attractions as she can only walk short distances and may be unable to stand in line without something to sit on.

This will be a first for us in the parks and we want to make things as easy as possible because it will also be our first trip taking our son and she wants to make sure she sees his reaction to everything.

Any info/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You can rent or take one with you without need of a Doctor's note. Wheelchair access to most rides is the same as the regular access, but where it isn't, there are clearly identified entrances for wheelchairs. If your mom can transfer from the wheelchair to the ride, she'll be fully able to experience everything she's medically fit to ride. You can get a brochure explaining ride limitations as well as which rides have handicap entrances from Guest Relations at the parks.

If her medical condition is such that waiting in line even in the wheelchair could be an issue, you can request a Guest Assistance Card, which will assist the CMs at each ride in assisting her in a way appropriate to her needs. There are different cards available for different requirements. You do not need a Doctor's note, simply explain in general terms what her requirements/limitations are and Guest relations will provide the appropriate card.

I'm sure she'll have a great time!

We were in Disney in September with my 80+ year old parents, both of whom cannot walk far. As you enter each park the wheelchair rentals are right there. If you know how many days you will be entering the parks you get a discount for multiple days if you pay at the same time. The wheelchair rentals are for any park so it does not matter if you change your mind about which park you are going to. If you park hop your receipt is good at the next park for no extra charge. Everyone was very kind to my parents and we had a great trip. Most of the buses also lower so people who have trouble stepping up can almost walk right on the bus. Hope you have as good a time as we did! Janine

We have a 19 year old son who is developmentally disabled (both mental and physical struggles). Disney is always wonderful to us, but I would recommend getting a note from the doctor if it is not a big deal, as it may avoid concerns from a novice CM at Guest Relations. Due to my son's concerns we have received guest Assistance Card which has allowed us to go to the Fastpass line at any time. this has greatly increased my son's enjoyment of the parks, and greatly improved my family's relaxation and appreciation of what Walt Disney World can offer our special boy.
We bring his stroller/wheelchair from home, so I can't offer any advice on the wheelchair rentals- sorry.

The first year we took my mom, she handled AK fine, but it really wiped her out. She had an accident several years ago where she almost lost one of her legs. It's not noticeable and she doesn't have any "handicap" condition, but with that much walking, she really hurt. The second day and for the rest of the trip, she rented a scooter. There were no questions asked and she was never mistreated by anyone.

Last year, my dad needed a wheelchair for the first time. We took one from home instead of renting. The cost of renting is fairly high. The convenience of bypassing lines/crowds was SO worth it. CMs are really helpful.

For parades, etc., there are designated areas for the whole group and views are great.
