What is taking so long with the carousel?

The carousel has been under scrims for months. What exactly is taking them so long? I know it’s an authentic carousel from 1917 and they want to take really good care of it, but I can’t imagine what could possibly be taking them so long. Anyone have any ideas?

For ME, (and my family thinks I'm nuts), the Carousel is one of my favorite attractions at MK...I grew up in Maplewood, NJ, home of the former Olympic Park (where the carousel came from)...while I was only 1 when the park closed, my parents took me there and took me on the seated portion of the ride, so it holds a special place in my heart and I always ride it at least once while we're there.

That scrim has been up for at least a year now...?

Not sure if they have been consistently working on it like they have other things.

This probably got placed on the 'we will work on it later after lands and other IP attractions get finished' list as with other classic attractions that need major TLC.

The carousel itself is still operating and not affected by the work. It's the roof that has now taken over 8 months (and counting) to complete.

My parents said I rode it when I was around 1 or 2. We live in Maryland

No idea what is actually going on, but after more than 20 years in the construction business I can give you a number of probable reasons. Odds are one or more of them is the actual reason.

1. They found bigger problems once they began work. Having been involved with a near countless number of remodel and/or refurb projects I am here to tell you unforeseen problems are all but inevitable. Delays from this can range from days to years on something as simple as a room addition. In the case of the carousel, you can't exactly run down to Granger or Home Depot and just get parts. Delays resulting from custom fabrication work are probably the 2nd longest delay in the business.

2. Corporate bureaucracy. Nothing delays a project like waiting for 18 different departments, 17 of which have zero interest in the project, to make a decision. A simple wrinkle in a project like this can sometimes take months to get a decision on when it has to through the corporate chain.

3. Labor shortage. Construction labor is really hard to come by in Florida right now. Nearly every project I have worked on in the last couple of years has gotten pushed back weeks to months bucause builders simply can not find framers, plumbers, concrete, etc. With all the construction going on in and around WDW right now, the carousel is most likely at the bottom of the priority list as it is up and running. The fact that it has been an eyesore for more than a year is unfortunately not much of a factor anymore.
