Gosh, that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. When I lived in San Diego, people would talk about how great they are. I haven't heard the Whataburger name since we moved to Tennessee.
In the Los Angeles area, the popular burger was an "In and Out Burger". What made them so good, was that they had a central shipping warehouse based in L.A. Everything was shipped fresh each morning to each store. The meat was fresh, not frozen, the buns were baked the night before, the produce was sent fresh. They couldn't expand much because the stores had to stay within a certain driving distance of the shipping warehouse.
Also, alot of younger people liked putting the bumper stickers on their cars..."In and Out". Can't imagine why.
